At the Hospital
Tiana The doctor handed me a test result. I don't know why but this morning I woke up to felling dizzy. I even vomited thrice jus this morning. "You are pregnant Mrs. Tiana." The news hit me hard like a brick, catching me completely off balance, I wasn't expecting this. Not this time. "And I must advice against donating blood as it could endanger your fetuses." The doctor's hoarse but clear words sounds like garbage to my ears. How can I stop donating the blood when my husband is bent on making me do it. Not even one baby?! "Doctor, are you sure about what you are saying? How can I be pregnant? I always use drugs to stop the pregnancy from coming." "Ma'am, I understand your plight, but those drugs can only guarantee you 80 or 90% not 100." "But we are not ready, I'm not right now." I lamented, my heart breaking at the news. I don't want to be pregnant yet. I opened my mouth to say something else but before I could do so, I saw my husband burst into the spacious ward and ran towards me. I hid the result behind me, not wanting him to see it. Ethan and I had agreed to hold off on starting a family until he felt prepared, though I couldn't comprehend his reasons, I respected his wishes. "Ethan, what are you doing here? I hope you are well?" I asked smiling, trying to put up a facade of composure while turmoil churned inside of me. Why now of all times. "Tiana, Penelope needs your blood, now!" His voice was frigid and authoritative. "Follow me." "But..." I protested but I know he isn't hearing any of it. I have known better than to argue with him. In this relationship, Penelope is more important than me. Penelope is my husband's cousin and since she got sick, Ethan has entrusted the duty of a blood bank into my hands and I can't refuse. He had saved my family once and now I felt obligated to repay him. He dragged me down the hall roughly, the nurses' and workers eyes following us. They might be pitying me right now. Everyone knows about it. I clutched the pregnancy result behind me tightly. He dragged me into a VIP ward and there lay Penelope, her once vibrant complexion now drained of life though she is still breathing. She had been battling with her sickness for almost a year now. "Ethan," I called my husband. As he turned to me, his face was paced with anger and fear. "I can't do this. I can't." "You can't do what?" He grabbed my wrist harshly. "Do you still remember that your family is in my hand? Have you forgotten the help I rendered to your family? Have you?" "I haven't forgotten, but I'm p..." He cut me off angrily, not ready to hear whatever I'm trying to say. All he was focused on was Penelope. "You don't want to annoy me this morning, Tiana Hunter." My heart sank as my husband ignored me, even though my pregnancy was an unwanted one at that moment, he should have tried to listen to me. "Take her blood now!" He barked at a nurse making me flinch in fear, his demeanor torn between concern and panic. The nurse guided me to a vacant bed and lay me down while the doctor perfectly drew out the blood which was passed to another nurse for Penelope's transfusion. I looked over at Penelope and for the first time in my life, I wished her dead. I wish she had died long ago. All these would have been prevented. Ethan and I had been married for almost a year and a half now but there was never a time that my husband had genuinely cared for me or stayed with me. He is always with Penelope in the hospital or busy at work. It even got to a point where I considered myself as nothing to Ethan than a pawn. After the transfusion, I was discharged, feeling weak and unsteady on my feet, unable to take more than a few steps without faltering. "Ethan," I called out to my husband, my voice weak and debilitated. "I have something to tell you." "What is it?" He asked nonchalantly, his gaze still fixed on Penelope who was lying on the bed, but this time, her skin was starting to gain its beautiful color. "I'm pr..." "Mr. Ethan, right?" I was interrupted by a doctor. He shot me an apologetic look for his rudeness and I nodded. "Miss Penelope is getting well, and this time, we might discharge her, but we will need another packet of blood." Ethan swung his head around, facing me, looking me straight in the eye. This was the first time he had ever caught my eye, but it was another blood request, not because of his love for me. "Emily, you know what to do. Take her back to the bed and draw the blood, doctor." He commanded I wanted to protest and shout out that I was pregnant or speak some sense into his head, but I knew deep down that I couldn't do that. Never! He has my family in his hands. "Hmm!" I nodded slowly in agreement and hopped on the bed like an obedient dog. My husband went back to his previous seat beside Penelope, tenderly caressing her face with the utmost care that he had never shown to me. I couldn't help but feel left out and neglected. And here I am, patiently sitting and watching as the nurse draws out my blood. Endangering my kids for my husband's selfish needs. **** For the first time, Penelope was wheeled out of her ward, her once radiant face now pallid. She looked at my face and flashed me a bright smile but what people can't see is the wicked grin below her smile. "Tiana," she beckoned, instructing the nurse to bring her closer. Dismissing the nurse with a false smile, she leaned towards me. "I knew you can never refuse to donate your blood. You have to repay Ethan." I was fuming in anger but managed to fake a smile like hers, "I did that because I can't watch you die." "Is that so? My blood bank?!" I turned around and grabbed Penelope's collar, I have never been this fierce in my life but she touched a button she shouldn't have. "Listen, Penelope, I don't give a f**k about who you are to my husband, but let me warn you, don't cross the line." "Your husband?" Penelope laughed. "Don't raise your hopes, you are nothing more than a blood bank to him. Do you think he cares about you? So foolish!" "What did you just say?" My grip on her collar loosened and using that opportunity, Penelope pushed me hard. And I fell to the floor face-first. The last thing I saw was Penelope's wicked smile which carried a lot of meaning beneath it. Then, I passed out.
