CHAPTER SEVEN Erastus’ statement made no sense to me, but I didn’t get a chance to ask for clarification. He just marched up to the front gates and spoke to the two gargoyles in an odd, growling language that sounded vaguely German. I didn’t understand a word he said, but the two gargoyle guards must have, because they nodded and moved aside, opening the gates to allow all three of us to enter. Simon and I entered through the open gates quickly, doing our best to avoid making eye contact with the gargoyles. Despite not being a prisoner, I felt nervous about looking at the gargoyles just the same. Once we were on the other side, the gates slammed shut behind us.
