...Louis-Alphonse d’Beauvais? I sigh with relief as the door creaks open to reveal Louis. I'm glad it's not Ezra, whose face flashed into my mind when I first heard the knocking. Louis is dressed in a plush storm-cloud grey dressing gown worn over dark blue pyjamas. He pushes the door open further and wanders dreamily into my bedroom. I'm surprised to see that he's not carrying any sort of light to see by - no gas lamp, no lit candle in a brass candlestick holder, like everyone else here uses to find their way around at night.
