Chapter Twelve

"You are free to go! We have statements from witnesses that day and saw you did not kidnap the merman!" the officer tells me. He removes the ankle bracelet from my ankle. It felt good to get this awful thing removed from my ankle. I glance down at my ankle. I had a red raw ring around it from the monitor being on there a few days. I rub my foot. My ex-boss Gary comes in the room. He talks to the police about the turn of events. He owed me an apology for firing me. That asshole. How could anyone believe that I was able to kidnap a merman all by myself? I was not a good swimmer. And I was a weakling. People sure were stupid. • ❤︎ •• ❤︎ • "Elissa, we have agreed to give you your job back. We have a few conditions first" Gary announces as he comes over to me. "What are they?" I wonder. Not that I wanted the job or planned on taking it. "We know you did not take the merman. We will give you the job back if you help us retrieve the merman into our custody. For some reason the sea which was after you. And the merman has a connection with you. He is protecting you. We saw footage. We want the witch and the merman" he says. "if you agree to help us then you can come back to work for us full time with a raise" he explains to me. I shake my head. "Well that is something. A raise huh?" I ask. Gary nods. "Full benefits" he adds. "No" I state. "What?" he stammers. "No, you heard me" I say. "I did not like how you were treating that merman. It was in humane. Then you were going to hand him over to the government so they could do god knows what to him! That was not right! You all do not care for sea creatures like I thought you had!" I snap angrily at him. "I will never help you get the merman back" I declare. "he is free, and I am glad. He is where he should be" Gary glares at me. "You are making a huge mistake" he warns me. "I would reconsider if I were you" he tells me. They lead him out of here. Away from me. • ❤︎ •• ❤︎ • "Where is my mother? Is she alright?" I ask the cops. "She is at the hospital. You may go see her. She had a minor concussion" warns the cop. He jots down the address of what hospital my mother was located at. I take the paper. Then head on my way to the hospital. It felt good to be out of my house. I was no longer under watch of the local police. I was free. All thanks to Kavan. I go to the hospital then find what room my mother was in. When I get there, she was resting. Her eyes flutter open. "Mom you are supposed to stay away" I remind her. "Oh, I don't have a concussion. Just some minor bumps" mom tells me. I hug her. "I am so glad you are okay, you had me worried" "Me to. I could not scream. She could form to look like anyone. That was why she looked like you when she kidnapped that merman. She was something evil" my mom says as she shudders. "I am sorry you got dragged not all this" I sigh. "So that was what you were making seaweed for all those days before? For a merman?" asks mother. I nod. "A special merman" I say. "You like him don't you dear?" mother asks me. I blush. "No, I am only worried he will get hurt" I lie. "That is all" "I can tell when you have a crush" mother teases. "I don't want to talk about it" I giggle. "They are keeping me here over night then I can go home in the morning. You don't have to stay dear" mom tells me. "I want to. I am worried about you" I argue with her. • ❤︎ •• ❤︎ • Mom soon falls back asleep. I hug her then make sure she is tucked in bed for the night. Then I head off on my way home. Wondering what job, I could do now. I had loved working at the aquarium. But I was not going to work there. They wanted me to bring the poor merman back and there was no way I was about to do that. He did not deserve that. I end up stopping by the beach before heading home to a mess to clean up. The sea witch had made a huge mess in our home. And I had to clean it when I got back home. I wander down to the beach. The sun had set. The moon was out. Dancing on the waters below. It looked lovely this time of night. I wondered if Kavan was okay. He was all I thought about these days. I just hoped he was safe was all. I never really got to say a proper goodbye to him. That was not fair. • ❤︎ •• ❤︎ • "Elissa!" I hear someone speak my name. I glance out. I did not see anyone. I look around me. No one in sight. "Hello?" I answer. "Elissa" they call out again. "Look further" they say. I squint and glance out in the waters. I see a giant tail swimming near me. "Kavan?" I ask. "Hi!" he says to me. "How are you? You better get going! The witch is looking for you and the aquarium" I warn him. He smiles. "I am fine and you?" he jokes. "I am sorry, I do not want anything bad to happen to you" I worry. "You are kind. But I can handle myself" he declares to me. "Kavan, a witch kidnapped you" I remind him. "And I freed myself" he reminds me. "Fine fine" I sigh. He smiles. "How is your mother?" he asks me. "She is banged up a little. At the hospital. But she is fine otherwise" I tell him. "I am glad you are safe" he tells me. I wondered something. Did I dare ask? "Did you find her? Your Elissa?" I ask. Our eyes meet. A smile crosses his face. "As a matter of fact, the sea witch knows her where abouts. And has been leading us to her. We think we may have found our princess" he explains to me. • ❤︎ •• ❤︎ • My heart sinks a little. Lucky girl was going to get to wed Kavan. She would be at his side. Ruling the sea. She would get his time. His embrace. His kisses. She was a lucky woman. I was not that lucky. "I hope you find her" I say softly. He nods. "You better go before someone sees you" I worry. "It was wonderful seeing you again" I say. "It was nice to see you to Elissa" he says before he swims away. • ❤︎ •• ❤︎ • I sigh deeply before I head home for the night. My necklace had been glowing again being around Kavan. Maybe once things settled down, I would see Kavan more. But what good would come if it? It would hurt to see him with another woman. Even if she was a mermaid. A beautiful mermaid. I get ready for bed after I clean the house. Then I write in my journal. I had not had time to do that in a very long long time. I wrote out my feelings about Kavan. And how much I was going to miss seeing him. I wondered if he would really miss me. I glance out at the waters out there by the window. To bad I was not a part of the sea. I could not swim properly. I would love to be a beautiful mermaid. Ruler of the sea. Ruler of Kavan's heart. Handsome Kavan. I climb in bed then turn off the lights. Hoping that time would heal this little crush that I had on a man a merman that I could never be with. A man that was never meant for me.
