Prologue
Wearing a bachelor's uniform, today is the day I graduate from university. I am about to leave the campus, but I still have to finish the graduation ceremony. Glancing around, I couldn’t help but notice the little groups of people lurking around taking pictures with their friends and family, and I couldn’t help but feel jealous. I kept looking at my phone and at the school gate hoping to get a glance of the two most important people in my life – my dad and boyfriend of 3 long years. Well, it’s not that long because I love him. I kept on reminiscing about the times we have spent together and a smile crept up the curves of my lips. “Maddie, come over here. Let’s take a picture together.” I heard my classmates standing behind call out to me as they pull me out of my thoughts. I sigh and thought maybe there is a delay on the way that’s why they are running late. I braced and comforted myself, put up a smile, and walked towards my classmates.
Well, this is the last ceremony before I graduate, I must as well enjoy it. After today, we all will be released into society. I will have to adapt to my new life, I will need to get a steady paying job, ah yes, I may also be married soon, I can’t wait to build a family with my love Mason, we will have lots of babies. Maddie kept on thinking as she remembered the beautiful diamond ring, she found hidden safely in the cupboard in mason’s residence a few months back. The mere thought of it, made Maddie’s lips curve up in a sweet and homely smile little did she know that her once beautiful life, will come down crashing before her very eyes.
Mason and she have been each other’s first love and have been in a relationship full of bliss for three years now. Whenever they were together, the atmosphere was always serene, and they rarely had couple fights. Mason was 3 years older than her; he was born in the countryside and came to Yorkshire Dales after college. He was her immediate senior. When he was about to graduate, they both fell in love and started dating. His parents are honest farmers. Due to the difficult life of his parents, he matured earlier than normal children would. He is serious and works hard because he knows he must succeed. It was also because of his seriousness and hard work that moved Maddie to fall in love with him.
Maddie is the flower of her family, with fair and milky skin, tall stature, big emerald green eyes that depicts the riches of the sss, and two dimples on her face when she smiles. She has a lot of outstanding suitors chasing after her, coupled with her family who was known to be good people, she was a goddess in the eyes of her suitors. Although Mason looks handsome, his family is really not very reputable. Many people are surprised by Maddie's choice. After all, it is not a problem for her to find someone more handsome than Mason. But Maddie doesn't care about this. What she values are Mason's character and ability. She believes that he will succeed sooner or later.
"Why is your handsome boyfriend Mason not here yet?" Lucy asked me while looking around for Mason. Lucy is my roommate and best friend, and the relationship between us has always been very good.
"Maybe something is going on at the company." I said making an excuse for Mason.
"No matter how busy He is, He should have made time to come over to attend your graduation ceremony!" Lucy just doesn't like Mason very much. When Maddie agreed to date Mason, Lucy had strongly opposed it, but because Maddie insisted, She didn't have much to say.
"He will come, just a little later." I had to say this because I was convinced that he will come. Last night when we were on the phone, Mason had said that He has something important to tell me today. I have been wondering what could it be. What about the diamond ring? If Mason wanted me to marry him now, I would be so willing.
But Maddie couldn’t help but feel disappointed. The number of times that Mason had left her hanging in the past six months has risen sharply, and she has strong doubts that he will come today.
"Maddie." Mason shouted as he walked through the crowd and came to me. Today, he wore a formal suit which is highly unlikely of him. His expression was a bit solemn, unlike the bright beaming sunshine smiles he always showered me with in the past.
"You finally made it." I happily stepped forward and took his hand, not at all upset at his lateness.
"I'm going to take pictures with the other of our classmates." Lucy said as she walked away. Her distaste for Mason’s lateness and attitude showing on her face.
After Lucy left, Mason looked at Maddie. Her gentle smile made him feel a strong sense of guilt. He turned his head and deliberately refused to look at her and said, "Maddie, I have something to tell you. Let's find a quiet place and talk." He knew that it would be horrible to say those things to her today especially as it’s supposed to be a day of joy for her, but he had no choice but to rush to the hotel later, where Mia was holding her graduation party, Mia’s father who is the chairman of the Mo Group, had said to him that Today he would introduce him to everyone as his future son-in-law. They came to a secluded corner of the campus, and Maddie looked at her boyfriend expectantly.
"Maddie, let's... break up." Mason said with great difficulty and a little pain in his voice.
He really does love Maddie, her innocent smile, her tenderness and thoughtfulness are part of the things he loves dearly about her, but at the same time he longs for success. Maddie’s father is a civil servant, and her mother had passed away a few years ago. She could not help his career at all. Unlike Mia, she is the daughter of a wealthy business tycoon, and marrying her can save him 30 years of hard work and struggling. Don’t say he is impractical, because he knows how cruel this society is and how difficult it is to get a foothold in Yorkshire Dale.
"What...what did you just say?" Maddie looked at her boyfriend in astonishment. She wondered if she had heard it wrong. He said he wanted to break up? why is that?
"Let's break up." I have already spoken, and the next step is not as difficult as I thought.
"Why... why?" Haven't we been good before? Why did he break up with me suddenly? We were neither quarrelsome nor disturbed, Did I do something wrong? Maddie couldn't stop thinking of why he became like this all of a sudden.
"I'm getting married to the daughter of the Mo Group. She can help me succeed." Mason looked at her with guilt on his face, "I'm sorry, Maddie."
"What about our three-year relationship? What about the love we’ve shared?" Jasmine's face was pale. How could he treat her like this? Is the love he always professed to her before fake?
Mason did not dare to look at her, He turned his face and said in pain, "I love you, but I want to succeed. You should know that in the real world, love cannot survive. If there is no bread, all the so-called love will not be there. The chai, rice, oil, and salt are slowly rubbed away."
Maddie covered her mouth and shook her head in disbelief. This current Mason is so different from the Mason I had known before. She couldn't believe that they were the same person.
At this moment, Mason's cell phone rang, and it was Mia who called. Mason looked at Maddie with some embarrassment, and finally walked to the side and picked up the phone: "Hey Mia, I'll be with you right away... OK, I see, I will bring your favorite champagne rose to the pass away time... Ok, See you later." His voice is very gentle. Maddie remembered that he always used this tone to call her before. At that time, she thought it was the happiest thing to talk to him on the phone, but now he uses this voice to talk to another woman, she thought it was ironic.
Mason turned to meet Maddie's big and sad eyes. He has unspeakable guilt, but he has no more time to comfort her now, "I'm sorry, I have something to do, l'll go first." He turned around without reluctance and left.
Maddie looked at his hurriedly retreating back, and tears could not help falling off her delicate face. It turns out that his ring was prepared for another woman. It turns out that whilst he said that he was busy with work, he was only busy with another woman. It turned out that he said that he had something to tell her not to propose to her, but to break up...
Maddie was alone and silently kept crying. In sadness and pain, the phone rang at this time, and she was not in the mood to answer it, but looking at the phone call came from her father, she didn't want him to worry about her, maybe her father had already arrived at school but couldn't find her.
Wiping the tears off her face, inhaling her nose, and taking a deep breath, she tried to relax herself as much as possible, so as to prevent her father from hearing the strangeness in her voice. After finishing the preparations, Jasmine pressed the answer button and said sweetly: "Dad, where are you? Are you lost? I'll find you." She tried to make herself sound normal.
"I'm sorry, I'm not your father. Your father had a car accident and is in the hospital now." Maddie was terribly horrified. She inquired the name of the hospital and hurried to see her father. When she arrived at the hospital, the doctor announced that her father was dead. She could not endure such a shock and fainted on the spot. When she woke up again, she saw two men in their sixties standing in front of her bed, and a young man who looked about thirty years old standing by the window. They told her that her father was hit by them. It was a red light at the time. But because he was trying to catch her at the graduation ceremony, her father ran through the red light on his old bicycle and collided with their car.
After listening, Maddie didn't say a word, didn't cry, she was very calm and abnormal, and it took a long time before she requested to see her father.
When she opened the sheet covering her father and saw that there was no blood and her father was gone, Maddie broke down in tears. This was her only relative. She knew that the other party could not be blamed for this. After all, the one running the red light was the one who was at fault. She blamed herself. If it weren't for attending her graduation ceremony, her father's death wouldn't be the case. She cried bitterly, and she cried until her voice became dumb, and she didn't stop, and finally she was hugged into a wide and warm embrace, and a voice told her that everything would be fine.
In the next few days, Maddie was immersed in her own pain. The funeral of her father was also organized by the men in the hospital that day. It was done very graciously. The new elegans were piled up in a room, and people she knew not. Many people came, but Maddie didn't say a word, but just sat silently and wept.
After the funeral, Maddie kept herself locked up at home and didn't go anywhere. Lucy came over to accompany her for a few days, and then her parents forced her to go back to her hometown. She never saw Mason since that day. She heard that within a few days after she graduated, he married the woman who would save him 30 years of struggling.
After some days, the owner of the car came to her home again. He was a very kind old man. He said that he would take care of her in the future. After all, they were responsible for her misfortune. Maddie only listened and didn't speak. Now she has nothing. She had thought she would be happy days ago, but she was all shattered one by one. If It had only been her boyfriend's betrayal she would have been stronger, she could survive it, but now her only relative had departed leaving her world to collapse all at once.
"If you want, you can marry my son, we can give you a home, I will definitely treat you like my own daughter, and you can call me father in the future." The old man said kindly.
Home, what a beautiful word, and looking at the kindness of the old man, Maddie seemed to have seen her father. She was willing to believe what he said. The home is so deserted now. She is the only one around. She is afraid of such loneliness.
"Okay." Maddie nodded and agreed to his proposal.
The old man nodded with a smile, satisfied.
The wedding was held a week later. The groom did not want to make the marriage public. Their wedding was very low-key and secret, and only a few of the man’s family knew about it. Maddie didn't care, she only needs a place called home, and nothing else matters.
