Chapter 1
Elara The sound of a creaking door caught my attention. Slowly, I lifted my head in that direction. I didn’t have any meetings scheduled, and my secretary was aware that I was busy. Who could it be? I had clearly instructed that I do not want to be disturbed. Before I could give permission for whoever it was to enter, the door creaked open, revealing my uncle Xavier as he stepped into the room. I wasn’t surprised he had let himself in; he often did that when he came around. His jaw tightened the moment our eyes met, a flicker of annoyance evident in his gaze, he clearly didn’t like waiting for a response and usually just walked in unannounced. Ignoring his expression, I flashed him a smile and rose to pull him into a warm hug. “Hello, Uncle Xavier! How are you doing?” I asked as we stepped back from the embrace. “Very well, thank you!” he replied, taking his seat even before I could offer him one. I sat down, settling into my chair and anticipating why he was here. Typically, when he visited, it was either to see me or to discuss something related to the pack. We had lost our Alpha, my father, a few months ago, and ever since then, I had taken over as the female Alpha. My uncle had been instrumental in helping with both the company and the pack during this transition. Some days, I dragged myself home barely able to stand, my body trembling and my hands aching so badly that even the air hurt. I couldn’t have asked for a better uncle, although sometimes I think he only allows people to see what he wants them to see. I’m from the Silvercrest Pack, one of the strongest among all the packs. My father wasn’t just an Alpha; he was a warrior and a great fighter. We’ve won many battles and made peace with packs that had already given up. “Have you looked into the records?” he asked, slowly tilting his head to the right, his hands resting on the desk. I adjusted in my seat, reached for some files, and dropped them on the desk closest to him. “And what are these?” he inquired, his brows furrowed and his expression laced with uncertainty. “They’re the clearance documents. Everything has been settled, and the goods will be arriving within the week. There’s no debt left to pay; the company just needs to work harder to avoid going bankrupt,” I explained, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. It’s been hectic trying to put things in order since my father died. It felt like everything was planned to fall apart the moment he passed. I’ve been doing my best to keep the business running. It’s a company I watched him build, and I can’t just sit back and let it go bankrupt. I watched as he shook his head, perhaps satisfied with my work. “I admire you. You’ve been doing a good job. If you keep this up, in the next couple of months, we’ll be among the top three,” he acknowledged. No doubt we will definitely be doing better than we are today. I just need to put in more effort and do what’s necessary alongside the employees. He sat in silence, and the air around us grew thick, too thick to breathe. My chest tightened; the silence screamed louder than words. He definitely had something to say but was holding back. I didn’t want to ask—I'm not interested in any conversation that doesn’t concern the company or the pack. "I’ll take my leave. I’ll see you at home later today," he said, rising from the chair. His words still hung in the air. I nodded. "Okay! Thank you for stopping by," I responded, watching as he strode toward the door. Just as he grabbed the doorknob, he paused, and I quickly cast my gaze back to my work. I didn’t know what this was about, but I hoped it had nothing to do with what I was thinking. Feigning busyness, I could still sense him standing there, his eyes burning into me. There was no way I was giving in today. Just when I thought he’d give up, I heard footsteps approaching. "Elara!" he called, prompting me to look in his direction. My brows lifted, waiting for him to speak. "I almost forgot, Alpha Zack asked to see you. He wants to have dinner with you." I was right; it was about a man. Though I didn’t expect him to be this specific. Why would I want to have dinner with Alpha Zack? I didn’t like him or his personality. The thought that he has a mate whose whereabouts no one knows only turned me off further. "I'm sorry, Uncle. I’ll have to turn him down. I'm busy; I don’t have time for dinner," I responded, my heart pounding as I declined the invitation. Instead of leaving, he returned to his seat, which only made things more intriguing. This was going to be tough, judging by the way he sat down again. But I wasn’t going to give in. "You should give him a chance. He’s a good Alpha, and you know that. You need a mate—someone to help you run the pack and support the business." "You do know we all have our destined mates, right? I’ll wait until I find mine. I don’t want to be paired with someone who isn’t truly mine." I know the pack needs to be protected, and I have been doing that alongside the warriors. There’s no way we’d suffer an attack without being prepared. He doesn't understand. I don't want a mate just because he can help me. I want someone who understands me—my pain, the quiet moments, and the weight I carry when I say nothing at all. "There are rogues. We need a strong Alpha. You need a mate. You're twenty-three—you can’t keep waiting when someone like Alpha Zack wants you." Rogues? I didn’t expect him to say that. When Father died, Uncle was with him. According to the story he told, Father died protecting the pack. He’s my uncle, and I believe he did everything he could to save Father that day. We only received the news that he had passed. "We haven’t had an attack in ages. Father made sure to mind his business and keep peace with other packs. So what do you mean there are rogues?" I press down my words, holding back the urge to yell at him. "You wouldn’t understand; only a male Alpha would. I can’t tell you everything, but you need to think about it. I once suggested him as your mate, and now that he’s asking to have dinner with you... consider it." His tone carried more of a threat than advice. The expression on his face was familiar, as I had seen it before, mostly during his arguments with Father. They rarely agreed on anything, and that side of him always felt... dangerous. I just stared at him as he strode toward the door. But just before he walked out, I found my voice. "I don’t fear any rogues. If they want to attack, we’re ready for them. As for Alpha Zack, he can have dinner by himself. If I can’t find my mate, I’ll choose someone my heart desires." I exhaled, my words making him pause, but he didn’t meet my gaze. I didn’t need anyone to tell me he was angry. The clenching of his fists, the silence, and his body language said it all. I knew he wouldn’t check on me for the next few days. He had done it before; he wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. He was just trying to force me to do things his way when I’m the Alpha of this pack. Without a word, he marched out of the room. "Your uncle is such a headache," Rina, my wolf, purred in my head. I couldn’t agree more. Elara The sound of a creaking door caught my attention. Slowly, I lifted my head in that direction.
