Chapter 1
It was pouring heavily on the streets of New York, and Steve could not wait to get back to the apartment he'd gotten his best friend, Bucky. He tried the food, which he had brought from the Chinese, if possible, not to get wet. However, he succeeded only partially. When he arrived at the front door, he unlocked the apartment door and stepped into the hall. His whole clothes were soaked and he began to freeze slowly. Therefore, he quickly ran up the stairs until he arrived in front of the apartment and also opened this door quickly. "Steve?" A muted voice sounded muffled from the kitchen. "Is it you?" "Yes, I'm back," he said, putting her food down on the shelf in the hall and then going to the bathroom for his soaking wet To throw a jacket in the bathtub. After that he entered the kitchen with the food in tow. There he saw his best friend Bucky Barnes, who already sat at the kitchen table and looked at him expectantly. "Hey," Steve greeted, shoving the food over to the dark-haired man before heading to one of the kitchen cabinets to get at the plates and cutlery. "Hey," Bucky replied as well and Steve could hear him tearing open the plastic bag. Apparently Steve was not the only one who almost died of starvation. "It's pouring pails outside," he said, and began to set the table. "Hmm," Bucky then mumbled, just looking rather absent-minded. "Bucky?" He asked, waving his best friend's hand over his face, "Do you even listen to me?" He blinked several times and Steve saw his eyes light up, "I'm sorry, I had a short dream." Then Bucky handed Steve his food and then took his own, as well as a fork. "What were you thinking of?", Steve asked and then began to eat slowly. "Oh, nothing important," the other but simply stopped and poked with the utensils continue unconcentrated in his food. Steve raised his eyebrows and looked at him searchingly. This oppressed silence did not look much like his best friend. In any case, that had never been the case before. Since Bucky resurfaced in this century, he had changed a bit. However, that did not change the fact that he was still his best friend. Though he had no idea what his best friend had gone through while frozen in the ice, he probably could not have imagined it, but now they were both back. They were finally reunited and Steve wanted to help his best friend find his way back to himself. Because already at their first meeting he had noticed that his best friend did not seem to remember anything about his past. Later, when asked about it, Bucky confirmed his suspicions. And though he played it down over and over again, Steve knew that Bucky was more worried about not knowing who he had once been than he would ever admit. "Come on, Bucky," he tilted his head slightly and looked at him reproachfully: "You know that you can tell me everything." He wanted to help him and could not have it when he saw that Bucky sighed, but then he opened his mouth and started to speak, "It's just ..." "What?" He asked immediately, trying to get him to continue speaking. "Do you feel too alone here?" He asked him, swallowing, although he tried to visit the man as often as he could, but his duty to the Avengers was high and the team demanded regular visits to him and he did not live with Bucky in the apartment, but still with the other six in the new Avengers Tower and unfortunately he could not change that easily. "Bucky, I'd like to help you, but ..." he said a little contrite and felt immediately bad because he wanted to be there for his best friend. "No, that's not the point," Bucky told him immediately, noticing how guilty Steve began to feel. "What then?" Steve lowered his fork and braced his elbows on the tabletop. His friend's needs were now more important than his food. Barnes took several deep breaths and stroked his longer, dark hair. "I want to be able to remember, Steve." Both stared at each other for a moment and silence spread between them. "I want to know who I was," he continued, "And I need your help. Please, Steve, please! " Steve's heart stopped for a moment and he just stared at the man in front of him for a moment. He also wanted Bucky to remember, the old days and their shared experiences. But would not Bucky's bad memories return? "Sounds so important to you?" Steve sounded cautious, not wanting his friend to make a hasty decision and having no idea how to help his best friend, Bucky lowered his head and put down his fork as well: "Yeah, Steve, I really want that." "Even if all the bad comes back then?" The blonde threw in to explain to his friend what that might mean. Bucky, however, did not wait for a second to reply: "The bad is as much a part of my past as the good, it makes me the person I am." Rogers took a few deep breaths and then fixed him with a piercing look: "Well, if that's really so important to you, I'll do anything to help you with it." Barnes's eyes lit up at these words and he grabbed Steve's hand: "Thank you, you're really a good friend." "But I really can not promise it will work," Steve interjected immediately, trying to make it clear that his efforts might not be crowned with success. "I know," Bucky nodded reassuringly, of course, aware of that, "but you can at least try it." Steve's smile gave a reassuring smile and immediately he began to think about how he might help his friend.
