"Goodnight, Mikaela."
My jaw dropped as I saw a bright lighter descending from Ferid's hands in slow motion. As it fell, I could hear my heartbeat pounding loudly. Time had frozen still.
I trailed along my surroundings. Guren who was kind enough to fight along my side even though he didn't even know who we were rescuing. Krul, someone who I have just met, was doing her best to save her only son.
And Mika...
Mika had eyes that were gleaming with fear and despair as he looked at the monster letting go of what would burn everything down into ashes.
Was I going to lose all that?
When I look at Mikaela now, I remember all those happy memories with him. All those times he had made me smile as a child. Mika was my first friend after losing my real parents. Even though I kept pushing him away during the first month I had been in the orphanage, Mika kept coming back to my side... smiling.
He was the one person that gave me hope. He was the one who made me feel that everything was going to be okay despite everything.
I closed my eyes for a moment, and as I did, a memory popped into my head.
"Yuu-chan! Hurry up!" Mika shouted at me. We were running around a grassy field full of dandelions that were a few ways away from the orphanage. There were rarely any cars and people passing by the area, so it was quite peaceful. Nobody else knew about it aside from Mika and I. It was our little hiding spot, our own world.
"Gah! Will you wait!?" I desperately chased Mika down, barely catching my breath in the process.
He laughed at the expression I made, sitting down on the green grass. As he sat down, a few puffs of dandelions flew off in the air. The puffs flew on my face, making me grumble like a cranky old lady as I sat beside Mika.
I flickered the puffs off of me frantically, making Mika chuckle. "Yuu-chan! You know, the world seems so big if we lie down on the grass."
"Hm?" I stopped flicking the puffs and looked at Mika, "So?"
He crossed his arms, "So we should lie down and look at the sky!"
"Don't wanna," I said.
"Suit yourself."
Rolling his eyes, he let his hands rest on the ground and slowly leaned back to lie down on the ground. Mika stared at the big blue blanket above. I looked at them as well in curiosity. There were so many clouds that resembled cotton candy.
In those days, all I could wonder was if that moment would last. If things could go on the way they would for the next years.
The grass beside me rustled gently as I lied down. The sky was so big that somehow, I felt so small to the world around me. Like I was nothing but a tiny spec found in this world.
But... it wouldn't really matter as long as Mika was with me. Even if I was nothing worthwhile, just being with Mika was more than amazing. It was incredible... and if I get to be with him my whole life, then I'd probably feel a lot bigger than the world itself.
"Mika..."
"Hm?"
A sudden breeze came, making the grass dance and the dandelions shedding its hair. Puffs spun around in the air around us. I had suddenly held Mika hand, making him look at it.
"Huh?" He reacted.
"We..." I began. His eyes changed sight to my face, finally realizing that my green orbs were staring at him with hope. Mika gaped in silence.
Mika had always been by my side, keeping my smile intact.
All I saw was Mika gazing at me as dandelions were floating above us.
"We'll always be together, right Mika?" I asked innocently.
Mika had no words to say for my question. His eyes were shining so brightly at me as I saw his lips slightly trembling. I didn't know what was on his mind, but I knew Mika felt the same as I did... that he didn't want us to go our separate ways.
His eyes averted from me, slightly coughing in the process.
"O-of course... I can't leave you all by yourself." He stuttered, "Who else is going to put up with your antics?"
Mika had promised me that we would be together no matter what.
And even though I had not recognized him at first when I was in the hospital, Mika had still been there for me. Even without the memories, Mika cared for me deep inside his heart.
Mika...
You've loved me for more than enough since the day we met. I don't know why or how you can even put up without as I, who practically didn't appreciate your efforts 'til now. You deserve so much more than that.
Mika... if only I had realized sooner that I love you not only because you are my family...
But because you were you.
I love you, Mika, and I don't ever want to lose you again.
I screamed at the top of my lungs as time was thawing back again, "RUN! He's going to set the place into flames!"
Frantically, I grabbed on to Mika's wrist, running away from Ferid. Everyone else had probably heard my shout because they had begun running away as well.
Tack
The lighter chimed as it fell on the oily ground. Just as it gently tapped on the floor, a bright yellow-orange hue colored the atmosphere. Flames sprung out from the ground, slowly spreading out around the building.
I couldn't breathe properly, smoke was already developing as the fire growled stronger. But it didn't stop me, my feet were practically fighting towards freedom. Mika was doing the same as he tried keeping up with my pace.
As we ran, I saw Guren and Krul in front of us, desperately trying to escape as well.
"Come on! Let's hurry to the car!" Krul yelled at us as the two of them finally got out before us.
Mika and I were only a few ways from the exit.
There it was...
Freedom.
"Yuu-chan!" I heard Mika cry out just when we were about to get out of the building.
We both halted by the exit when I realized, Ferid had grabbed on to Mika's leg with a dark smile.
"Not this time... I'm taking you to hell with me." Ferid grinned.
Tears developed in Mika's eyes as they trailed from Ferid to me. My throat dried as I remembered the same look he gave me ten years ago.
"Yuu..." a tear fell from Mika's sapphire eyes,
"...we're family, okay?"
The same image of Mika from ten years ago came. The past and the present flashed before my eyes over and over that it made my head hurt.
Everything lost its sound as I stared at Mika. His face had become as pale as a ghost, tears withdrew from his irises, and he gave a smile, forced, that was gentle.
It was a look that made my heart ache... an expression that showed me he had lost all his hopes.
"Now... run and live." He whispered.
Mika had let go of my hand, separating us from one another.
No...
No...
Not again...
I bit my lip tightly. Mika, didn't we promise each other we'd be together no matter what?
"I am not losing you again!" I screamed loudly.
Gathering all of my strength, I quickly grabbed Mika's hand, pulling him from Ferid's grasps.
The impact of pulling Mika so strongly caused us both to stumbled backward and rolling out of the building.
Our eyes were met by the open sky as we both lie on the ground. I took a deep breath, finally taking in the air instead of smoke.
Beside me was Mika with eyes wide open. Tears were falling down the side of Mika's face. He was still crying...
But he's alive, and that's what mattered.
"Hurry up, you two!!" Guren shouted from a near distance. I sat up, alerted by Guren's voice. Standing, I pulled Mika up as well, holding his hand as I walked us to the car.
We both sat down in the back seat, Guren and Krul on the ones in front. As we shut the car's door, Guren made no wait and drove off as far as we could away from the scene.
During the drive, nobody spoke. Mika of all, seemed like he was lost in a state of confusion. His tears had finally ceased but I could clearly see them dried up on his cheeks. His eyes were all red and puffy as well.
My eyes trailed at Mika's figure. He had wounds all over his body, and I could see some blood on his shirt. His face was really red and had dirt on it.
I clenched my fist tightly. Ferid... how could you put Mika go through such torment?
It must have been hard on him. After all, getting kidnapped and tortured by someone must have been a very scary and confusing situation. To make things worse, Mika doesn't even remember who Ferid is...
...or me for that matter.
Slowly, I released my fist and took a deep breath. At least Mika is here with me again, and he's safe...
I extended my arm to Mika's back, touching his shoulder and pulling him towards me. Our heads and shoulders touched as we were now very close to one another.
"Yuu-chan..." Mika breathed.
My eyes slightly grew wide. I still wasn't used to Mika saying that nickname. Well, at least only because I know he doesn't remember the past...
I gave a small chuckle, "You're calling me Yuu-chan again, Mr. Nurse?"
Mika sniffled, his voice trembled as he spoke, "Yeah... it's because... I'm finally back with Yuu- chan after all these years of being away from each other..."
My hand dropped from Mika's shoulder as my eyes went wide open. I looked at Mika, "What...?"
Our eyes were parallel to one another but I could clearly see the smile on his face, "Yuu-chan... I'm home."
Water began to form in my eyes. Mika... remembers me...?
I couldn't believe it. After everything that's happened... Mika finally....he...
No words could come out of my lips. I was too dumbfounded by what was going on. But... it felt like a heavyweight had gone off of my shoulders. That a huge burden had been lifted from me.
Mika wrapped his arms around me, his chin resting at my shoulder and I the same. My trembling hands slowly held on to the back of Mika's shirt as tears went down from my eyes.
"Yuu-chan..." I hear a gentle chuckle from Mika, "Are you crying?"
I held him tighter, not wanting to ever let go.
"I-idiot... I haven't seen you in ten years! How can I not cry?" I whine.
Mika's hand caressed my back gently, making me feel at ease. "I know... but Yuu-chan is happy, right? Because... I am."
I try my best to let out a laugh to show him I was beyond happy to see him again.
"Yeah... I'm so happy that I could kiss you right now." I joked.
I heard him gasp slightly, his hand stopping its movements.
Oh crap. I hadn't realized what I had said. I remembered the time Mika and I had actually kissed when we were alone at his place. There was also the time he had almost kissed me in the hospital.
And.... and... Mika's feelings... I hadn't given it too much thought back then. Besides being considered family, could Mika had felt something else too? And my feelings...
After everything that's going on, these thoughts just escape my mind! I-I can't be blamed... kinda.
"OKAY! Save that sweet talk later when we're not around, alright?"
Guren suddenly announced, making Mika and I jerk, and us letting go of one another. Krul was giggling without saying a word, probably enjoying what she was hearing.
My cheeks grew a bright red as I lay my palm on my face, "S-sorry."
Krul then faced us at the back with a smile, "Let's take care of your wounds and eat first, okay Mika? I haven't eaten since I was on a plane hours ago."
Mika slowly nodded his head, "Alright."
Krul's hand reach to her lips as she giggled once more, making me blush as I was expecting something embarrassing to come out, "After that, you're free to do whatever lovey-dovey stuff you want."
Both Mika and I coughed hard as we felt the car suddenly taking a short pause before running smoothly again. Guren had coughed as well.
I knew she was going to say something like that!
"Mother, please!" Mika whined in a soft voice as he planted his palm on his forehead.
Krul giggled for one last time before facing front once again.
"What the hell..." I grumbled, still feeling embarrassed by Krul's teasing. She must be having the time of her life.
Then I suddenly felt something touch my hand, making me look at it. Mika's hand had crawled towards mine, our palms touching each other and fingers entwining securely.
My heart raced but in a good way. I couldn't help but smile as I held his hand intact.
Mika... we're finally together again.
