Chapter 45
LeeAnn's POV
I knew this was a long shot, but I was hoping we could have some fun while everyone else was off doing their own thing. I had been kind of stressed out, and I knew he was too. We both really needed this. I walked into the office and saw a look of confusion on his face. I asked him what was wrong. He told me about the call, and then I suggested that we should not worry about this stress for just one night. I also said, "Let's practice making a baby." I didn't think we would go all night, but we did. We did it everywhere in his office: on the couch, the desk, his chair—it was a lot of fun. Afterward, we went up to shower but ended up having one more round before taking another shower. I was sore, so I decided to take a break and work on the invitations. The invites had been done yesterday. I just needed a break, and it would give him a chance to get some rest. The only thing left for me to do was to mail them out to the packs. I asked my runner to take them to the post office and make sure they were mailed. I gave her some cash, and then she said,
"My queen, before I leave, can we talk?" I was a little confused as Nicole never wanted to talk. She was a shy girl who stayed to herself and never caused any trouble. I wondered what was wrong, so I asked her, "Alright, sure we can talk. What's wrong, honey?" She had a sad look on her face when she looked up at me. Then she ended up telling me everything.
"Well, last year at the ball, I wasn't very lucky. I got rejected by my mate because he thought I didn’t have a wolf. I hadn't shifted yet, but I could feel her inside of me. I still haven’t shifted, and I think there is something wrong with me. He rejected me and then said, 'I don't need a weak wolfless omega like you as my mate.' I don't know what is taking so long for her to form and shift. I'm only twenty-one; I should have shifted when I turned eighteen. But I'm twenty-one now. I hear her in my head; she keeps telling me it's not time yet, but soon. What am I doing so wrong, my queen, to not shift?" I was stunned that she got rejected last year; I didn't even know. I didn't even know she went. I knew a lot of us were saddened that Laura still hadn't woken up. I knew there was only a handful that went. I knew I needed to calm her down.
"Nicole, honey, you're a late bloomer. When your wolf tells you 'not yet,' that means she will tell you when you're going to shift. You're not an omega, so I don't know why he would say that to you. You're a beautiful person, sweetheart. So it's his loss and someone else's gain. You will have a wonderful mate who will treat you like the wonderful person that you are. He wasn't it; he thinks he's going to get someone better, but it doesn't work that way. You don't reject your goddess-given gifts."
"Do I have to go to this one? I'd rather sit this one out. I don't want to get rejected again. I don't think my wolf would be able to survive this time." Sighing, I really wanted her to go and have fun even if she doesn't find her mate, but I can't force someone to go like that. So I simply told her this:
"Honey, you don't have to go anywhere that you don't want to go. But do me a huge favor and just think about it, okay? Even if you just go to have fun, you don't have to look for a mate if you don't want to, but just think about it, okay?" I heard her sigh, and then she said, "I can't promise you anything, but I will think about it. Thank you for listening to me, LeeAnn. Alright, well, I'm taking these to the post office to mail them off. I'll be back soon."
Nicole's POV
I really didn’t want to go to this ball. I was done with them. Last year, only a handful went to the ball to another pack, the Gold Moon Pack. There were like six packs there looking for their mates. Mine found me and then rejected me. He told me I was a wolfless human and too weak to be with him, so he rejected me. I felt pain in my stomach and chest. I knew I had to accept the rejection so the pain would stop. It didn't even hurt him because he didn't care. He left me on the ground to go back into the ball. When I finally got up, I brushed myself off and took off back home. No one even knew I had left because they were having too much fun. I was a nobody. No one cared if I left the kingdom. No one would even know because hardly anyone even knew who I was. I stay quiet. I run errands for the queen. When I went in there to grab the mail to mail out, I talked to LeeAnn. I told her what had happened. I could tell she didn't even know I had gone. She told me to think about it. If I do go, I'm going to need a scent cover. I don't want anyone finding me to reject me again.
"What do you mean, Nicole, our mate is out there looking for us?"
"I doubt it, Sammy. Why would he be looking for us, only to reject us? I'm going to need to find someone for a powerful scent cover. I don't want us getting hurt again. I'm going to need to talk to my grandmother about this. She might know who I can talk to. I went to the post office to mail all the invites out. Then I went to talk to my grandmother. No one knew she was a white witch. I sat down on her couch. She knew something was wrong, so she asked me,
"Honey, what's wrong? Who do I need to beat up?" I laughed hard. She was always like that, always a jokester making someone laugh when they need to. When I recovered from laughing, I asked her,
"Grandmother, do you know a powerful scent cover I could use to conceal my scent? I don't want to get hurt like I did last year. Nobody even knew I was there or if I had left. They were having too much fun," she looked sad at me and then said, "Yeah, I know someone. But you will need a necklace so she can infuse it with magic. Here, I'll write down the address. But be very careful. Don't tell anyone what you're going to do. Concealing your scent so your mate can't find you can cause trouble. You need to always be careful, honey."
"Yes, ma'am. Please let her know I will be there tomorrow afternoon. I want to talk to the queen about training. I think it's about time I start learning how to fight and get strong. Maybe then I will shift," I stuck the address in my pants pocket and then got up and hugged her.
"Of course, dear. Just make sure you're there on time. If you're late, she will think you're not serious."
"Oh, I'm serious. I am really serious about this. Thank you again, Grandma." I kissed her cheek and then left. I needed to get home so I could talk to LeeAnn again, but this time about training. When I got home, she was outside pulling weeds from the garden. When she saw me, she stood up, cleaning off her hands.
"Hey, Nicole, you're home a little late. Is everything alright?"
"Yeah, I just stopped by to talk to my grandmother. I was wondering if there is any way I can start training. I think it's high time for me to start learning how to defend myself and get stronger. I want to become a warrior." Her eyes lit up as if she was happy I wanted to do this. My heart was beating fast. I thought she was going to tell me no, but instead, she clapped her hands together and laughed. Then she said,
Of course, I will talk to Polly tomorrow and get you into the new recruit program. You train every morning at five AM and then again at seven PM. Don't make any plans at those times. You will be moving into the new recruit house, but don't worry, it's only for two months. Then Polly and Rebecca will tell you if you graduate to the second part of the warrior group or stay in the first stage to learn more." I thought about this for a few seconds. I'll train in the morning, then I will shower and head to where the address sends me. I hope I will be back in time to train at seven. I don't want to screw it up on the first day of training.
"I will be there in the morning. Thank you for this chance to show you what I can do. I already know how to fight, but I want to learn more and become a warrior."
"That's wonderful, dear. We will see you in the morning. Just make sure you pack up for the few months you will be in the new recruits' cabin so you won't miss anything."
"I won't forget, I promise." I ran off to my room to pack a few bags. I ended up packing five since I will be staying in the cabin for a few months. I need to find a necklace. I looked around in my jewelry box and almost forgot about the secret part of it when I clicked down the little knob in the middle. Out came a small box. I still remember when my mother gave me this necklace. I kept it hidden because I didn't want anyone taking it away from me. It's a green ruby, yes, a green ruby with a little red inside. My mother gave it to me for my 13th birthday. This will do. I'll start wearing the necklace so it won't look out of place. Then tomorrow afternoon, I will take it with me. There you go, it's all set.
"Why are you doing this? Our mate will be looking for us at the mating ball."
"Yeah, to reject me like the other one did. I'm not getting hurt. I want to fall in love the old-fashioned way, not because of some mate bond that the moon goddess gives us."
