"You lost one of your fetuses, Mrs. Tiana," the doctor's voice echoed throughout the almost empty ward.
I wanted to cry but surprisingly, I could only laugh out my pain. The pain was so unbearable.
My husband and Penelope gasped, their eyes widened, their expression torn between shock and curiosity, which I hated.
"You are pregnant?" Ethan asked, not taking his eyes off my belly. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Penelope shot a wicked gaze at me which I caught and return with the same hatred.
"As if you will listen to me." I hissed, sitting upright. I have been advised severally as soon as I woke up to always sit upright, eat a balanced diet, blah blah blah.
I should have been happy, I should be smiling right now, but how can I? When the person who should have fathered the baby didn't even care less about my pregnancy.
Silence enveloped us!
Good.
"I'll excuse you guys now." The doctor spoke, his words piercing through the silence like a knife piercing through a cake. He took his leave, my eyes seeing him off.
As soon as the doctor left, Ethan erupted right in my face. "You are pregnant and you couldn't tell me. What if I had lost all the fetus?"
"If I told you, would you have stopped me from donating blood to your Penelope? Answer me, Ethan! Would you?" I thundered at him and his palm landed on my cheek, shutting me up.
"Don't you dare shout at me! Who do you think you are? Who?" He barked, his eyes red.
"I will shout at you as I like, Ethan. You are just a good for nothing man." The tears poured down my cheeks but I quickly wiped them away, I can't allow myself to show them my tears, they aren't worth my tears. "You..you killed our baby. You monster!"
"Call me that one more time and you will face my wrath." His voice was daring me to speak against him one more time.
"And you," I turned to Penelope, mustering all the hatred and anger I had for her. "You are a woman yourself or aren't you? What if one day your husband did the same thing to you? What will you do? Huh?"
Penelope eyed me with disgust, I know my words are sinking I but she doesn't want to accept. "Don't compare yourself to me, we are different by all means. I'm nothing like you."
"Ohh!" I looked at Ethan, his eyes was piercing into my body. If looks could kill, I would have been 6ft into the ground and that would have been better. "You think you are better?"
Penelope wanted to speak but Ethan cut her off, "I can't put up with your nonsense anymore, Tiana. I'm divorcing you right now."
My jaw dropped in bewilderment, my heart began to beat fast and my body weakened at the impact of his words. "What...what are you saying? Ethan?"
"Yes, I'm divorcing you right now." He picked up his phone and was about to dial a number when I grabbed his hand hoping what he said was just a joke.
"Tell me you are joking." I laughed bitterly.
This can't be happening! After donating my blood and losing one of my kids, he is divorcing me?! What the hell?!
He slapped me hard across the face, but I didn't care. "Did you see a smile on my face or do I look like a clown to you? Your mission is complete, the blood I needed, you have donated it and my wife is now alright. No need for a third party anymore."
My hands trembled, and my whole body too. It felt like I had been slapped with a metal. What have I just heard? His wife?!
"What...what do you mean Ethan? Am I not your wife?" I stammered my chest rising and falling with slow and painful breath.
This is a dream right?! How I wish I could wake up and find it all a dream! As tears streamed down my eyes, I realized all my happiness was a facade. How I wish I had left when I found out.
"My wife?" Ethan asked, his voice low and mocking. "So you thought of yourself as my wife? You are just a blood bank for Penelope, not more, not less."
"Why do you think I approached you? Do you know how we met in the hospital and how I pretended to have fallen for you?" He paused. "Do you remember when the nurse mistakenly announced your blood type in the hallway? When I heard of the type, I was sure you're gonna be the perfect blood tank for my wife and so I approached you."
I slumped back on my bed, tears rolling down my cheeks freely and my body shaking as I began to sob. So all my happy marriages are all a play?
All the happy moments I had with my husband were fake. I was just an ordinary blood bank for him, nothing more?
"Get out!" I yelled burying my face in my hands unable to bear the thoughts that were echoing in my mind. "Get the f**k out of my room!"
I yanked the drip out of my hand and threw it at Ethan and Penelope. Ethan managed to dodge the throw in time but Penelope was unlucky as it met her squarely in the face.
"What have you done?!" Ethan yelled at me but I was careless. He raised his hand at me but I caught it midair, my tears still flowing down like an endless ocean.
"Don't you dare, Ethan? You bastard! I cared for you, stood by you, loved you, and gave up everything for you. But how do you repay me? So, Penelope was your wife all along? No wonder you refused to wed me legally." I lamented, my voice pale and slow.
I don't know why but I wasn't as heartbroken as I should be or was it because I already knew their plan?
**Flashback**
Three days ago
I was just returning from the office and decided to check Penelope in the hospital when I heard my husband's voice in the room so I stood to eavesdrop.
"I'm sorry Penelope for marrying another wife, but I needed her as a blood bank for you. And the only way she could have agreed was if I married her."
Penelope sobbed silently
"So you mean I'm weak and dying and you need another woman? That's not fair, Ethan, it's not fair."
"I'm so sorry darling, I will soon divorce her after your health is stable dear. Forgive me."
Her cries stopped immediately. "Is that true? I can't wait to have that b***h out of my matrimonial home."
**End of flashback**
But if I had known I was putting my fetus's life in danger, I would have left. What a bad mother I am! I can never forgive myself for endangering my fetuses.
"You can't divorce her yet baby." Penelope turned her face to me, eyeing me with disgust. "We still need her."
"For what?"
"She has two fetuses inside her that belong to you. They are yours, not hers. She must give them up."
"In your dreams." I retorted before jumping off from my bed, even though I was still hurt but I couldn't bear the thought of them taking my babies. "I can bear everything and can give up everything, but never my babies."
"You are not worthy to care for his babies, you are just my blood bank, not his wife." Penelope hissed, but I could see fear laced in her expression.
I will hurt you, but not yet.
"Penelope, Ethan, I will make you guys regret everything you have ever done to me by blood."
