Chapter 4

I went with Oliver to walk around our neighborhood and to also discuss limitations on certain things, like coming into my house at certain times. “Ok, rule one: you ask to come in, rule two: try not to tick me off, rule three: help me whenever I might ever need it.” I said with a serious look at Oliver. “I got it, no getting you mad or I pay the price.” Oliver said, doing “air quotes” around price. “Exactly my point, now deal with it.” I said and punched him in the arm. Oliver and I spent the rest of the weekend discussing how our week has gone and so forth and we both had fairly slow weeks, it was not too bad hanging out with Oliver, I was upset that Sunday was almost over and then school would go on for seven day of pure inhumane t*****e. I had gone to bed, dreading tomorrow, and Oliver was there telling me that I would live and Monday was just another day closer to graduation, I liked the idea. Monday, ugh, the start of a bad day for everyone that didn’t really want to be there. Students were saying how their weekends were and how they wish Saturdays and Sundays would last forever, I wished the same, but it wasn’t possible. I saw Oliver bro-hugging his friends and watching me semi-hugging mine with ease, Oliver and I met up and talked a bit then went to our homeroom together. “Bye guys, I’ll see you at lunch!” I yelled after my two friends, who were waving at me. “Alright class, welcome back, I am your substitute for today because Mr. Gorgon is out sick with the swine flu.” The teacher, Mrs. Rienesa, said to the class. Homerooms through sixth period were uneventful and boring, but lunch was buzzing with weekend talk and giggles and gossip about boys in the school. When I walked in, the lunchroom had boys scrambling to get me an empty seat; I just sat next to all the people I was friends with: which was a lot, and ate lunch. Diamond walked in and looked around for the “popular table” I guessed and no one scrambled to even notice she was there; it was bliss until she spoke. “Hay boys, the poplars are, like, here and we are ready to be seated now.” Diamond said and the only reaction was a person coughing, it was so hilarious. “Oli-wali, there you are, I, like, have been looking all over for you since our minor fight and I want to say I, like, forgive you for it.” Diamond said to Oliver, who was shocked at what she said. “So you nickname is Oli-wali huh?” I said and Oliver just sighed and stood up to tell Diamond off again. “Diamond, you and I will never be together, I don’t understand how you can’t get that through that thick head of yours. Get over it, leave me alone and never call me that again.” Oliver said and this time I had my phone with me to record Diamond’s break down and air it online. “You cannot refuse me Oli-wali, I, like, am the most, like, popular person and I will get what I want.” Diamond said and even I was shocked at that. “ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS: THE ** SHEET FOR THE SCHOOL TALENT SHOW IS POSTED, JUST ** AND WE WILL DECIDE WHO GETS IN OR NOT. THANKYOU AND HAVE A GOOD DAY!” A bright, chipper voice said from the loud speaker and I considered signing up. “Oh my gosh I can, like, sing so I will audition for the talent show for my wittle Oli-wali.” Diamond said and I want to see her fail, so I signed up to sing too. “Looks like you have a bit of competition, Diamond, I’ll see you there.” I said after I finished signing the entry form. Oliver was eyeing me the entire day and even on the way home, he looked stunned and happy and shocked at the same time. I looked back at him for an entire hour before he opened his mouth to speak. “First of all, I didn’t know you could sing and second of all; why didn’t you tell me?” Oliver said, fairly angry and enthusiastic when he asked. “A) I didn’t want to tell you because I thought I was not good, B) I just can sing ok, and C) I am doing this to get Queen Diamond off her high horse and back to reality.” I said , counting off the reasons on my fingers. “Oh, could you sing now?” Oliver asked, but it was difficult for me to even answer and so I sang. “I can fly among the legends, I can go beyond what I believe, I can soar… I will let go of the edge and fall with my wings spread out in the sun, I will let myself fall toward the end of the end. I am living all through my years, I will have all I can care for, I will soar, soar; soar, above the stars in the sky. I can fly (fly) to that great black hole in my mind and let the color wash in with the tide. I will soar, soar, soar, and soar till I die.” I finished my song and Oliver sat there with wide eyes, again, and an open mouth, again, on my bed. “That…was…awesome!” Oliver said and stood up very fast, fast enough to make me dizzy. “You really think so?” I asked and he nodded, that boy so understood. “Yea, you could sing that for the talent show and shove it in Diamond’s face when you win.” Oliver said, looking out with an evil grin. “Only just because I want to rub it in Diamond’s face and because I want to for fun.” I said and Oliver fist pumped the air. “Alright, let’s do this.” Oliver said and I went over my song again. DIAMOND “Oliver Haras will be mine; I will have my Oli-wali, no matter what.” I said with a vengeance “Diamond, Oliver doesn’t, like, like you at all and he even said so.” My less than popular friend said. “I, like, don’t care I will have him.” I said again, they all know I hate repeating myself. I looked at my perfect nails and sighed, they weren’t filed yet, and I then grabbed my file and filed them down. I looked at my gorgeous reflection and wondered what Oliver didn’t see that I always see. “It doesn’t make sense, I am the, like, most beautiful girl there and yet Oliver keeps arguing we will never date, which isn’t, like, true.” I said as my other not so popular friend put on my make up for me, I am glad to be me. “Beat her in the talent show and then Oliver will be yours.” My third not so popular friend said. I liked it, no loved it. “Alright how’s this: I can sing a song and it is a love song, I can sing about love.” I finished and assumed I sounded like an angel from heaven, because my friends’ faces were in shock. I will win this talent show and get my Oli-wali back.   ROSE      It was the very night of the auditions and my lesser opponent, Diamond, and I were ready. I was practicing my vocals and even from half way across the line I could hear Diamond’s monstrous nightmare of a voice from here. I was going to laugh like a lunatic when Diamond fails. “Good luck loser, you’re going to, like, need it when I wipe you on the floor.” Diamond said and I almost laughed at her ridiculous garment and makeup job. “I won’t need luck, but you might not want to look in any mirrors.” I said, but Diamond was admiring herself in a small pocket mirror. Hours of auditioned people went on and only the good ones made it, Diamond pushed her way in front of me to show off her “Skill” to the judges. “Hey, I’m, like, Diamond Flower and I will be singing the best song ever.” Diamond said and I was braced for her singing. “I am the best, and then I am the worst, but I will do whatever it takes to go beyond my dreams and defeat enemies with my song. I will succeed in dividing the line to me and me alone.” Diamond finished singing and by the judges faces; she wasn’t going to make it. “I can, like, tell I am moving on right?” Diamond asked the question I would have answered no to. “Diamond, you suck at singing, you sound like a donkey getting tonsillitis, giving birth and trying to speak at the same time. We think you will not go on, good-bye you awful singer.” A judge told Diamond and I saw her expression change from happy to upset to mad all at once, it was beautiful. I got on stage, tapped the microphone and breathed before I sang. Oliver was out in the crowd and I was glad, because I wanted to scream off the stage like a lunatic. I will soar, soar, soar, and soar till I die.” I finished the song I had sung before, with Oliver, and the judges clapped like it mattered a lot. “I think we have our next entry for the talent show.” The middle judge said and the other two nodded. Diamond came on stage and she was ticked off. “You call that, like, singing? I sung better with my song, I challenge you to a sing off.” Diamond said and then pointed at me. I grabbed a microphone, so did Diamond, and I sung first with my song. Diamond then sang hers, we both turned to the judges to see who won (I was sure it was me, but I couldn’t tell). “Rose wins, yet again, Diamond loses.” The judges said. I knew I would win, it was obvious.  “She cheated, she lip synced I saw it.” Diamond said with false intentions.     “Not true, I sung with my microphone on, you tried to trick them.” I said with a shrug of my shoulders.     “Cheater, cheater, cheater, cheater.” Someone chanted and the rest of the audience followed, including Oliver.     “Oli-wali, why are you doing this to me?” Diamond said, putting a hand over where her heart is.     “STOP CALLING ME THAT, I DON’T LIKE YOU AND I NEVER WILL” Oliver said, again, to Diamond’s “popular” face.     “Wah, you don’t like me, like, wah.” Diamond fake cried all the way off the stage.     “Damn right I don’t like you, now stop acting like your all that!” Oliver shouted at the “popular” and winked at me. I stayed and went to the show to just have fun, I also saw Diamond constantly looking at Oliver; who was staring at me, and crying over him. Diamond no longer had fun little la-la land to think she was popular and dating Oliver, it was bliss knowing she finally met her match to knock her off that high horse of hers.     Everybody, except Diamond, voted for me to win, so I won three hundred and ninety- nine students to one. It was the best day of my time in this prison of a school; it got even better when Oliver gave me roses, with Diamond watching, after the show. Diamond said she was waiting for her luxury limo and everyone was invited to a party at her luxury mansion, which was not real of course, but no one went or even cared.     It was a good night and for once in my dreaded life, I had fun. I let my dad pick up Oliver, who sat in back, so his parents wouldn’t have to worry. I looked at Oliver in the mirror and his eyes were turning red, so I figured he was hungry for dead animal blood or a dying animal’s blood. Oliver said good night to me and my dad, and then Oliver ran into the back of his house to get a bite to eat. Ha, funny vampire joke right there.
