Full Episode: THE NON EXISTENCE OF LIBRARY IN ORO:
IT'S NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE READING POPULA Let me do justice to this write-up by introducing who we are: The Oro people of Akwa ibom state constitutes five of thirty one Local Government area in Akwa Ibom state in the Niger Delta region of the Federal republic of Nigeria. Oro occupy a coastal stretch bordering the Ibibio of Uruan local government in the west; Oro shares a nautical boundary within the Atlantic Ocean in the South with Cameroon Republic. The South eastern nautical boundary is with the Efik people of old Calabar.
Research as it that Oro as migrated from several origin with special emphasis on Ekoi Ushahidit we have existed for hundred of years(100yrs) preceding the pre- colonial Era.
Oro the cradle of civilization could be dated back to Geon's which as a glorious history with Education. They were the pioneer host if early missionaries who travelled to Sub- Saharan Africa to introduce Christianity and education in most part if the world. Research as shown that as early as 1980's the first for indigenous professors from the University of Calabar were all Oronians the entire university was colonized by the Oro speaking people who make waves in their various field of academics that was the case the gives birth to the clinche ''OROPHOPIA'' Oro town was one of the most variable city in the South Eastern state trailing only Onitsha in Anambra State.
The citadel of learning called Methodist boys high school, Oron in 1905, Hope Wendell institute, Calabar 1895 and TTC (1970's) has produced the earliest intellectual in the South-South zone of Nigeria. Unfortunately Oro does the ploughing, the ranking, the cultivation, the pruning and the weeding only for them to be excluded from the crew that takes charges of harvesting. This is a case of a deliberate marginalization of the people. Thus the main discussion for this article is to draw Our attention to the negative effect of Non existences of library and how it affects the reading population in our dear treasured Oro Nation. NELSON MANDELA once said that ''Education is the most powerful weapon that can change the world''
since a reading society is a knowledge based society and by extension a developed society, this weapon of change can only be achieve through the established of a well equipped and functional library in our community.
WHAT THEN IS A LIBRARY?
Libraries are collection of books, manuscript, journals and other sources of recorded information. They commonly include: References work, encyclopedia that produces factual information and indexes that helps the user find information in other sources. creative works , including novels and poetry, non-fiction, audio media, visual media, such as bio graphics, histories and other factual report periodic publications , individual magazines ,scholarly journals published as part of a series.
THE NEGATIVE EFFECT OF NON EXISTENCES OF LIBRARY TO THE READING POPULATION
i) This limit the intellectual growth of the teaming youth.
ii) Establishing a library in Oro could be of benefit to the Oronians and this we lack. it could also serve as a research center.
Roles of library in promoting reading culture:
I) If a functional library is established here in Oro it will not only provides and enabling environment but also materials that offers more extensive and varied information than classroom studies alone.
ii) It will encourages and promote literacy and also improves concentration: The brain is not the mind; the mind is not the brain. The brain is the source of the mind and the root of the mind: it is the repository of electrical energy, it is the receiver and the transmitter; if it receive right it will transmit right. Therefore whenever we read the gab between what we do not know closes enhancing educational growth and development in and individual.
some may ask: Why do we still need a library in this digital age?
Libraries are calm, gives the reader the privilege to think extensively, there are accessible Thereby providing access to huge sources of information and always at the heart of the community with which they serve. Frantically, no matter where we are library is essential.
with this few reasons: Oro is expected to have a well arranged library that is catalogued and classified. Some cities like uyo, Abak and Eket are not without a library, so why is Oro and exception? Although people read for different reasons aside Education but it is saddening that student no longer have the mandate to do research at the library therefore reading culture in the zone is 0%. Can we attribute this to marginalization or lack of leadership? why have we been demystified in all facet of life? Were are the Don's of Oro?
This are some of the questions begging for answers if we must regain our identity.
Exit of Prof. Eskor Otoyo, Prof. Edet Uya, Computer Engineer Mfon Amana are great talent from Oro extraction yet Eskor Otoyo research center is not developed. Please the visions of our late hero's must be kept alive.
I strongly believe that if a public Library is established, Oro will be the most better now and in the nearest future.
