Chapter 1
The couple and their son waited
patiently at the adoption center. The
the man looked towards his wife, who was
deep in thought but he could see the
the excitement in her eyes along with the
nervousness as she twisted her fingers
on her lap.
He understood her emotions perfectly.
She was and is still the perfect wife but
after giving birth to their wonderful son
her womb continually failed her.
He wasn't complaining, he loved his wife
and their son dearly and was content
with having just two of them but over
the years he could see the light slowly
fading from here yes. During their early
days, she would always speak about
how she was going to fill their home
with kids and it killed her to see that
she couldn't achieve it.
In turn, her unhappiness killed him which
was why when she brought up the idea
of adopting a girl child three years ago,
he jumped at it.
Still, they couldn't get a match. They even
attempted surrogacy and yet it came to
null.
He believed this year was theirs not only
because their business had skyrocketed
overnight, they had a match, I mean
three matches to pick from.
He switched his attention to their little
boy who was blabbering away to the
young fresh out of college looking
receptionist, miss Devon, a blonde curvy
lady, on how he intends to spoil his little
sister with love. You could virtually
see and feel the love and excitement
radiating from him. This girl was already
bringing so much love and joy to his
family and he was grateful.
"I'm sorry, Elizabeth, or Lizzie as she is
fondly called, was just saying goodbye
to her friends and it got a little emotional.
But she's here and ready to go home
with you." Mr's Lawrence, the woman in
charge of the center came in with the
five-year-old the couple had chosen.
"Oh, that is perfectly fine. Hi Lizzie, I'm
your new mummy and that's your new
dad and brother"
The boy looked at his parents
identical smiles in confusion.
"But but, this is not her. She isn't my
sister, you aren't my sister" he exploded
at his parents. He had told them
precisely who among the three girls
he preferred and they had sidelined him to
pick this girl.
The girl's eyes narrowed in response as
his parents tried to calm him down.
"Hey honey, mum and I think Lizzie
would be a great addition to our family, I
know you will love and cherish her like
you were just telling miss Devon, right?"
his dad tried to reason with him but by
this time the boy was already crying profusely.
"That was because I thought it was
Sophie, you promised you were going to
pick her not this girl" he responded.
Lizzie was going out of her mind, this
boy was going to make her lose it and it
most definitely wouldn't be a pretty sight.
Who did this boy think he was to try and
ruin her plans. This was her way out of this hellhole and she didn't know when she'd
get another match. She had not been on
her best behavior, all for this kid
to ruin it just when she was at the edge
of success. No! she was going to set
him right.
"This girl's name is Elizabeth or Lizzie.
Frankly, you can give me any nickname
of your choice, I do not mind but bear in
mind that I will be, no scratch that, I am
your sister whether you like it or not, so
you better put on your big brother shoes
or whatever because starting today, we
are siblings" Lizzie finished with a
menacing glare then turned to the
the shocked couple "I'm ready, can we
leave? Pretty please" she asked, her
expression completely transforming to a starstruck one.
The couple looked from the little girl to
Mrs. Lawrence. Lizzie wasn't having that.
What are you wasting time looking at,
get me out of this hellhole! Now! she
yelled at them.
"Mrs. Lawrence, this behavior wasn't
recorded in the file you gave us. Why
is she behaving like this? I'm sorry but
we can't adopt her. She isn't who we are
looking for." The man took control of the situation.
"I'm sorry, I thought Lizzie had moved
past this and I just felt since she was
commencing a new chapter of her life,
I should forget about it. I'm sorry, I
thought she had changed". Mrs
Lawrence apologized.
"Well, seeing as we can't take her,
can we see Sophie?" the wife finally
reacted. So what if Lizzie was not the
one, Sophie might just turn out to be.
"No! why would you need Sophie? I'm
sorry I acted out but I'm a good girl I
promise, please take me with you."
Lizzie suddenly became agitated.
"No please mummy, you are my new
mummy, right? Please don't leave me
here."
She knelt in front of the couple. No!
I'll grovel if I have to but I
can't spend one more night here.
Daddy, please! Please don't leave me
here, I'm begging you"
The couple sadly shook their heads, the
look on Lizzie's face spelled trouble and
they weren't sure they could deal with her.
"Ugh! I hate you! Why did you pick me
if you were just going to throw me away
like my real parents" then she turned to
the boy and practically exploded in his face.
"It's all your fault! You just want to keep
our parents away from me! You want
them all to yourself. Well, guess what?
I'm not going to let you!" and with that
she launched herself at him, biting,
scratching, and even strangling. It took a
lot of effort from all parties present to
free the young boy from her vicious grip.
A week later, the couple concluded the
adoption of Sophie, the calm beautiful
girl their son had chosen. If they had
just followed his intuitions, this
situation would have gone a whole
lot smoother.
The couple and their son showered lots
of attention on Sophie and the fact that
she had similar features to the couples
made it hard to believe she was adopted.
As the son would always say "what's
meant to be...will be".
