Monday morning came as the household of the O'blenns were busy with preparations for the tea party. The bright sun passed through the window, beaming on Kendra's eyes that made her open them. She turned around to avoid it then quickly realized something that made her sit up.
Blythe is coming over today.
She thought as she blushed with excitement. She ran through the hallways that made Kenny wake up from next door.
"Kendra, can you stop running around so early in the morning?" Kenny said as he yawned with a messy hair.
"Blythe is arriving soon!" Kendra said looking at him with a big smile. Kenny jolted and quickly closed his door.
"Wait. wait. You invited her to our house!?"
"Ahuh. I asked mom and dad about it already." Kendra replied without much thought to what her brother said.
Kenny hurried to their parents' bedroom and opened their door to wake them up.
"Mom! Dad!" He yelled.
"Ken, it's too early for your complains. Can't you do it later?" His dad replied with a groan.
"Just.. Can't you two wake up already? Please?" Kenny begged.
"Alright, honey, what is it?" His mom said, sitting up the bed.
"Kendra. invited. someone. from. school. Are you two okay with that!?"
"Well, yeah, dear. It's nice to see your sister finally interacting with people. And she even invited her at that." His mom replied with a yawn.
"But you don't even know her!"
"Ken Benjamin." His dad said with a deep tone, obviously pissed off.
Kenny walked out of the room without saying a word as his father went back to sleep.
I can't just let her wreck my family. That demon girl.. at first I was really interested in her. Maybe because she was the first one to become friends with Kendra.. or maybe because she was the first to not fawn over me when she saw me. And the look she has when she's serious.. damn. Wait. What am I thinking!? She's a demon! Ugh.. I gotta warn my sister before...
Kenny stopped on his track as he noticed his twin sister twirling with joy for the first time in days.
And yet it's so hard to ruin it for her. I have never seen her so excited because of someone. Kendra has always been so cold towards everyone. I admit, I haven't been the best brother but she has always been the best sister. I can't just rush to her and say ' hey sis, you know your bestfriend? she's actually a demon and I think you should stay away from her.' I just gotta find a way to separate her from Blythe somehow.
Then it struck Kenny. An idea that crossed his mind. He rushed to get ready for the party as Blythe has just rung the doorbell. Kendra hurried to the front door where Blythe was greeted by one of their maids. Kendra rushed to hug Blythe who hugged her back.
"It felt like it's been so long.." Kendra said.
"I really missed you, Kendra!" Blythe smiled widely that it made Kendra smile back.
The two proceeded to the guest room where Blythe will be staying. She looked awe as she roamed around the room.
"Wow. It's so beautiful. Those artistic glass window panes. and the walls.."
"My parents are skilled with artistic magic that allowed them to craft those. They've been interior designers for the palace their whole life." Kendra explained.
"That's so cool!"
"Well, this is the only room that doesn't feel like the ghost of Vonn Masque... Fear not my soul-"
"for I have returned."
"Not to harm the good,"
"But to seek my treasure"
"on the night of Elwood."
They finished each others sentences.
"You've read The Haunting of Masque, too??" Kendra said giggling.
"Only the first book since it was the only one available back home."
"I see.." Kendra thought seriously and had something planned.
"Well, you wanna go prepare our clothes? I have a few clothes prepared for the both of us in the wardrobe."
"Yeah, let's do that!"
"Ah, but I gotta go make a few calls to a few friends. I remembered I forgot to invite a few more people over. I already picked my dress so, can you change clothes alone?" Kendra pleased.
"Sure, no problem!"
"Thanks for coming, Blythe." Kendra said, surprising Blythe with a hug but eventually hugged back.
Kendra exited the room, leaving Blythe alone to pick a dress.
Alrighty, where do we start? This is my first time attending a tea party so I should really choose wisely on what to wear.
Blythe started rumaging through the wardrobe. It had tons of shiny elegant dresses. Unlike her wardrobe back in the underworld, it was glittering with colors and at least in 10 shades each.
"Hey." A voice from her back called out. It was Kenny.
"It's been a long time, Kenny!" Blythe said with a big smile. Kenny was surprised at how happy she was to see him after the night at the villa. Then he remembered, her memories were stolen.
"Uh, y-you want help?" Kenny asked her.
"Well, I can't pick between ash gray and royal blue." Blythe said holding two dresses for Kenny to look at.
"Hmm... Both don't really suit you." Kenny said, making Blythe look at the dresses again.
"You know what will?" Kenny said as he approached a gown in pearl white with real pearl beads attached to it.
"This. What do you think?"
"Yeah, it's good. But I still prefer the ash gray one."
"C'mon. It will look really good on you." Kenny insisted.
"Yeah, but-"
"Kendra would've preferred if you wore this." Kenny added making Blythe speechless.
Jackpot.
He thought then held the dress and pulled Blythe to a mirror. He placed the dress in front of her to make her see what it will look like.
"Do it for her."
Blythe looked at herself with the dress that Kendra would have liked it.
--
The party started as the guests gradually increased. Kendra and her parents greeted everyone who came but Kendra kept looking around where Blythe is.
"Ma, Pa, I'll be back. I'm gonna go look for my friend now."
"Okay, sweetie. Just don't forget to smile and-"
"Be courteous to others. I know, I know.I gotta go." She told then as she proceeded to look for Blythe.
Kendra looked high and low for her until finally, she found her. She raised her hand up and started to form a smile but it immediately faded when she saw her brother with her and the dress she wore. Blythe was still having a conversation with Kenny but immediately turned her attention to Kendra when she saw her. Blythe couldn't make out the face Kendra showed at that time.
"Hey, Kendra!"
Blythe hugged Kendra but Kendra could barely hold her.
"We were just talking about Blythe's pond in her home town. The ducks that attacked her hair ruined it so much, she had to go bald for a year! hahahahahaha"
"Shut up." Blythe said jokingly.
"W-wow.. you never told me that before." Kendra faked a laugh.
"Do you wanna walk around and meet a few people?" Kendra asked Blythe.
"I'd love to!"
"Can I come with?" Kenny inserted.
"I-"
"Sure! Right, Kendra?" Blythe inserted before Kendra could speak.
"Yeah.."
The three of them started to meet a few people at the party. The entire time, Kenny kept messing with Blythe. Trying to catch her attention and at the same time making sure Kendra notices. At the middle of walking around the party, Kendra stood and stopped walking.
"I don't think I can carry on. You guys go ahead."
"Why? Are you okay?" Blythe asked in concern.
"um.. I just don't feel very well right now."
"You should have said so sooner! Do you want me to come with you?" Blythe said holding Kendra's shoulder.
"It's fine! hahaha I think I'll go get the maids to help me out."
"But-"
"I said it's fine, Blythe." Kendra said, glaring at Blythe before leaving them. Blythe just stared at Kendra as she walked away, feeling sad and somewhat guilty for something she doesn't know she did.
--
Kendra sat at the shade of the tree in a pond near their house. She could hear the people's chatter from the party and the laughs of some familoar people keep echoing in her head. She covered her ears, hoping for the noises in her head to stop.
"Sis.." A voice called out from beside her. It was Kenny.
"I know, I know. I shouldn't be friends with her! You always do those things to show me you don't want that particular person to be near me. The pearl dress.. the party.. you always give those signals away when you know that I shouldn't be friends with them. And I'm very thankful, I am! It's saved me a lot of trouble when picking friends.. and they turn out true all of the time.." Kendra started to cry, remembering the friends she made that turned out to be just after her brother.
"Sorry, Kenny wants me to play with him. Maybe later?"
"Sorry, I have a piano recital with Kenny. Maybe later?"
"Sorry! Kenny has a game this afternoon! Maybe later?"
"Look, Kendra! Kenny got me a pearl white dress! Isn't it so cute!?"
Those words kept echoing in Kendra's head.
"I-I don't know why you think Blythe is like them.. but they're not like her at all. Not one bit. Every word and every smile Blythe shows me.. it's really from her heart..Even when you visited the library constantly before.. I didn't feel left out because Blythe always always acknowledged my presence. For the first time, I'm not Kenny's sister. For the first time, I' m Kendra." Kendra continued to cry in front of her brother. Kenny sat beside her and pat her back.
"I know. She's different from the others." Kenny said. Kendra stopped to look at him with confusion.
"But why!? Why were you giving out the same signs you give when I had fake friends?!"
Kenny sighed and removed his hand from Kendra's back.
"What if Blythe was someone different from us? What if she is someone that is an enemy to us? What if she was a demon?"
"I don't care! demon or not, Blythe is Blythe! She is the same Blythe that I read books with, drank tea with, and the same Blythe that isn't bothered by the weakness I have."
Kenny was surprised. Not at the fact that her sister was defending someone. Or that she had a point He was surprised that her sister realized it first than he did. It was always him who realizes everything first. But in that moment, Kendra was more mature than he ever was.
Kenny smiled at Kendra who looked more confused than ever.
"Y-you're creeping me out.." Kendra said, making Kenny laugh.
"Blythe was the one who asked me to come to you. She said you looked like you needed someone. She was right. But I think I needed you more. I needed to hear those words from you to realize something." Kenny looked at Kendra who doesn't get what he was trying to say.
"Sorry, sis. I shouldn't have stopped you from being friends with Blythe. Maybe I was being a little too protective of you because of what has happened in the past." Kenny lied, covering up for Blythe's secret. He stood up and held his hand out to his sister.
"Now, let's go back to the party shall we?" He said as Kendra reached out her hand and stood up. They started walking back to the party while Kendra was still wipping her tears.
"W-what was that about Blythe being a demon anyway..."
"Oh, just something random I said." He excused.
"Hmmmm.. Well, I'm telling you now. I'm not giving Blythe to you."
"Eh?"
"I know you better than anyone else and I know you forgot you were making me dislike her because you actually had fun with her while looking around the party. You like Blythe but too bad for you, I'm here and I'm never letting you or any other guy touch her." Kendra said, making Kenny chuckle.
"Alright, you caught me. But I'm not too sure that I won't do anything to touch her." Kenny said, making Kendra stop on her tracks.
"Y-you perverted brother!" She said as she smacked Kenny's head while running ahead of him.
When she arrived back the party, Blythe was stuffing her mouth with cupcakes. Blythe was shocked to see Kendra back that she had to swallow a cupcake whole.
"I-I..Th-..N-no one was eating them, so I thought-" Blythe said stuttering while Kendra laughed at her. She held Blythe's hand and pulled her towards the crowd while Blythe still held a cupcake in her other hand.
"Come. I wanna show you someone." She pulled Blythe to an old man with glasses. Blythe realized who it was and almost teared up seeing him.
"Sir Yu, this is the girl I've been talking about. Blythe, meet the author of The Haunting of Masque, Sir Eugene Yu. " Kendra said while Blythe was still in awe.
"I-It's a pleasure to meet you, sir!...cupcake?" Blythe said offering the cupckae she was holding. Sir Yu laughed at the messy Blythe.
"Thank you, child. Ah! right, here." Sir Yu held out a book 2 snd 3 of The Haunting of Masque. Blythe looked like was about to cry as she received the books.
"F-For me?"
"Why, yes, child. It's always an honor to meet a fan of my works. Ah, I'll have to excuse myself ladies. An old man could no longer hold his self when about to urinate." He said as he left the two. Blythe looked at Kendra still surprised.
"B-But how? And why?" She asked.
"Sir Yu was invited to the party and I called him earlier and told him about you. He said he'd most want you have the book 2 and 3 after hearing how much of a fan you are."
"Kendra... you ...are.. such. an. angel!" She hugged Kendra tightly who has giggling at how easily contented Blythe was.
"H-hey! hahahaha"
*SF: trumpet*
"Ladies and Gentlemen! His majesty, King Ceb Bloodworth and Queen Erika Bloodworth. Along with their 3 children, Princess Yumi Bloodworth, Prince Jiro Bloodworth, and Crown Prince Taka Bloodworth." Everyone clapped their hands except Blythe.
Taka?
She thought. Curiously, inserted through the crowd to see the Royals. And there he was..
"Ta..ka.." She said surprised to see her seatmate wearing a crown. Taka looked at her and was also surprised.
At that moment, they didn't notice the many people around them. The saw each other and they could feel their heart race from seeing each other in a place they didn't except the other to be in.
