Chapter 3. Improve Myself For You .

'' That is an even more reason for me to improve myself. To make both you and her proud of me.'' Kelvin said earnestly, '' I have thought about it. When I met you, I was a mechanic working at a small shop in the suburbs. The truth is, I am a graduate in business and finance. I came here with my parents when I was 6 years old. My parents were hardworking people who wanted the best for me but unfortunately passed away during my high school years in a car accident. I have been on my own since then.''

'' After seeing you going through so much just to provide for the family. I have decided to improve myself for you. I want to provide both you and my child the best in the world. I don't want my child to go through what I had to go through.''

Selina looked at him curiously, ' Wasn't he the one others said he was useless? I didn't know about his past. But if he is ready to become a reliable and dependable. Then I might as well give him a chance.' she thought.

''I'll give you a chance, for the sake of our child but you have to be honest with me. I want to know everything about especially about how you got a sniper tonight.''

Kelvin looked amused at what Selina said. He gave her a seat, went downstairs to make tea. Offered her some before continuing.

''About tonight, it was just a rouse. I paid the security guy of the building across the street to point a laser torch at any random person in the room. As for the negotiations, I learned from the books I've been reading,'' he pointed at the shelves, '' I started....''

He began to tell her his life story and plans for the future.

The next morning, Selina found her husband to be an ambitious yet inferiority-complex person. But seeing her going through all that suffering, he decided to come out of his shell to help his wife. Selina didn't know what was going in but she felt all warm and fuzzy thinking about last night. She decided to let him work at Smith Corporation since was majored in Finance and Business Management at university. But she had to inform her parents first.

At breakfast, she informed Grace of her intention.

'' Are you out of your mind. If you want to destroy the company your dad built, not on my watch.'' Grace, her mom, stated angrily.

'' You do know how much you dad had to go through to build this company before handing it over to you. Not even his dad, your grandfather, believed in him. We had to leave the family to come here to build a life together. Why? why? do you want to destroy his life's work.''

Selina was heart broken by her mom's words and behavior. So she earnestly said,

'' How about I give him a sum of money. For him to start a small company of his own and prove his ability before giving him a job at the company. ''

Grace was still angry but not wanting to stress out her daughter, she decided to give in.

'' And how much do you plan on giving him?''

'' Not much just 10 million cedis.'' Selina said after giving it som thought.

'' Are you insane, Selina?'' as expected Grace became angry again. After puffing for some time, she said, '' we are not worth about a 100 million cedis and you want to give about 50 percent of the cash we have?''

Truth be told the Smith corporation was worth about a few hundred million but the liquidity in their has was about 20 to 30 million cedis. She was not wrong to be angry at her daughter.

'' If he claims to be wanting to improve let him start and grow a company of his own just like your dad, Nathan. Why do you have to give him our money.'' The more she thought about it the angrier she became.

'' He is just a piece of trash that took advantage of you when you were vulnerable. He doesn't deserve to be here if not for Nathan not wanting your child to be born out of wedlock... ''

Grace saw that her words had hurt her daughter so she stop. She was still angry but her daughter and grandchild were more important.

Selina knew her mom was angry and didn't know what to do. She really wanted to help Kelvin.

All this while Kelvin was in the kitchen preparing the next meal. He decided to bite the bullet and talk for himself as he delivered the last portion of the meal.

''Mom,'' Kelvin said as took a seat, '' I really want to be a better man for myself and would like to provide for this family. I know I am an eyesore to you, but I would like to make you proud of me.''

Seeing that her useless son-in-law talking to her like an equal. She was fuming. since she couldn't take it out on her daughter why not this fool.

'' So you are the ibe putting ideas in my daughter's head. Kelvin how evil could you be, do you want to take the money and run away? are you so angry with me that you are planning on taking our money and fleeing ''

Grace said through gritted teeth.

'' Kelvin I know that I have been treating you badly but how could you be so evil to think about abandoning you wife and unborn child.''

Shocked by the accusations, Selina could only mutter, '' But... mom...''

''No buts, you now see what sort

of man you married. Dont worry divorce him, we can take care of the child ourselves. ''

''Mom, I am not after your money I just wanted to provide everyone with a good life and be the son-in-law you can brag about.'' Knowing that his mother-in-law was a person who loves face he decided to shoot his shot.
