Chapter 11 Enemy in the dark

Drake paused, staring into the distance with a thoughtful expression. "Being an alpha is something I really dislike. There are countless rules and regulations that demand my attention. I often wish I could eliminate most of them, especially the ones that seem utterly unreasonable," he confided in his deep, rich voice. Kendell, eager to show her support and potential as a future Luna, responded, "Once you assume your role as alpha, you could work on changing many of those unnecessary rules. While the elders have considerable influence, if you demonstrate that their concerns are baseless, they'll likely relent." Drake looked at her, impressed. "I hadn't considered that angle before," he admitted, taking a long swig from his beer bottle. The air around them grew quiet for a while, until the bottle unexpectedly slipped from Drake's hand and landed on the ground with a thud. He suddenly began shaking his head, eyes closed, and seemed momentarily lost. Alarmed, Kendell touched his arm gently. "Drake, are you alright?" she asked with concern. When he opened his eyes, they were a deep, midnight black, a clear sign his wolf was at the surface, filled with raw emotion and intensity. He fixed his gaze directly on her, a mix of longing and urgency in his look. Before she knew it, he had pulled Kendell closer, capturing her lips in a passionate kiss. As their kiss deepened, everything else seemed to vanish around them. He moved them both with a commanding strength, every moment filled with a tenderness she had longed for since his return. Eventually, her back met the rough bark of a tree, and he effortlessly lifted her, causing her to wrap her legs around him instinctively. The anticipation and connection between them were palpable. Lost in the moment, they were rudely interrupted by a sudden shout, breaking the intensity. "What the heck are you doing, Drake?" yelled a voice. Turning, Drake's eyes remained dark with determination as he faced the interruption. "I'm with my mate. What's your issue?" he replied defiantly. The intruder, shocked and speechless, retreated back toward the pack house, leaving both Drake and Kendell enveloped in the moment's surprise. Drake met Kendell's gaze as he moved closer to her, claiming her lips in a deep and passionate kiss. She couldn't suppress the soft moan that escaped her lips, feeling overwhelmed by the intensity of the moment. Though the world around them seemed to blur, Kendell sensed movement nearby. Drake paused, pulling away slightly and scanning the surroundings with his darkened eyes, embodying the presence of his wolf. His focus shifted abruptly to the figures approaching them. "She's not your mate!" a voice rang out, the tone unmistakably male. Kendell turned and saw Gregory, his eyes blazing like a wolf on the hunt, filled with accusation and challenge. "She is," Drake asserted firmly. "I choose her as my mate." Kendell felt a surge of triumph; this moment was theirs. "No, she's not yours, Drake. Lizzie is your mate!" Alicia declared, restrained by Paolo, a phone clutched tightly in her hand with frantic voices emanating from it. "Kendell, what have you done to Drake?" Katelyn demanded, her eyes sharp with suspicion as she stood beside her father. "I haven't done anything," Kendell replied calmly. "As Drake said, we are mates." Despite her words, Katelyn seemed unconvinced. Before anyone could react, Gregory lunged at Drake, and the two were soon locked in a fierce struggle that seemed impossible to separate. "Stop it now!" commanded Alpha Rudolf, stepping in to pull the two apart with sheer authority. Gregory was restrained by Paolo, Dave, and several other members of the Midnight Pack. Drake let out a growl, his frustration palpable. Even his father's attempts to calm him were in vain. "Drake," said Luna Lorein softly, gripping his arm and searching his eyes with a mother's concern. As Drake's aura enveloped the gathering, those who were not alphas instinctively showed submission. Kendell, too, inclined her head, acknowledging his power. She glanced over at Gregory, who had also yielded but wore his discontent openly. The tension in the air was tangible, marking the complicated dynamics of loyalty, power, and choice within the Midnight Pack. Kendell turned her gaze towards Alpha Rudolf, her voice echoing with urgency. "Call the pack doctor!" she shouted. "He's under the influence of something!" Katelyn lunged at Kendell, wrapping her hand firmly around Kendell's throat. "What did you give him?" she hissed, her voice tinged with a threatening growl. "I didn't give him anything," Kendell responded, her voice choked and uneven. "Release her!" commanded Drake. "She belongs to me." Freed from his restraints, Gregory charged once more, aiming for Drake. Luna Lorein narrowly sidestepped just in time as Gregory pounced on him again. "You were with another girl; you've hurt my daughter!" Gregory accused, his fist connecting with Drakes's face. More guards rushed in, attempting to restore order. Katelyn's grip on Kendell's throat intensified. "Take her to the cells," she ordered, tossing Kendell towards the incoming guards, who quickly restrained her on both sides. "Enough!" shouted Luna Lorein. "Guards, place them both in separate holding rooms immediately." It took at least six guards to manage each of the men. Gamma Paolo crouched beside the bottle Drake had drunk from, cautiously sniffing its contents. His eyes narrowed suspiciously as he looked towards Kendell. Paolo approached Luna Lorein, murmuring something in her ear, prompting her to fix Kendell with a cold, harsh glare. "Take this one to the cells—I'll deal with her later," she declared, before exiting the scene. The guards flanking Kendell turned her around and began leading her to the cells. "Please, it wasn't me," Kendell implored them, but they remained indifferent, continuing to drag her along. As Kendell glanced back, she noticed Alpha Duncan watching from the window, a smug grin spreading across his face as he exchanged a knowing look with Elder Jonathan. A heavy sense of doom settled over her; she felt like a wolf marked for death. ....... Meanwhile, Alpha Duncan watched with satisfaction as the unsuspecting she-wolf followed his plan without hesitation. She didn't even pause to question the situation. "Did you really have to cause such a spectacle?" Elder Jonathan asked, a hint of amusement in his voice as he looked out the window. "Well, I needed to separate him from her, so I decided to utilize the opportunity we had. He did mention it was for emergencies," Duncan replied. "Do you think the scheme succeeded?" Jonathan inquired. "I'll handle the Lycan, and ensure he gets paired with another mate," Duncan said. "I'll take care of my part. We need to make sure he understands it worked," Jonathan agreed. They continued observing the chaotic scene unfolding outside. "What about the she-wolf?" Jonathan asked him. "Don't worry, I'll take care of her," Duncan responded as he turned to leave. He knew exactly what needed to be done.
