Fleeing From Your Problems

1003 Words
Sitting next to Drew Caleb made Nancy's skin crawl. Soon, the flight attendants announced the departure of the flight, and Nancy set off on her journey with the person she would rather not see the most, sitting beside her. Drew Caleb's chiseled face was directed in front of him for more than one hour after the flight took off, and it only made Nancy more uncomfortable. Why was he ignoring her? Did he not know that she was the one he slept with in the hotel a night ago? She was the drunk one, so she could not make out the face of the man she had been with, as all that was on her mind was revenge, but he should have been able to recognize her, especially as his best friend's girlfriend. A lot of thoughts raced through Nancy's mind. Had Drew Caleb told Peter Crochet what happened and was now treating her like a tramp? Sitting next to him for the next ten hours would be the most tormenting feat. Nancy quickly took a look around the cabin, hoping to see a space where she could change her seat, but to her dismay, the first-class cabin was full to the brim. She was stuck there with Drew Caleb. A desperate Nancy thought about going to the economy section if need be, as it would make her feel freer than sitting beside the man that she had made the mistake of her life with. "Excuse me, can I change seats?" Nancy said the words to an air hostess without apology. Drew Caleb slowly turned to look at Nancy, and then he chuckled. "Sorry ma'am. The entire business cabin is taken," the hostess served Nancy and Drew a glass of wine as she replied. "I mean in the economy cabin. I don't mind flying economy," Nancy was determined to sit somewhere else. The hostess was shocked to hear Nancy say that. Who would want to leave a first-class, presidential, and luxurious cabin for the economy class? "She doesn't mean it, don't worry about it Agnes," Drew Caleb addressed the air hostess directly. As if he knew her. "Yes, Mr. Caleb. Can I get you..." the air hostess was replying when Drew Caleb waved his hand to dismiss her. Nancy was confused. She tried to insist on calling the hostess back to take her to an available economy cabin, but she noticed that the lady ignored her and hurried away from the place. It meant only one thing, and it was that Drew Caleb was the owner of either the aircraft or the entire airline. Nancy swallowed hard. "You cannot run away, we are 40,000ft above ground level, yet you try to escape? Where to?" Drew Caleb finally said something to her after two hours of ignoring her existence. Nancy's face immediately turned red. The man's voice sounded like the vibration of a bass guitar. His baritone soothed her turbulent mind instantly, and Nancy found herself relaxed, easing into her chair. She dared not look him in the eyes. "I'm not trying to run away. It's just not all that cozy here anymore," Nancy replied. "Cozy?" Drew Caleb laughed a little too loudly to the extent that other passengers turned to look at him, but they all smiled at him and nodded in acknowledgment. Drew Caleb had to be a very powerful man for others to smile at him after he had made a blunder. "Will you feel cozier in the rowdy economy class?" Drew Caleb asked. At that point, Nancy knew that what she had said made no sense whatsoever. "Why are you leaving home all of a sudden?" Drew asked. "Did you do something wrong? Why do I feel that you are running away from your own shadow," he added. Nancy had never felt that uncomfortable in her life. Was Drew Caleb deliberately tormenting her? Did he want to talk about what they did? "I need a vacation. Your friend cheated on me," Nancy eventually summoned the courage to look him in the eye and speak to him. Immediately she did that, she regretted it instantly. Drew Caleb's eyes were like the ocean. Calm on the surface, yet deep and torrential underneath. She was lost in his eyes for a second before she snapped back to the moment consequently. "How long did it take you to find out?" Drew Caleb looked away and sipped his wine. Nancy's face contoured. "You knew the whole time?" she asked. Drew Caleb scoffed and shook his head. Was Nancy dumb? He couldn't bring himself to settle for that narrative. "I'm his best friend, Ms. Saint," Caleb said grumpily. "Oh, yeah, right," Nancy muttered with embarrassment. She became very conscious of herself as she desperately wanted to ask if Drew Caleb told his friend about the ordeal she had with him. "Don't worry, your fiance is not aware of us." Drew Caleb had to have been hearing Nancy's thoughts because he spoke according to what was on her mind. Relief flushed all over her, but her face remained bright red as Drew Caleb continued to rub in the fact that both of them had done something supposedly abominable. "He's no longer my fiancé," Nancy refuted. Drew Caleb chuckled with sarcasm. "Everyone knows how impossible that is. Your family needs him, desperately." The sound of Drew Carter's voice and the tone it carried, weighed Nancy down a great deal. Was she that entangled with Peter Crochet to the extent that outsiders knew she had no means of leaving the relationship? She couldn't think of words to reply to Drew Carter with, so she just looked outside the window as the clouds passed by her. She was stuck in the world. "Is that why you're running away from home? Fleeing from your problems?" Drew Carter added. Nancy felt herself getting strangled by the man's unending and difficult questions that were targeted at making her feel on edge. She suddenly got up and replied, "I need to use the bathroom."
