Slave 8: Changing Heart Alpha Malachi Earl Vandenberg My sister’s frantic alert had undoubtedly sent the entire packhouse into a state of alarm. Her fascination with my mate had been evident since her arrival, a connection born not merely from pity or a sense of duty, but from a genuine affection. Traditionally, it would have been the beta’s mate’s responsibility to take care of my mate, the Luna, acting as a kind of lady-in-waiting. However, as Blake, my beta, had yet to find his mate, the task had fallen to my sister. Galvin had kept me updated about my mate’s condition, too, and her behavior, even though I didn’t ask, but I shied away from confronting the reality of her presence. The notion of her being here, a part of my life, was still a difficult concept to grasp. Despite my internal turmoil about my mate, I had been quietly investigating the circumstances surrounding her, determined to find those who were responsible for her suffering. Yet, my efforts had yielded no significant progress, leaving me frustrated and uncertain. I stepped outside, the cool night air refreshing my senses. As I inhaled deeply, I heard the familiar voice of my wolf, Malik, echoing within my mind again. “Do you think our mate left us?” He asked, a tinge of sadness coloring his tone. His voice, absent for a week, had returned, roused by the urgency of the situation. He had intentionally blocked me, frustrated by my reluctance to visit our mate, but the gravity of the matter had forced him to break through the silence. “I don’t know…” I replied through my mind, my voice hesitant and unsure about what I was feeling right now. “It’s your f*****g fault,” Malik retorted, his tone sharp. “If you had faced her, she wouldn’t have done this. It’s our responsibility to make her feel safe.” His words cut deep, striking a chord of guilt within me. I knew he was right, but the confusion had paralyzed me. Ignoring Malik’s words, I turned my attention to the task at hand: finding our mate. Following her faint scent trail, I discovered her in an unexpected place: the garden of my mother. There, nestled on a bench, she lay, seemingly lost in a peaceful slumber. As I approached her, I noticed a slight tremor in her small frame, a clear sign of the cold night air. Without hesitation, I draped my jacket over her, shielding her from the chill. A sense of protectiveness washed over me, a primal instinct ignited by the sight of her vulnerability. A sigh of relief escaped my lips, too, as I observed her serene form, a stark contrast to the turmoil within her. Malik, sensing her presence, let out a low growl, his primal instincts awakened. As I stood there, so close to her, a strange sensation stirred within me. Her delicate scent filled the air, a subtle fragrance that was both intoxicating and comforting, drawing me closer to her, and igniting a strange, unfamiliar feeling within me. It was a magnetic force that threatened to consume me. “Bring her to her room this instant, Malachi! She’s freezing!” Malik’s urgent voice jolted me from my reverie. Without a second thought, I scooped our mate into my arms, careful to support her delicate frame. As I lifted her, our skin brushed against each other, and a strange sensation coursed through me. Her delicate scent, a captivating blend of floral and something uniquely her own filled my senses, leaving me breathless. f**k! f**k! f**k! As I carried her, I couldn’t ignore the stark reality of her frail form. Her weight, or rather, the lack thereof, was alarming. A wave of concern washed over me, and my face contorted with worry. My pack members were still looking for her, but when they witnessed me walking towards the packhouse, carrying an unconscious lady in my arms, which was an unusual sight, they immediately stopped looking for her. While my mate’s identity was still a secret, the image of me carrying an unconscious woman was bound to spark rumors and speculation. I braced myself for the inevitable gossip that would circulate the next morning throughout the pack. I wouldn’t be surprised anymore. “Brother! Thank goodness you found her!” My sister suddenly appeared and her relieved voice cut through the silence, halting my progress. Her worried gaze was fixed on my mate, her fragile form nestled in my arms. “Let’s take her to her room,” she urged. I followed her lead, my beta trailing behind. His gaze, a mixture of curiosity and amusement, was fixed on my sleeping mate. A silent growl rumbled in my chest as he attempted to catch a glimpse of her face. It was a primal instinct, a possessive urge that I hadn’t anticipated. I looked at him with sharp eyes, it was a silent warning, to which he responded with a playful surrender gesture. “Shhh! Brother! She’s sleeping!” Mariam’s hushed voice interrupted my thoughts. She led the way, her concern evident in her every move. I sighed, the weight of the situation settling upon me. “It seems like we will have a luna soon,” my beta teased, a mischievous glint in his eye. I couldn’t help but let out a frustrated ‘tsk’, the absurdity of the situation finally sinking in. The future, once uncertain, now seemed to be taking shape, a future that included this fragile, mysterious woman. “You better not avoid her after this again, Malachi. Otherwise, you will be the first alpha to be abandoned by his wolf,” Malik threatened, his voice filled with a seriousness that left no room for doubt. I gazed at my mate, her peaceful face a stark contrast to the chaos that had consumed my life. Her long, light blonde hair framed her delicate features, casting a soft shadow over her pale face. She looked so innocent, so serene, so beautiful, it was almost unfair. A surge of protectiveness washed over me, a primal instinct that I couldn’t ignore. I realized then that I had been foolish to resist the moon goddess’ plan. Fate had intervened, and I had been chosen. It was time to embrace my destiny, to embrace her. I won’t avoid her ever again. ***
