The Collision
Nicole Dee had always felt like she didn’t quite belong. Growing up in a small coastal town in the Philippines, she stood out not just because of her Korean features—her almond-shaped eyes, porcelain skin, and jet-black hair—but because of her insatiable curiosity about the world beyond their sleepy village. While other girls her age spent their days gossiping or helping with family businesses, Nicole would sneak away to the rocky cliffs overlooking the sea, where she would lie on her back and stare at the stars, dreaming of distant galaxies and the mysteries they held. Her parents, both hardworking fishermen, didn’t understand her fascination with the cosmos. “Why waste time looking at the sky when there’s work to be done?” her father would grumble. But Nicole couldn’t help it. The stars called to her in a way she couldn’t explain, as if they held secrets meant just for her. That night, the call was louder than ever. The air was warm and humid, the kind of night where the ocean breeze carried the faint scent of salt and seaweed. Nicole sat cross-legged on the rooftop of her family’s modest home, her notebook open in her lap. She had been sketching constellations, trying to map out the patterns she saw in the sky. The moon was a thin crescent, casting just enough light to see by, but the stars were brilliant, scattered across the heavens like diamonds on velvet. And then it happened. A streak of light tore across the sky, so bright it made Nicole gasp. It wasn’t like any shooting star she had ever seen. This was larger, faster, and it seemed to pulse with an otherworldly energy. For a moment, the entire sky lit up, as if the sun had risen in the middle of the night. Nicole shielded her eyes, her heart pounding in her chest. The light disappeared as quickly as it had come, leaving behind a faint trail of smoke that drifted lazily toward the horizon. Nicole scrambled to her feet, her notebook forgotten. She had to see where it had landed. Grabbing a flashlight from her room, she slipped out of the house, careful not to wake her parents. The streets were quiet, the only sound the distant crash of waves against the shore. Nicole followed the direction of the smoke, her flashlight cutting through the darkness as she made her way toward the dense forest that bordered the town. The forest was alive with the sounds of the night—crickets chirping, leaves rustling in the breeze, the occasional hoot of an owl. Nicole’s flashlight beam danced across the trees as she pushed deeper into the woods, her excitement growing with every step. She had no idea what she would find, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was something important. And then she saw it. The object was partially buried in the ground, its metallic surface gleaming in the beam of her flashlight. It was shaped like a pod, sleek and smooth, with intricate symbols etched into its surface. The symbols glowed faintly, pulsing with a soft, blue light. Nicole’s breath caught in her throat as she approached, her heart racing. “What…is this?” she whispered, reaching out to touch the surface. It was warm, almost alive, and the symbols seemed to shift under her fingertips, as if responding to her touch. Before she could process what was happening, there was a loud hiss, and the pod began to open. Nicole stumbled back, her flashlight falling from her hand as a cloud of steam erupted from the pod. She shielded her face, her mind racing with a thousand questions. When the steam cleared, she saw him. A man lay inside the pod, unconscious but breathing. He was tall, with dark hair and sharp, angular features that hinted at Japanese ancestry, though there was something else about him—something otherworldly. His skin had a faint, almost imperceptible glow, and the symbols on the pod seemed to extend onto his body, tracing delicate patterns across his arms and chest. Nicole’s first instinct was to run, to leave this strange man and his even stranger pod and never look back. But something stopped her. Maybe it was the way he looked so vulnerable, lying there in the wreckage. Or maybe it was the way the symbols on the pod seemed to hum with a quiet, almost comforting energy. Whatever it was, she couldn’t leave him. “Hey,” she said softly, kneeling beside the pod. “Can you hear me?” The man didn’t respond, but his chest rose and fell steadily, a sign that he was alive. Nicole hesitated for a moment, then made up her mind. She couldn’t carry him on her own, but she could go back to town and get help. She just had to hope that no one else had seen the crash. As she turned to leave, the man’s hand shot out, gripping her wrist with surprising strength. Nicole froze, her heart pounding as she looked down at him. His eyes were open now, dark and intense, filled with a mixture of pain and determination. “Please,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Help me.” Nicole’s breath caught in her throat. He spoke in English, but his accent was unlike anything she had ever heard. She nodded, her fear giving way to a strange sense of purpose. “I’ll help you,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions raging inside her. “But we need to move quickly.” With great effort, she helped him out of the pod, supporting his weight as they stumbled through the forest. The man—Tatsuya, as she would later learn—was weak but determined, his eyes scanning their surroundings as if expecting danger at every turn. By the time they reached her home, Nicole’s arms were aching, and her mind was spinning with questions. Who was this man? Where had he come from? And why did she feel such a strong connection to him, as if they had known each other for years? She didn’t have the answers, but as she laid him down on her bed and began to tend to his wounds, she knew one thing for certain: her life would never be the same.
