Driving a few miles on to the route, we finally came across a large facility. It was almost as large as the headquarters for the Interspecies Council's facility in Washington DC. There was a crowd of people greeting us at the door. In the center was a beautiful, medium-built woman. The familiarity of her features caught my attention.
The car was stopped at the door and my door was opened. She began to speak. "My hybrid niece. So we finally got to meet. My brother has tried to keep you from me your whole life."
She studied me for a moment with a weird smirk before continuing. "I'm sure he hates me for going through such extremes. I just want to spend time with you, my dear. I don't mean to stare, I'm just amazed at you being mostly wolf. I thought you would be bigger. Your brother is the size of an alpha wolf and gives off a stronger aura than you are right now." She said, not realizing I had become skilled at suppressing my aura when I felt things could be threatening. Things felt as though things could become really threatening, really quickly.
"My evil aunt. I thought you would look more, I don't know, evil. You look...basic." I replied, irritated at her words and rolling my eyes.
"Oh, I'm far from basic. Can someone get her out of the car and take her into the grand hall? We need to examine her."
"I want to see my baby before I do anything," I demanded.
"You will see him soon enough. We've just finished setting up the nursery and your room will be ready soon. You will feed him, then you will get a nice post-birthing pampering. While they finish setting up all of that, you will be examined."
"I know I've ripped my stiches, but I just need a bandage. I really don't want to be examined in a grand hall in front of others," I said, not knowing exactly what she was talking about. I did feel the pain from ripping the stiches as I was lifted out of the car but knew I couldn't show it.
She looked at me for a few moments and, without replying, she turned and walked away. I was placed in a wheelchair and wheeled into the building. Going down the hallway, heads poked out of the rooms and I could hear all the comments and questions being made. I was pushed through a door into the middle of a large room surrounded by chairs. From behind me I heard a voice.
"Lexi! Where is Amhurst? How are you? You look horrible." I heard the familiar voice of my grandmother's cousin Ma'dear.
"Why am I being brought in here? What are you going to do to me in here?" I asked.
"We are not here for a medical exam. You will be evaluated more or less. Now, you never answered Ma'dear's question. How are you feeling Dear?" She asked.
"Well, I've been better. I mean I just gave birth a few hours ago and have gotten very little rest. I woke up to find out my ex-mate had taken my pup from me, my pain medicine has worn off, and my stitches feel like they are being ripped out of me. But instead of seeing my son, resting or getting another dose of pain medicine, I was brought here." I replied.
"You must be hungry. With you being so irritated, I'm surprised you didn't try to feed on Gregory. I'm sure that would have helped heal you faster."
"Who?" I asked and she pointed at the driver. "Oh, sorry George. Nah, his supernatural blood doesn't smell appealing and if I fed on him, who would lead me to my pup?" I asked.
"Focused. I like you. If you are able to be tamed, you would make a good apprentice." She said, smiling at me. That gave me an idea of how I needed to play this.
"Tamed? Is that what you want? I think the fact that the council couldn't tame me is a great indicator I'm not able to be tamed. I'm not a show monkey that will do tricks for peanuts. But you know that already, right? It's what made me appealing to you. You like my independence and strength. My ability to take control and control others." I said, smiling at her.
"You're right, but we still need to see what side you are on. I've been following your life. You've gained prominence in the Council. Working for them for so many years but you have still been through a lot. Do you really think you can rely on their system for your safety? For your pups safety?" she asked.
"No, I absolutely do not. If you have been watching you should know, I have been tamed my whole life. To be honest, I have been questioning a lot lately. I did trust them with my training and development and even used their resources to train other. They should have been there for my safety. The first chance they got, they abducted me to take my child because they fear him. I've worked a long time with the Interspecies Council. I've become excellent at doing everything I was supposed to do. All this time, I've been teaching hybrids how to suppress their abilities, how to conceal their alternate traits, and how to just blend in. You can't even detect my strength because I have become so good at hiding it. I'm sick and tired of always doing what I've been told. Personally, I believe I only have to do this because those in charge aren't strong enough to be leaders to control the masses. If those in charge were as strong or stronger, then it wouldn't be a problem if everyone could just live normally. I just want to live a normal life like everyone else." I teared up as I honestly poured out my emotions.
"Alexandria, you are not normal. Your life will never be normal. You were born for a purpose. Do you understand the sacrifice of your grandmother?" she questioned.
"Amhurst explained to me my grandmother's mission while we were captured. To be honest, I understand the reason a change is necessary. I understand that it is the same family that ordered her killed that has been sitting on the throne ruling all supernaturals. And the council which is supposed to advise them has lost touch," I admitted.
"You're right! It is time for a change. But tell me, why did you betray Amhurst if you agreed with what she was saying?" Ma'dear asked.
"I didn't betray her. She is a seer. She informed me of two visions while we were there. She told me what to do to escape. She explained the outcome to me. How did she not know what would happen afterward? She was raised in a coven. Did you not teach her how to remove a cloak?" I questioned, dramatically waving my hands for effect.
"Ma'dear, we will get her back. It just seems to me that Alexandria understood that certain sacrifices need to be made in order to get to where you want to be. We will make sure we can get our seer back. Now Alexandria, so that's why you ran off the way you did. I was wondering why it was so easy for her to lure you away. I'm just glad your mate was able to track you when he did. You could have lost the pup doing things the way you tried to." she said in a nurturing tone.
"Speaking of. When can I see him? I need to nurse him." I anxiously said, gasping at my swollen breast.
"He will be brought to you soon. We just need to see how long we will keep you and if you are of any use. The board will all be here shortly to analyze you to see if you are someone worthy of being around." she said, turning and waving to whoever was at the door to enter.
