Maria, along with 9 other women accused of witchcraft, has now been brought before the Inquisition. The archbishop, who interrogated the other women one by one, asked her when it was Maria's turn:
- "Will you say a prayer from the Bible?”
Maria answered the court by reciting a prayer from the Gospel of Matthew. His husband Pedro, who was present at the hearing, and their children Bruno and Sofia were also watching with watchful eyes, a little scared, listening to other questions the judge would now ask.
