Chapter 46 Nicole's POV I woke up in the morning and had to rush because I was almost late for training. Grabbing an apple from the kitchen, I ate it while running to the training ground. Thank the goddess I remembered to put on the necklace so people would see it on me. I was planning on heading to the address as soon as I got done with training. I moved my things to the new recruit cabin last night. I had the last room – it was a little small, but it's okay since it's just me in there. I even had my own bathroom. I think everyone had that, but there are some that are upstairs. I was standing in line with the new recruits, who all smirked at me, knowing I was almost late. Well, not anymore. I was serious about this. I knew how to fight; I just wanted to learn how to defend myself. I had to learn to fight when I became a runner. I thought it was the only thing I was good at, but now I'm determined to show everyone different, including the ones that are smirking at me. Polly and Rebecca came into view. They started walking down the line, looking at each and every one of us. Then Polly spoke in a powerful voice, saying, “Alright, new recruits, mind telling me why you think smirking at another new recruit for almost being late? We are a team here, meaning all of us are family. If one is late, all of you are. We work together. I don't care if you don't like the person or if you hate them. We work together as a team and family. Nicole is new to the recruits; she just moved into the cabin last night. There are rules posted up. I went there and saw that it was taken down. So whoever took it down, you need to speak up.” Rules? I didn’t see anything that was posted on the wall. Polly must be right. Someone had taken it down. I didn't notice when a teenage boy stepped up and said, “I was the one that took it down. It was just a prank. Besides, she is just a runner. She runs errands for other people. Why is she even being trained to be a warrior?” Polly looked at me, then at the kid that spoke, and then back at me again. She gave her head a nudge, telling me I needed to stand up for myself. This is the first part of training; I needed to stand up for myself. So, I took a step forward, walked over to him, got into his face, and said, “This runner is named Nicole. I want to become a warrior. If you have a problem with this, it's too damn bad. I don't answer to you, so stop being an ass hat and get back in line.” His jaw dropped open. I guess he thought I was going to bow down and be scared to say something to him. Moving away, I got back in line, then waited for the next thing to do. Polly was impressed; she smiled at Nicole, and then her attention went back to her duties. “Alright, we got that done and over with. No more pranks on anyone. We do not do that here. You might do it at school, but not in the pack. Is that clear? Alright, let's get started. Since it's your first day of training, everyone, I want to see seventy laps. If you stop to break, you must keep going, meaning a fast walk. There is no stopping: you stop, you will have to do it all over again. So, let's get started. I'm hoping I can do this; if not, I'll fast walk and practice when I can. But I know I can run. It took a while, but we all ran the seventy laps. Not one of them stopped; no one wanted to do it over again. When Polly came up to us, she said, ‘Alright, good job, everyone. Today is going to be warm-ups to get your arms and legs stronger. You're going to be sore; you're not going to want to get up in the morning to do it over again. But if you want to become a warrior, your ass will be here in the mornings and afternoons. For the next three days, there will be running and warm-ups. After those three days, we will start training, and we will do hard training. So here we go. I want to see seventy leg lifts on each leg. I want to see squats, push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups. I want to see those arms and legs so tired you won't hardly be able to walk back to that cabin. Come on, let's go.” Damn, I'm not sure if I'm going to make it to that address today, but I need to. I need this lady to know that I'm serious about this. I did the leg lifts, squats, and everything that Polly had told us to do. Believe me, my legs and even my butt were burning, even my arms. Oh, goddess, help me survive this day. We still have our afternoon training as well. I need to learn to bring some water out here. I'll make sure to get a water bottle so I can fill it up in the mornings. After three hours of warm-ups and exercise, my bones started hurting; my legs and arms started to feel tight like I needed a warm shower or a hot bath to relax my bones. "Alright, guys, I want to see you out here later this evening. Seven pm sharp, no later than that. Nicole, could you hold back for a few minutes? I would like to speak with you,” I nodded as we watched everyone head back to the cabin. it's my first day and I am already in trouble. What now? Is she going to kick me out on my first day? Once everyone was gone, besides the trainers... “Listen, I'm glad you stood up for yourself. He's a prankster; he's been doing this his whole life. He loves to prank people in the pack, so don't feel he's just after you, okay? But what he said about you being just a runner, I've watched you. You're not just a runner; you can be an awesome warrior, Nicole. Just keep doing what you are doing, and you will be a warrior in no time. And besides, half of those people won't show back up this afternoon. It always happens, and they come back when the training starts back up in six months. It happens every time, but I don't judge. They just want to try, and they are welcome to do so. Will I be seeing you out here later today?” I nodded, then said, “Yes, you sure will. I’m not giving up so easily. This is what I want to do. I’ll see you back out here later." I ran off, went back to the cabin, took a fast shower, got dressed, and then I went back out. I needed to get there before the time was up. I didn't even notice that some recruits were already packing up and leaving. Like Polly said, we do not judge; we give them a chance. It is up to them if they stay or go."
