Chapter 10

Jessica

Ugh. Dad hurry up, or someone. I hate being at school. Ms. Jane is waiting outside with me. “Who is picking you up Jessica?” I don’t know, my dad said he was, but if he is busy with a case, he might send Morgan or one of the other cops. “Okay, sweetie.” A green Toyota Camry pulls up. Hmm. It is the attorney lady from the station. “Hi, I am Jessica’s teacher Ms. Jane. Where is Mr. Mason? There was an incident at school today.” “Hello, I am ADA Allison Carson and I’m here to pick up Chief Mason’s daughter Jessica, but could I have a word with you?” “Of course.” So, should I just get in your car? “Yes, let me take your book bag.” Hmmm. The attorney lady has picked me up before when dad had some court stuff, but I wonder why she needs to talk to my teacher.

Carson walks to the car and gets in. So, my dad busy on a case? “Well, actually honey, your dad is at the hospital.” Oh no, I feel a lump in my throat, and that odd pain I had in my chest earlier. What do you mean? “How about I tell you when we get there?” No, if something is wrong with my dad, tell me now, or I will jump out of the car. I am so ready to jump. Since she doesn’t have child locks, I already got the door opened a smidge. “Whoa! Shut the door first and I’ll tell you.” “Your dad was trying to arrest someone, and they had a gun and he was shot.” What!? Is he alive? Please tell me my dad killed the guy who shot him… “I don’t know all the details Jessica, I was told, he was shot and to pick you up and bring you to the hospital.” Where was Morgan, he is my dad’s partner, he is supposed to back him up? “Morgan went to the hospital with your dad.” Oh, so you picked me up because when my dad can’t Morgan usually does. “I don’t know all the answers, but I am sure once we get to the hospital, Morgan and the doctors will explain everything, and you will get to see your dad.”
