I PROMISE YOU

Soon, Lisa saw two strange men wearing patient clothes inside the office. They were carrying weapons. They opened the door without breaking it. Lisa was shocked. How could they have known Ray’s password? Only Ray and I know it. So how? She watched as they searched the room, clearly angry when they couldn't find her. Lisa unintentionally placed her hands over her mouth, making sure they wouldn't hear her breathing. After a while, the men made a call to someone, telling them that they couldn't find her. Then, suddenly, they started walking toward the closet. Lisa's eyes widened. How could they know about this place? Ray never even showed them this room. Before she could gather her thoughts, she heard a loud bang against the door. The men were trying to break it down. Lisa let out a frightened scream. She could hear them laughing. “Finally, we caught the little princess,” one of them said. “Let’s have some fun with her before we send her to the boss. He wouldn’t mind. Hahaha! This is going to be fun. I heard she’s beautiful.” The other man laughed in agreement. “Bastards,” Lisa whispered angrily. “Do they really think I’ll just bend to their will? They would have to kill me before I ever give myself to anyone other than my husband.” She looked down at her stomach. “They’re lucky I’m pregnant. Otherwise, I would have dealt with them myself.” Lisa tried to stand up from where she had been sitting, but she immediately felt pain throughout her body. She had been sitting in one position for too long, and her pregnancy made it even more uncomfortable. She gently rubbed her stomach. “Sorry, my baby. Mommy is stressing you, I know. Don’t worry. Daddy will be here in a flash. Just hold on a little longer.” She felt the baby move inside her. Lisa smiled softly. It was almost as if the baby had heard her and was responding. She thought it was adorable. But before she could enjoy the moment with her unborn child, she heard another loud bang. The men were getting closer to breaking through the door. Lisa had been trying to call Ray for help, but his phone wasn't going through. She was worried about herself, her unborn child, and her husband. Where could he be? She could only hope that he was safe. Lisa reached for one of the pistols from Ray's collection of weapons. She loaded it and pointed it toward the door, ready to protect herself and her unborn child. Lisa used to be a CIA agent, but she had quit because the job had become too dangerous for her family. One of the criminals she had caught during her time with the CIA had tried to kill her child. She couldn't risk her family for the sake of a job. But even though she had left the CIA, she still knew exactly how to handle a gun. She stood ready to shoot anyone who came through the door. Suddenly, she heard gunshots. Then came screams. Lisa froze. A few moments later, everything became quiet. Someone slowly approached the door. Lisa immediately moved to the side, hiding in the corner so she could attack whoever entered. The door opened. She quickly raised her gun and fired. But the person immediately knocked her gun upward. Lisa's eyes widened in shock. The person standing before her was her husband. Ray. “I didn't know this was how my wife wanted to thank me for saving her,” Ray said jokingly. “In the movies, the heroine always runs into the hero's arms after he saves her. But my wife wants to kill me instead. How unlucky—” Before he could finish, Lisa threw her arms around him. She hugged him tightly. Ray immediately felt his shirt becoming wet. He stopped joking. Lisa was crying. Ray's expression changed instantly. “Hey… I'm sorry. I'm sorry, my love.” “I was so scared,” Lisa sobbed. “I was about to kill somebody. What if you hadn't shown up on time? I could have hurt you.” She tightened her arms around him. “I was so worried about you. I thought… I thought you weren't coming. I thought something bad had happened to you.” She pulled away slightly and looked at him. “Did you get hurt anywhere? Who were those people? What do they want?” After Lisa had calmed down, Ray promised to explain everything. “We have to leave first. We aren't safe here.” He gently held her hand. “I'll explain everything on the way. Just bear with me for a little while.” Knowing that Lisa was pregnant, Ray didn't want her to move around unnecessarily. “Please change your clothes quickly. You can't stay in that nightgown.” Lisa immediately changed into a comfortable pair of jeans and a large top that accommodated her pregnancy. When she returned, she saw Ray packing several guns and other weapons into a bag. He also packed a few things they could eat later. The weapons he couldn't carry were hidden away for later use. Ray then handed Lisa a small portable gun. “Keep this with you. Just in case something like this happens again.” Lisa nodded. They left the room. Before they continued, Ray looked at her. “Close your eyes.” Lisa frowned but didn't question him. She closed her eyes. Ray carefully lifted her into his arms and carried her. Lisa immediately noticed a strong smell in the air. Blood. Her eyes remained closed, but she could smell it. What in the hell happened here? They continued walking. It felt like they had been walking forever before the smell of blood finally disappeared. Eventually, they reached a quiet and secure location. Ray carefully put Lisa down. She immediately turned toward him. “Now tell me what happened.” Ray took a deep breath. “It seems that at least fifty percent of the people being treated here were only pretending to be mentally ill.” Lisa stared at him in shock. “What?” “They were prisoners who had been brought here after being made to appear mentally ill. The people behind this gave the genuinely mentally ill patients a drug that made them extremely aggressive and violent.” Ray's expression became serious. “They would attack anyone they saw, except the boss and his men.” Lisa covered her mouth. “They attacked suddenly when everyone least expected it. They didn't spare anyone. They killed many of the doctors and nurses who were taking care of them.” Lisa felt sick. “The people who were brought here from prison were pretending to be mentally ill this whole time?” “Yes.” Ray nodded. “And the worst part is that they locked down the entire facility.” “For how long?” “Twenty-four hours.” Lisa's eyes widened. “The entire building is fully automated. Once the twenty-four-hour lockdown begins, everything is programmed to reboot automatically.” “Can't you override it?” “I could have, but the control panel was destroyed, and they also cut the network.” Ray shook his head. “We can't contact anyone from inside.” Lisa's heart sank. “But there is one thing they don't know.” “What?” “Once the building enters a twenty-four-hour lockdown, the police are automatically notified.” Ray looked at her. “They'll receive an alert and call back to check what happened. If no one answers, they'll most likely send someone to investigate.” Lisa felt a little hope. “So the police might be on their way?” “They might be.” Ray's expression remained serious. “But there's a problem.” “What?” “Even if they arrive, there's no way for them to open the building from the outside until the twenty-four-hour lockdown is over.” Lisa's heart sank again. They were trapped. Trapped inside a building filled with dangerous people. And she was pregnant. She instinctively placed a hand over her stomach. For the first time, Lisa was grateful that she hadn't brought the children with her. How would I have protected them? She was already worried that she was becoming a burden to Ray. Ray noticed the troubled expression on her face. He immediately placed his hand over hers. “My love.” His voice was calm and reassuring. “Nothing is going to happen to you or our baby. I'm here.” Lisa looked into his eyes. “There’s no reason for you to think you're a burden.” He gently rubbed her stomach. “It's my job to protect you and our family.” He smiled. “We'll get through this together. I promise.” Lisa smiled back. She knew her husband meant every word he said.
