I step inside and close the door and a hand cracks across my face. “Where the f**k have you been b***h?!”
I fall to the floor and look up into his angry blown eyes. His breath smells like alcohol. “I was with Star. I let you know where I was, what's the problem?”
He grabs my hair and his breath wreaks of stale beer. Then he spit in my face as he spoke. “I expected you to be back hours ago to make me something to eat.”
“You were out, you could've eaten then.”
He slaps me across the face. “Why should I waste money when I've got you to cook for me, you stupid f*****g w***e!”
He lets go of my hair and punches me. My hands instinctively go to my stomach. I cradle it, protecting the baby in my stomach from his outburst. I've never seen him like this. He continued to hit me violently I need to get the f**k out of here, but where will I go?
He finally stopped, muttering he's going to get food from somewhere that will cook it for him and he storms out the house slamming the door behind him leaving me crumpled up on the ground. I thought he would never attack me like he had tonight. I thought he wanted this baby, but it seems like he doesn't want either of us. I have to get out of here. I try to move but it's useless. I'm so battered and bruised I can't move and I'm finding it hard to breathe. My vision is blurry and out of focus finally everything around me goes black.
I wake to something bleeping. I look around the sterile room wondering how the hell I got here. The last thing I remember before everything went black was Ethan leaving me lying on the floor after he kicked the s**t out of me. My hand instantly goes to my stomach, hoping that he hasn't done anything to the unborn child in my womb. I may not want this child, but I don't want it to suffer because of his father's abuse of alcohol.
“It's okay Carly I'm here.”
I look up into those dark eyes, the ones I once believed had changed for the better, not the worst. “E…e…e…than?”
He smiles. “It's going to be okay, Calry baby. I was just glad I got home in time or I don't know what I would have done.”
What the f**k is he talking about?
He did this. Is he f*****g delirious?
He leans forward and whispers into my ear. “I’ve told them we had an intruder so stick to the story or ill make sure you don't wake up next time do you understand?”
I nod nervously.
He grins widely, sadistically. Sending shivers down my spine, why on earth did I think he had changed from the guy who kidnapped me at camp and tortured me to the understanding friend I thought I had made? I had worn rose tinted glasses all the times he was nice to me. It was all leading up to this moment. The moment when I would become his pupper and obey his every command, or I would end up in this predicament over and over again until he finally broke me or worse killed me.
The doctor came in and smiled looking at my notes. “Youre extremely lucky that your husband brought you in when he did. You have some broken ribs and bones. We've cleaned and stitched up the wound in the back of your head.”
“Is…is the baby okay?”
He smiles. “The baby is fine, Mrs. Hollingway. We did a scan and the baby is healthy and didn't come into any harm.”
“Thank you.”
He smiles. “My pleasure Miss. Kingsley. The police are here and they want to talk to you about what happened. If that's okay with you.”
I look at Ethan nervously, he nods and I look back at the doctor. “Its fine.”
He nods, excusing himself. Ethan squezzes my hand in a warning not to f**k up.
Two police officers come in and one looks familiar, but I can't quite place him. “Good afternoon, Miss Kingsley, I'm Sergeant McKenna, and this is deputy Reagan. I would like to ask you a couple of questions.”
“Okay.”
“Can we ask what happened last eve?”
“I went to meet my friend Star around six, and I stayed with her until around ten thirty.”
“Then we're did you go?”
“Home.”
“Can she verify this?”
“Yes.”
He nods. “Tell me what happened when you got home.”
I locked the door and I went and got myself a drink.”
“Was Mr Hollingway there?”
“No, I was alone.” I lied.
“Do you recall what happened after?”
“Not, really, it's a little blurry.”
He nods. “Try your best, Miss Kingsley.”
“There was a knock at the door, so I put my drink down thinking Ethan forgot his keys. I opened the door, and I was pushed inside. I fell to the floor and they attacked me.”
“Do you remember what they looked like?”
I shook my head. “No sorry they had a mask on and I passed out.”
He nods, that's it for now, Miss Kingsley, well may need to speak to you again, and you to Mr. Hollingway.”
“Of course anything that will help you find the person who attacked my wife.”
The sergeant nods. “Can I have your friend's contact information?”
“Sure.” I said reeling stars' full name and address. He nods. "We'll be in contact, Miss Kingsley.”
I nod.
“Good day, Miss Kingsley, Mr Hollingway.”
He turns and walks away with the deputy in tow. I let out a breath. Ethan grins and kisses my cheek. “Godo girl, that should keep them busy. Don't piss me off again Carly, you won't like what happens if you piss me off.”
“Is that a threat?”
“Is a promise.”
I swallow hard, this isn't the Ethan I know. This is a monster.
A few days later I'm given the all clear to head home. Ethan has been fussing around me as he decides to take time off work. I have had to rearrange some of my schedule until next week while I get over what Ethan did to me.
Ethan finally returns to work on Monday and there's a knock on the door. I'm not heading back to work for a couple of days. So I'm surprised someone is there. Ethan had some tech shot out in the house so that we could see who was at the door. I open the app and see that Star is prancing up and down outside the door.
I sigh and set the table down and he's for the door and opens it. Star in gulf me in a hug. “f**k Carly what the hell happened? I had the cops around asking questions about last Friday.”
I hug her and cry something I haven't been able to do with Ethan around, watching my every move.
We hug for a while and she pulls away, wiping the tears away. “What did he do?”
And then the water works begin again.
Star drops her arm around me and closes the door. We head over to the sofa and sit down. She stares at me. “What the hell did he do to you, Carly?”
“He was so angry.”
She wipes the rears away then the concealer that is hiding the bruise on my face. “Oh my god Carly please don't tell me that's what I think it is.”
I sniffle.
“What the f**k Carls, he hit you?”
"He was angry.”
“It doesn't mean he should hit you.”
“I wasn't there to make him supper.”
“He has hands, Carls.”
“I talked back to him.”
“You were just sticking up for yourself, Carls.”
“He…he…”
“It's okay, Carls I'm here. He won't hurt you again.”
She pulled me tight into a hug. “You have to tell the police.”
“I can't, he'll do worse.”
“There wasn't an intruder was there?”
I looked at her with sorry ful eyes.
“f**k carly he could've killed you.”
“He will if I tell the truth.”
“Fuck.”
Fuck indeed I had no clue what to do. He had me exactly where he wanted me.
She pulled me into another hug and we stayed like it for a while. “I have to go, Carls, but if you need me to know where I am.”
“Thank you, Star.”
“I'm your best friend, you'd do the same for me. so if you ever need an out I'm your woman.”
I laugh and nod. ”I wish I could, but I can't.”
“I understand. But if you ever need an out.”
“You'll be the first to know.”
She smiles and pulls herself up off the sofa. “Il see you soon Carls.”
“One week.”
“One week.”
I pull myself up and we head to the front door. I open it and we hug. “Just remember you always have an out.”
“I will.”
“Bye, Carls.”
“Bye Star.”
She smiles and waves as she leaves. I return her smile and wave. I close the door and head to the soda and collapse with a sigh relieved to have it all off my chest.
