Kate POV
Kate watched as the girl she had helped raise alongside her own daughter walked away. Lizzie had endured so much hardship.
Hunted by those who seek her, Lizzie was pursued by hunters allied with dark forces—vampires and possibly even a witch. They had concealed everything thoroughly, even from other wolves, to protect the knowledge of Lizzie's true capabilities.
Lizzie was formidable and not to be underestimated. Though she had vanquished many foes, more adversaries seemed to surface.
Regarding Melvin, Kate knew he would pose no further threat to Lizzie. She and Tom had eliminated him for the pain he had caused her. Deserving of his fate, Melvin was a monster who had inflicted deep scars that Lizzie couldn't heal while Pam lay dormant, unable to assist. Protecting Lizzie, her niece, had been paramount. Although Melvin had sought Lizzie, he ultimately paid the price. He would never be found.
Kate glanced up the stairs, hearing Lizzie's soft snores emanating from her room and couldn't help but chuckle. Some things never changed with Lizzie; she must have been exhausted.
When Kate checked the clock, she knew everyone was gathered at the ceremony for the young Alpha, Drake. She believed that Lizzie would eventually come around regarding him. They needed each other, she thought.
Picking up her phone, Kate texted Alicia:
"How is the party?"
"It's okay, most people are drunk," Alicia replied.
A photo arrived on Kate's phone—Alicia and Paolo together. Seeing them happy together made Kate feel a pang of missing Tom.
"Who's all there?" Kate texted back, adding a few heart emojis for the picture.
"Everyone and anyone. How's Lizzie? Did she pass out snoring?"
Kate couldn't help but laugh, knowing that Alicia understood her cousin well.
"Yeah, she's in bed and snoring lol," Kate replied.
Kate admitted to herself that she wished she had attended the party.
"Yeah, I will be on a killing spree," Glam, her Lycan, growled. Glam was furious at Gregory for showing up, as they both had hoped he'd honor the agreement to keep his distance. Though Gregory was Lizzie's father, he had missed so much of her life and didn't even grasp everything she was capable of or had endured.
Another message arrived from Alicia.
Kate received a message lighting up her phone, pulling her attention away from watching over the home.
"Mum, are you okay? Why don't you come join us?" the message read, a question from someone dear.
"No, it's okay. I want to stay here in case Lizzie needs me," she texted back quickly, adding a follow-up explanation, "Besides, Glam might have gone on a rampage, especially after today's events."
For over an hour, Kate sat at the kitchen counter, sipping tea and reading her book since Lizzie had gone to bed. The peaceful silence was interrupted by another message:
"Lol, yeah, true. His mate is here too," referring to Lolita, who was Gregory's mate. Kate had shared some parts of Lucia's story with her, but definitely not all of it, especially the complex parts involving Gregory having to choose between Lolita and Lucia.
Kate typed her response with brisk finality: "Well, if I end up there, they'll have to clean her blood as well, so it's probably safer for me to stay here."
"Yeah, okay," was the quick reply.
Realizing the lateness of the hour, Kate decided it was best to retire for the night. She organized her things onto a tray to take upstairs. But just as she prepared to leave, a blood-curdling scream shattered the calm. It was Lizzie.
Kate's heart raced as she grabbed her phone and dashed to Lizzie's room. Bursting through the door, she found Lizzie lying on her bed, clutching her chest in agony, sweat glistening on her skin.
"Please make it stop," Lizzie cried out in desperation.
Kate rushed to her side, distressed to see Lizzie's eyes glowing an eerie green. "MATE WITH ANOTHER," Pam roared through her.
Trying to help, Kate called Alicia, who picked up swiftly on the second ring, hearing Pam's tormented roar through the line. Lizzie and Pam both manifested their immense power, trapped in this turmoil.
"Alicia, what on earth is happening over there?" Kate demanded, helplessly watching Lizzie writhing and crying out in immense pain on the bed.
"MAKE HIM STOP," Lizzie screamed.
"Paolo just caught Drake with someone else outside," Alicia explained hastily. "What's happening to Lizzie?"
Fury built within Kate at the thought of these careless wolves bringing suffering to her girl.
"Mum, I have you on loudspeaker. Everyone can hear you," Alicia announced, but Lizzie's tormented screams continued to escalate in volume, overpowering the room with their intensity.
"Stop that bastard now; he's causing Lizzie immense pain!" Kate barked urgently, surprised by the sharpness in her voice as she spoke to her own daughter. Witnessing Lizzie in such anguish was unbearable.
"How is that happening?" Alicia asked quickly, seeking clarity.
"I don't know, but he needs to stop immediately. Lizzie is here, screaming in agony," Kate responded.
After a tense moment, Lizzie finally began to calm down. Her eyes opened, still shining an intense green, with Pam fully present and tears streaming down her face. "I HATE MATE," Lizzie declared before turning away.
Lizzie gave Kate her back, choosing to shut her out. The waves of hatred and sorrow emanating from Lizzie were overwhelming, affecting both Kate and Glam, her internal Lycan.
Overcome with emotion, Kate left the room, finding the intensity too much to bear. As she stepped outside Lizzie's bedroom, she could hear Alicia still on the phone. "Mum, are you still there?" Alicia inquired.
Kate took a moment to gather herself before entering her room to speak.
"I'm here, the pain has subsided for now. But if he thinks this is somehow going to win her over..." Kate started to say when another voice joined the conversation.
"Kate, it's me, Lorein. How is she?" asked Luna Lorein, her voice filled with concern.
Hearing from Luna Lorein took Kate by surprise.
"Luna, she's alright now, but she felt everything—everything he was doing with that woman. She experienced it all," Kate explained, a tear escaping her eye. She recognized the signs immediately, having watched her sister suffer similarly when Gregory was entangled with Lolita.
"Kate, how is this even possible?" Luna Lorein pressed further. "How could she feel everything? Could it be related to her powers?"
Kate stared blankly ahead, grateful that her sister had explained the situation to Luna Lorein before the rejection took place.
"How could he do this to her?" Kate asked, still confounded by the event.
After a brief silence, Lorein spoke again. "We discovered that the pack troublemaker spiked his drink. He wasn't aware of his actions. Gregory assaulted him. Now both of them are confined separately to calm down. Gregory nearly tore Drake apart. We also have the pack doctor examining Drake to determine what substance he was given," Lorein sighed. "I'm deeply sorry for what happened, Kate. I need to see her."
