The Void I was on my way to visit my parents in Chodecz when I stopped at a little restaurant just outside of Włocławek. It was set right on the banks of the Wisła. At one time, it had been a fisherman’s wharf. I left my car in the parking lot and went down to the pier. I felt the evening chill coming on. The greying light changed the colour of the river. The world was somehow empty, but beautiful all the same. I went into the bar and sat down near a window, so as to have a view of the water, the overgrown river-banks, and the sky stretched out above it all. Maybe this is all I’m looking for? Maybe I’ll never do anything for anybody? The only thing I knew how to do was to be delighted with the world. I ordered coffee, and water. I warmed up inside there. The wind struck the panes, which
