Chapter 1: A fresh new start
Nikki was late.
"Hurry up, Nik!" called Mum from downstairs.
"Coming, Mum!" Nikki yelled back. She was going to miss her flight to her new high school- Mystic High.
She pulled on a light pink T-shirt, blue jeans and clipped her mid-length auburn hair neatly. There was no need for make-up. Nikki always thought 'practicality is naturalism'. Once she had finished getting ready, Nikki raced down the stairs with her suitcase to have breakfast.
"Aww...Mum, you didn't have to go through all this fuss just to make me breakfast," Nikki said. "After all, you know I barely eat that much."
"I know...," Nikki's mother said. "But it's going to be the last time I make you breakfast till the next few months!" Nikki's mother giggled back.
"Why do I deserve such a caring mother like you?" Nikki said pouting a smile.
Nikki gulped down her breakfast as fast as she could.
"BURRPPP! Thanks for the food, Mum."
Just as she finished her food, the taxi honked outside their house.
Rachel knew her daughter didn't like being treated like a child but she couldn't help herself this time. "Nik...," she started as she held Nikki by the shoulders. She had to look up since Nikki had grown so much.
"You promise me you will be safe?" Rachel blurted out taking in a deep breath.
"Yeah, don't worry about me, Mum. I'll see you during the winter break!" Nikki replied understanding her mother's concern.
"Alright, then. Bye, Nikki," Rachel said. They gave each other a hug goodbye and Nikki walked out the door.
Nikki walked towards the taxi, feeling excited to go to her new school. Moreover, Mystic High was the best high school in the world and Nikki had worked very hard for the scholarship.
Rachel couldn't help but become teary-eyed. Not because she was sad, but because she was proud to have such an independent and mature daughter.
"I've got to accept it," Rachel told herself. "She's ready."
Nikki placed her luggage into the booth of the taxi and it started driving to the airport. A few minutes later, her phone rang.
"Hi, Daddy!" Nikki said.
"Hey, Nik. Sorry I couldn't stay to say goodbye. My shift starts early today."
"Nah, it's fine, Daddy. That's what phones are for!" Nikki said and giggled a bit. Simon always loved that bit of enthusiasm his daughter gave him.
"Yeah, I suppose so," her father giggled back. "Are you excited?"
"More than ever," Nikki replied.
She then heard her father sigh. She knew that it was 'Serious Time'.
"Nik, listen, I know you and people don't work out, but remember to just be yourself. Okay?"
Nikki's heart dropped. She always had trouble making friends.
Ever since she was little, no one spoke to her or even came near her. Sometimes, she thought there was an electric shield around her that she couldn't see. After all, she was going to Mystic High for a fresh start.
"Okay, Daddy. I will."
Nikki didn't like faking things nor did she want to fake her personality so she knew that her father's advice was right. It was just what she needed.
"Thank you for everything, Daddy," Nikki said.
"No problem, Nik. I hope you enjoy this new school. You did work hard for it!"
"Haha! Alright, bye, Daddy. Stay safe at work. Love you, mwah!"
"Love you too, Nik."
Nikki ended the call and placed her phone back into her backpack. "Time for a fresh new start!" Nikki told herself.
