Leah POV:
I’m standing at the bottom of the stairs in front of my packhouse, Brett and Gabe are standing behind me, while I greet all of my guests. Except these weren’t my guests. These were the council’s guests, yet all but the youngest council member, a middle aged wolf named Jonah, were inside sipping my tea and eating my food, while I’m forced to socialize.
I’m trying hard not to show my annoyance but I don’t think I’m succeeding. About half of the packs have already arrived and every introduction was more of the same. Jonah would introduce the Alpha, I would introduce myself and the guys. Brett would address their lead warrior and tell them where to go while I invited the Alpha and Beta inside for refreshments and one of the omegas would lead them in. I was bored out of my mind, hot and hungry. I couldn’t wait for all this nicety bullshit to be over.
Blood Moon pack is here Logan mindlinked the three of us.
Oh great. I can’t wait, Gabe replies back and I have to bite back my chuckle. The Alpha of the Blood Moon pack, a balding man in his 50’s named Jack Peters had proposed to me on more than one occasion. His mate died before they could produce any heirs and he was desperate. Who better to make pups with than a young, fit, and fertile Alpha female who comes with enough wealth to pay off his substantial debts, a powerful army, and another 1,000 wolves to add to his numbers? All I could say to the thought of that is f**k no, I’d rather die.
50 bucks Leah punches him before the weekend is up I hear Gabe mind link.
Are you serious? I reply
You’re on Brett answers him.
I roll my eyes, I want in on this, but make it $100. I’m not gonna hit the creep. The thought of my skin touching his makes my skin crawl, even if it’s my fist.
Deal I hear all three of them reply. Great, pressure is on.
The SUV’s holding the Blood Moon pack pull up to the front of my house. Instantly my skin begins to crawl and Sienna is on high alert. She hates the bastard more than I do.
Jack Peters steps out of the back looking as smug as usual. Typical cocky Alpha. His Beta, whose name I could not remember for the life of me, stepped out of the car behind him. The poor man always looks terrified. “Ah Leah,” Jack said walking right up to me, “how lovely to see you.”
I can feel Brett and Gabe tense up behind me. The bastard didn’t even use my title. We were not friends or family. Even poor councilman Jonah looked a little shocked, “Alpha Jack,” I replied emphasizing the word Alpha, “I didn’t realize we were on a first name basis.”
He looked unbothered by my words as he tried to come in for a hug. I easily side stepped him. “Of course we are dear, if you would only just consider my marriage proposal....”
I had to stop myself from vomiting all over his shoes. “We’ve been over this multiple times. I will not marry you, nor will I ever. Now if you will excuse me, we have many guests coming for this meeting, and I do not want to keep them waiting.” I gestured over my shoulder at the Omega who was standing on the steps behind us, “Lacey here will show you and your Beta your accommodations. Please feel free to have some refreshments once you are settled.”
I turn my back towards him as Lacey walks forward to show them to their rooms. Jack’s Beta, who looks as uncomfortable as ever, smiled politely at Lacey and began to follow her. Jack stood there for a moment looking completely appalled that I turned my back on him. He opened his mouth to say something when Jonah cleared his throat, “Alpha if you will please head inside, you will have time to speak to Alpha Giammetti later on.”
No he won’t. Not if I can help it. But I am grateful Jonah stepped in. I wish I could have put him in one of the cottages, preferably miles away from my room, but unfortunately, we’ve had a long standing alliance with Blood Moon since long before I was born, and as much as their Alpha skeeves me out, I will not jeopardize the alliance.
Alpha, Fallen Oak pack is here, Logan’s voice rings through my head.
Ok thank you.
I don’t know much about Fallen Oak except the basics, but they are a well respected pack in the region and their Alpha was well renowned. It might be good to form an alliance with them while they are here.
I was lost in my own thoughts when I felt Sienna tense up in my head. Are you ok? I ask her.
Something feels different. I instantly go on high alert looking around. Nothing out of the ordinary. Everything smells and looks the same, the guards all looked relaxed and unconcerned.
Different how?
I don’t know, different, she snapped at me, It’s the Fallen Oak pack.
What do you mean? Do you sense danger?
I’m about to tell my guards to stop them from coming in any further until we can get a handle on the situation when the scent hits me like a freight train. It smells like citrus; oranges, limes, even lemon, all mixed together in one glorious fruit cocktail. Goddess, what was that smell?
“You smell that?” I ask Gabe and Brett who are looking at me like I had three heads.
“Smell what Leah?”
“The fruit. It’s like a citrusy smell-” I don’t finish my thought, as two black SUV’s pull up and before anyone exits, Sienna absolutely loses it.
MATE! MATE! MATE IS IN THAT CAR!
Oh s**t. This is not good. But it explains how I’m the only one who smells that intoxicating smell. Damn, I heard about the mate bond smell, but that alone may make all of this worth it.
But no, the panic starts to set in as the door to the first SUV starts to open and I see a long jean clad leg begin to emerge. Sienna is going nuts and it takes all my willpower to keep her below the surface. I can’t help myself, it’s like I’m in a trance and I take a step over so I can get a better look.
My heart stops as we make eye contact. Sitting with one leg out of the car, the other still in, his hand on the door as if he was still in the middle of opening it and suddenly got distracted, is the most beautiful man I have ever seen. His exposed muscular arms were the color of milk chocolate, with a sleeve of tattoos going down all the way to his hands. Oh how I want to lick those tattoos. He was wearing a grey t-shirt that allowed me to see his clearly defined shoulders and pecs. His dark hair was kept short and in a tight fade. He’s staring at me as if he was in a trance, and honestly I probably looked the same damn way. I knew Brett and Gabe are looking at me like I’m crazy and poor Councilman Jonah looks confused as ever. But I could not take my eyes off the s*x god frozen in front of me.
His face was just as beautiful as his body. His eyes look hazel but I could see them flashing to a darker green, no doubt his wolf trying to break through just like Sienna was. I could get lost in those damn eyes. And his lips, oh Goddess, his lips. They were large and plump and even his dark scruffy beard could not take away from the deliciousness that are those lips.
“Leah. Leah. What’s going on? Are you ok?” Brett asked me, shaking my arm and breaking me out of my trance. Shaking my head to clear the fog that is my brain, I looked back at the man who’s supposedly my mate and immediately began to panic.
He’s out of the car now and headed right to me. He’s as tall as I imagined, well over six foot. The darkening of his eyes told me that his wolf was on the surface and no doubt had plans of marking and claiming me right then and there, much like Sienna was yelling for me to do the same in my head.
Hell no. I could not let him do that in front of everyone. All the fears I had of meeting my mate were coming to the surface as I watch him shake off someone, most likely his Beta, and start to head towards me. He’s an Alpha. There is no doubt of that. f**k. f**k. f**k. What would he want from me? Would he think he could take over my pack? Would he expect me to move to wherever he was from? What would the council think? The other packs present? Oh Goddess I could not handle this now.
Talk to him! Sienna yelled at me frustrated. You do not know any of these things. Talk to mate!
Alright, alright. I will. But I need to talk to him in private. Not here. It was bad enough everyone around watched us staring at each other like fools, they could not be privy to this conversation too.
Quickly, before my new found mate could say anything, I walk up to him, lightly touching his arm. Sparks fly. Oh goddess, how the hell am I supposed to think straight around him?
“Hey, can I talk to you. Over there? In private?”
I can see the concern immediately form in his eyes as they go from dark green back to the initial hazel. “Um, sure.” he replies clearly confused.
Leah, what the f**k is going on Gabe yells in my head.
Nothing. Can you and Brett cover for me for a few minutes? I’ll be right back.
Um sure. Is everything ok? Do you need help?
No! No, sorry, I’m fine. I’ll explain everything later ok? Just cover for me.
No problem Leah. But you are telling us what the hell is going on later.
Yeah, yeah I know.
I looked back up at my mate. Somewhere in my brain I know his name. I know all the Alpha’s names. But I’m drawing a blank. He’s staring at me with a cross of confusion and concern. I know he’s fearing the worst at this point. I nod towards the back of the pack house where our gardens are. We would be far enough away from the prying eyes and ears of the council but still close enough so I can keep an eye on everything.
I have to get through the conversation without losing focus. The fate of my pack depended on it. But it’s damn hard with the intoxicating smell of citrus overwhelming my senses and the sexiest f*****g man I ever laid eyes on staring at me with a smoldering intensity. Oh Goddess, give me strength.
