Chapter Thirty Diane’s head felt as if she’d rammed it through a brick wall. She wanted to say something, ask for something, but the thought of opening her mouth to speak was the equivalent of someone slamming a hammer to her head over and over. Then the hammer was in her ribs, her chest, and she felt an incredible pressure in her stomach and lower. She was leaning at an odd angle. “Diane…” She heard her name called from a distance. It hurt to think, but slowly she realized something wasn’t right. “Diane, please.” She heard the voice again: Annie. She tried to talk, but all she could get out was a sound. What was wrong with her? There was ringing again. It was familiar, but it seemed so far away. “Diane, I can’t get out.” It was Annie, and she sounded scared, but Diane was so tired.
