Adrian
Heading back to the company, I proceeded to the boardroom, with my Beta leading the way. I had to head back to the pack to look into some matters, coming late for the meeting. As we strode into the room, I took my seat.
“Apologies; please proceed,” I instructed, relaxing on the chair, my attention not on the employee.
I had gone back for something imperative, and couldn't look away. I will deal with the elders later.
I’m Adrian, Alpha of the Moonscrest Pack. I’ve ruled for the past ten years, ever since my father passed away. I’ve lived like a loner. This pack, they're the only family I’ve got, and I have to protect them.
I once had a mate, but she was killed during a war. Since then, I haven’t really had a companion.
Each time I crave the warmth of my mate, it ends in unbearable pain, leaving me hollow, like the life's been drained out of me. I reached for my chest, just thinking about her, which makes my heart ache.
It’s been five years, and I’ve gotten used to being alone, thanks to my Beta, who's always been by my side.
There’s a curse in our bloodline that we must break. It began just before I was born. If an alpha doesn’t have a mate to calm him, he suffers on every full moon becomes a monster, even to his pack.
I’ve endured that pain for years. And when I lost my mate, I decided I’d suffer it for the rest of my life.
But according to the prophecy, there’s a cure. A woman who can lift the curse. If I don’t find her before the full moon falls on a lunar eclipse… I’ll have to die.
“Boss!”
The sound snapped me back to reality. I hadn’t even been paying attention to the employees.
Yes, they call me Boss when we’re among humans, because I work with them. But when it’s pack matters, they call me Alpha. I’ve got my pack members working here at the company, and everyone stays cautious.
I looked in my Beta’s direction, waiting for him to speak. But instead, he pointed toward the employee presenting a market trend using the projector.
“Ahh, okay!” I said, straightening up. “I think we should all put in more effort. Do your research and submit it to the secretary. The meeting is over.”
I rose from my seat, my Beta led the way out of the room, and we strode back to my office. Once inside, I made myself comfortable in the chair, pulled my laptop closer, and began reviewing the project at hand.
I had forgotten he had something to say back at the pack, until I heard him clear his throat.
He knew I hated it when he acted like this. If he had something to say, he’d always beat around the bush.
Looking up from my laptop, I watched him silently, waiting for him to spill the tea and be at rest—that's only if he will.
"Don’t make me wait. You know we have a lot to do, and there isn’t much time left.”
“I’m sorry, Alpha. It’s just… the full moon is around the corner, and…" He paused, holding back from completing his sentence.
I shook my head and straightened in my chair.
“I know the full moon is close. I could never forget the excruciating pain and the thirst for blood. There’s no way I could forget that trauma.” I said, exhaling sharply.
“Just get everything ready. I’ll go through it like I always do and try to control myself. Don’t worry, I won’t kill you.”
He quickly lifted his head, locking eyes with me.
The full moon was approaching, another night where I’d have to lock myself up to avoid hurting the people I swore to protect. The beast inside me would crave blood again. And I’d rather suffer than hurt my pack… especially not my Beta.
But he never listens. Every time I go through the pain, he’s always there, trying to help calm me down.
But it never works.
Each time I go through this pain, something inside me snaps, something I can barely control. I become the monster everyone fears, the beast within me craving blood, and leave bruises on my body fighting with the beast.
Only my mate could calm the beast.
And if she isn't here, I need a female werewolf with rare healing powers. Only she can break the curse.
"But Alpha, we can search for the alternative.” He insisted. “We can find her; all we have to do is search.”
“We both know it’s extinct. We can’t find someone who can heal not just werewolves, but humans too.”
This was the kind of conversation I hated having with him. There was always this push, this persistence, as if we hadn’t already tried.
But we had. Many times. And not a single success.
You can’t just find such a rare breed. One is yet to be born.
So you think. But I think you should listen to him this time, my wolf chimed in inside my head.
Stay out of this. I’d rather have this conversation with him than with you.
Why? Because I’ll always tell you the truth? He shot back.
I ignored him. This was his way of pulling me into another debate, and I wasn’t in the mood.
“Alpha, let’s do this one last time.” My Beta, Jai said, voice calm but urgent. “If we don’t try now, we’ll never find her.”
“Just give me time to think about it,” I said. “It’s not like we haven’t tried. We have. But nothing ever works out.”
The goddess already gave me a mate. She would have been the one to calm and heal me, but I lost her.
I still blame myself for what happened.
But it’s been years; holding back won't change what has eventuated.
"Think about it before the full moon. I’m sorry, but if you don’t, I’ll keep alluding to it.”
“Get the car ready. We don’t have much time.” I said, lowering myself back into the seat.
He nodded and walked out of the room. I returned to work, trying to push everything else out of my head. But only a few minutes passed before there was a knock on the door.
I lifted my head and gave a small nod, allowing him to enter.
“Alpha, the car is ready.”
I closed my laptop and nodded again. We headed down to the parking lot, got into the car, and drove out of the precinct.
I'm not certain where we intend to find such a breed, but giving it another chance wouldn't be bad. I have to protect my pack at all costs and not allow the monster inside to defeat me.
