“Go, Haji!” I heard the loud cheering of girls in front of me. I was busy eating my potato chips while watching Haji and his playmates running and struggling at their opponents.
Haji looked at me and he smiled. He kicked the soccer ball and it hit the net. Goal! I stood up and cheered for him. I did not care about the student girls saying things behind my back. I need to support my best friend.
I saw Kai standing from a short distance. I covered my face with my potato chips and I felt his presence coming to me. I smelled his favorite perfume that made me look at him.
“What are you doing here?” he asked seriously.
“I am supporting Haji for this game.” I shouted at him and cheered Haji when the soccer ball hit the net again. Kai looked pissed when I was happy for Haji. I grabbed his arm and I smiled at him.
“Go, Haji!” I shouted at the top of my lungs. Haji winked at me and he made a heart shaped using his hands. Kai looked at my happy face and I ignored him.
“Is she crazy?” I heard him hissed.
“Look at him. He’s the best player in their team!” I happily exclaimed. I giggled and squeezed Kai’s arm.
I was really happy seeing Haji playing again. He was sporty when we were kids. His team was always the reigning champion in intramurals and in international. I was proud of him.
Kai looked gloomy as he removed my hand on his arms and he went away. He was getting jealous, I think.
“Oops. Sorry, I didn’t mean it,” a student girl sincerely said to me. She accidentally spilled her drinks on my skirt.
“It’s okay.” I said calmly. I rushed to the rest room and wrung my skirt. It smelled pineapple juice and I felt sticky. I really need to change in jogging pants.
“Where are you going?” a student girl said behind my back and I looked at them. It was Adriana and Arah again.
“Do you think you can escape on us?” Arah said fiercely. She pushed me to the sink. What should I do?
“You should leave this university before you get killed here,” Adriana said, poking my chest.
“No, I should not leave this university.” I smiled confidently. “If you don’t want trouble, the two of you must better to drop.” I added and they stopped me before I walked out.
“We”ll never let you escape.” They looked serious and they grabbed my arms and pushed me to the ground.
“Ouch!”
I stared at them furiously and I got up. I would make their bones fractured.
Arah turned the faucet on and Adriana pushed me to the sink. They planned to drown me to the sink? They think that I was easy to kill? They were wrong. I would let them hurt me and when they reached their limit, I need to punish them. I was tapping the sink many times while they were pushing me hard in the sink full of water.
“This is better for you!” Arah screamed.
“Don’t ever dare to get in touch with Kai,” Adriana sarcastically said.
I heard a scream from a short distance. May be, someone peeked at us here. I need help. I would not let myself get suspended because of these two shrimps.
Arah pulled my hair while I was catching my breath. I started to remove her hands on my hair and I kicked her legs. She was hurt and made me free from her. Adriana pushed me to the sink again and I kicked her hard.
Adriana was tough, I thought, because she still manged my kick. She pushed me to the ground and she started to kick my back.
“Stop this!” someone shouted at us. I saw a teacher with a stick and he invited us to the gym. He made us to kneel and put our arms above our head.
“Who made this commotion?” he asked.
“She made it,” the two shrimp heads said. So, they were pointing at me again this time? It seemed like they never learned a lesson from their leader, Tamara.
“How could you explain to me that she made it? Her wet hair was a mess. I saw you, Ms. Adriana kicking this girl. Do you think that you can fool me?” he asked fiercely. He laughed a little and he sat in front of the two shrimp heads.
“She really made it. She pushed us to the ground and – “ Arah’s words were cut when he s*****d her side with his stick.
“If you do this again, you’ll get punished.” he warned us.
“But – “ Adriana’s words were cut too.
“No buts. I heard a lot from your group and it was awful to tell that you don’t deserve this elite school,” he said frankly.
“Are you okay, Miss Sae?” he asked me calmly.
“No, sir,” I answered honestly. My back ached when I moved a little.
“You should go to the clinic and get some rest there,” he commanded.
“Yes, sir. Thank you.” I smiled at him.
I started to get up but I felt like having a broken rib at my back. A hand came in front of me. I looked at whose hand was. He helped me to stand up and he put his jacket on my waist and he carried me.
“What a-are you doing?” I stuttered and I saw the two shrimp heads staring at me badly. He carried me to the clinic. He gave me chocolate cookies and a bottled water. He was not saying a word while he was scrolling his cellphone.
“What made you decide to carry me in front of the students?” I asked curiously. His brows met and he looked at me seriously. I felt the cold wind on my face.
“Nothing,” he coldly said. “Just take care of yourself.”
I smiled secretly while he was not looking at me. I ate the chocolate cookies and I thought of how he carried me. He looked like a prince at that moment.
“What are you thinking?” he asked and his face went close to me.
My smile disappeared when I saw his calm eyes looking at me. I pushed him a little and I shook my head. I felt my back aching and I involuntarily opened my mouth.
He was quick to pull me, facing my back. He slowly touched my back and he hit the aching part.
“It is a bruised part. I think this would make you feel better,” he whispered while putting ice cubes in an ice pack. He gently put it on my back and I felt better after fifteen minutes.
The school nurse said that I did not have a broken rib. Thank God!
“Next time, you should be careful. What if there was no person who called for help?” he seriously said but I think he was hiding his anger. The dinner that he ordered from a fast food arrived at exactly 6:15pm. He did not let me cook and I think he was becoming thoughtful. “What’s with your grin?”
“I am happy for the fried chicken and baked mac. I was craving for it. Let’s eat.” I lied and I showed him my smile again.
When I was finished having my quick shower, I laid on my bed. I felt sleepy when he carried me on his bed. I felt comfortable when he caressed my hair until I fell asleep.
I slowly opened my eyes when I saw a light from the window. Kai was standing there and he was like thinking something. I stretched for awhile and got up out of the bed. I prepared for my things and he went to the living room.
“Let’s eat.” He invited me to have a breakfast with him.
“Did you prepare this?” I asked smiling and I took a small bit of omelette. “Delicious,” I whispered.
“Hurry. We’re getting late,” he seriously said. I finished my food quickly and we prepared to go to school.
“She’s with Kai again,” a student girl said.
“That b***h is really annoying,” another student whispered.
“Everyone, please listen. Don’t even try to touch my girl friend or else I will do something that will make you regret,” Kai announced at the crowd of students. He was holding my hand. The students remained silent as we walked away from them. He took me to my room and let go of my hand.
“You don’t have to do it,” I whispered to his ear and he stared at me seriously.
“I need to do it. Just take care of yourself. Stupid.” He was emotionless and he left me in front of the room.
“What happened?” Haji asked curiously. He took a sip on his milk and smiled at me.
“Nothing.” I answered calmly and I went to my seat.
“He’s learning to take care of you.” He sat opposite to me. “I think he would be a good husband for you.” he added and he drank all of his milk.
A good husband? How would he be a good husband? He was playing tricks on me. We already decided that I should not fall in love with him.
“May be.” I hesitated.
The bell rang and it was our lunch break. Haji and I went to the cafeteria to buy some foods and drinks. I was stunned when Kai sat beside me. The students were looking at us. They were gossiping again at my back. What was he doing here?
The sound of silence came between the three of us.
“How are you, Kai?” Haji broke the silence.
“I’m fine.” Kai answered seriously.
“What made you to join us?” he questioned. Haji looked like he was interrogating Kai. I wish that I could disappear. What if he was hot headed towards Haji? What would I do?
“Nothing.”
Nothing? Unbelievable. He was just trying to prove something I did not know. He was trying to get close to us.
