Business card
I was late once again, I have no idea how do I manage to get an agenda, fill it with tasks and times and then… well then life happens. As I turned to mi right I could see Lilly was already there. I was meeting her for lunch. It was ages since last time we had time alone, to catch up, to gossip. I missed it.
“Hi sweetie! I already ordered some starters so they should be here in a minute” She was stunning, smiling, perfect hair, pale skin but with a healthy gloss on it, no makeup required and great look.
“You are a star! Thank you” I answered while I was giving her a good hug. My auntie Lilly was my dad’s oldest sibling, grew up with 3 brothers in a small country town… but if you looked at her now, you wouldn’t guess. “ So, what’s up with your life? Any news? Cool trips planned?”
“Shoot! I don’t need to do small talk with you and we know it” She answered back with a funny smile on her face. She knew I knew… oh well.
“ Ok, mom mentioned that dad has a suspicion that you might be seeing someone and then Helena said you have no plans for Eastern but you are not joining us at grandad’s this time” I left some seconds go by looking at her and smiling.
The food came at that moment giving her time to grab loads, fill her mouth and pretend she couldn’t talk. I ordered my drink and kept trying to get some info out of her to her bemusement.
“Listen darling, I am not sure what this is, but I just want to give it a go, and if I think it is worth wasting your time by all means I will tell you all about him. You will be able to meet him and cause him as much discomfort as you want. For now, you only need to know that I am having a great time and I am happy” And that was it, she was done with her speech and I won’t get any more info out of her, I knew it. “But enough about me, what about you? How is life treating you? Your mom also talks about you, you know?”
I filled her in with all my actual situations, new job, new flat (Ok studio… but at least it was for myself only) and new hobbies ( so new they were only projects and I hadn’t started them yet). “ Well I know you said you didn’t want to talk more about it” I started again “ but I need to know… how is him? Where did you met him?”
“Why so much interest all of the sudden in men? Anything you haven’t told me?” She queried with a soft, gentle tone that reminded me why I got on so well with her.
“You know… I have been thinking, what if it never happens to me? All I do is reading about amazing relationships and life goals and all I met are arseholes who only want one thing from me…”
“What? Read? From where?” she pointed out “ Show me your bag! Now!” Dam I was screwed…
“No need to dramatize! I was only nosy..” I tried to escape from it
“ I insist please, pass me your bag” Said while she graved my bad and quickly went into looking for something on it “ I knew it! You and your books! Aw darling you know you cannot hide anything from me. Ok now, what is this ‘New moon’?” Said her with a smile on her face.
I was so red and ashamed I had to lower my face “It is a book ok? Just that” mi voice was getting even lower.
“Which saga?” She insisted.
“ Twilight”
That was it, she started laughing really loud, bringing her head back and making it even more marked that she found my book and my reactions ridiculous. I had enough, I felt so ashamed I grabbed the book and my bag and started standing up ready to leave.
“Please don’t” She held my hand and looked at me with loads of love and concern”I just found it funny. Come on you have to admit this is funny! How many times have you read these things? 6? They are not even that good! I was expecting at least a Jane Austen one!” she kept mocking me.
“Well for your information only 3 and Jane Austen was last month’s ok?” I sat back looking at her with a pretty angry face.
“Ok, ok, I will leave you alone with your books” She said “But… following your question the answer is, it just happens, and yes, there are jerks, or better said, people that are not a fit to you, but others that are, you just need to have some trust and self-love” She looked back at me and saw my grimace “ I know is what everyone say but, it is true!”
“Sorry if I don’t follow your advice but I don’t recall you having that much luck on self-love neither!” I threw at her face. “ I am sure the perfect man is somewhere there for me! I just don’t know how to grab him and keep him”
“You don’t need luck, trust me. And that perfect man is also a dream, they are humans as us and they have their quirks, like you and me. So stop thinking anything perfect is going to fall into your arms or that it is anything you need at all” She looked down at me with that mother-like face she had when she was concerned about me. “Ok listen; I think you might need this. I was given it by a friend and it did help me. I cannot talk about it, part of the contract but… there is a phone number, give them a call if you really think that , the only thing you need is to find the ‘perfect man’ and that you know exactly what you need to make you happy. They will be able to help you”
I looked at her puzzled as she handed me a business card for ‘Women’s secret wardrobe’ with a phone number on it “Is this one of your jokes?”
“There is no need to be rude child, also trust me once more and let me know once you have used it what you found. Please be patient since they are not as high-tech as they should but they are doing fairly good if you think about it and… just have some trust on this, in the worst case it will be some fun”
I still didn’t knew what to think but before I knew it we had to go to our jobs so I gave her a last hug and kept the card in my purse… not sure what to do with it.
