Abused 7: A Small Talk “But you haven’t eaten a proper meal in days,” she reminded me, “Just one bite,” she pleaded, her eyes filled with concern. “You’ve only been eating fruit for a week. You need to eat to regain your strength,” she then suddenly picked up a spoon and scooped some soup, “May I…?” she asked, while I only looked at her as she brought the spoon to my lips. I blinked, and I just unconsciously opened my mouth, letting her feed me. I noticed her satisfaction as she fed me, her eyes filled with a warmth that I had rarely experienced. However, my appetite was sated after a few spoonfuls of soup. I gently turned my head away, signaling that I was full. She paused, her hand hovering in the air, before withdrawing it. “Are you full?” She asked with her usual gentle voice. I nodded, my gaze fixed on the orange in my hand. I took another bite, the sweet juice cooling my throat. “But you’ve only eaten quite a bit,” she commented, but I didn’t pay attention to her. Until I heard her chuckle, “You’re quite the character, aren’t you?” I titled my head, as I looked at her this time, my eyes wide with innocence. I didn’t understand her words, but her tone was kind and playful. I stared at her, my eyes wide with wonder. I had never seen such kindness in someone’s eyes before. She seemed to genuinely care for me, a stark contrast to the cruelty I had endured. I realized, to my surprise, that I was no longer trembling in her presence. The fear that had once consumed me was slowly dissipating. “You’re so adorable! You look like an innocent child with those big, round eyes!” She exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “Would you like me to feed you again later? You have to take your medicine after lunch,” she said. I nodded, which made her smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners, “Alright, that’s good to hear.” After that, she began to talk about random things, her voice a soothing melody that lulled my worries away. I listened intently, my curiosity piqued by her stories. “You know, I had a brother… his name is Malachi Earl Vandenberg,” she began. “He’s a… complex individual. His mind works in mysterious ways, but he’s the kindest brother I’ve ever had,” she continued, her gaze fixed on me. I shifted my position, turning to face her while I could feel my eyelids dropping. “He might seem cold and distant on the outside, but deep down, he’s a gentle soul,” she added, a soft smile playing on her lips. I furrowed. Gentle soul? Aren’t all men monsters? That’s what Maya had always told me, and it was a belief I’d clung to. After all, the cruelty I’d witnessed from men like Alpha Vito, Young Master Donnel, and Young Master Jackson had solidified this belief. She continued talking until I drifted off to sleep. Her voice was a lullaby that carried me into a peaceful slumber. When I awoke, the room was bathed in the soft glow of the moonlight. I realized I had overslept, missing the lunch that Lady Mariam had prepared. The room was hushed, the only sound the soft ticking of the clock. I swung my legs over the bed and stood up, my bare feet padding softly against the cold floor. As usual, I drifted towards the large window, the glass panes offering a glimpse of the serene garden beyond. The garden outside, a riot of colors, beckoned me. I gazed out, lost in thought. The Moonbane Pack, my newfound abilities, and the mysterious silence of my prophetic visions occupied my mind. Or perhaps, there was nothing significant to happen, no impending doom or glorious triumph to happen. Until the sight of the vibrant blue roses, a unique and captivating sight, caught my attention. A sudden, inexplicable urge surged through me, a pull towards the enchanting blue roses. A dangerous impulse, yet I couldn't resist. I tiptoed to the door, my heart pounding with anticipation and fear. I peered out cautiously, relieved to find the hallway empty. The silence was broken only by the whispers of my footsteps. I navigated the winding path, relying on my instincts to guide me. I didn’t see anyone in this place, and I quickly descended the stairs. Suddenly, the sound of approaching footsteps jolted me. I instinctively pressed myself against the wall the moment I reached the first floor. My breath held as a group of pack members strolled past, oblivious to my presence. This was a familiar routine, a risky game I often played to seek solace in the nearby forest when I was in the Moonbane Pack. The moment the pack members passed, I darted out of hiding. But I decided to follow them secretly, assuming that they might be going outside. They were oblivious to my presence, and I found out they were heading outside. That’s why I found the backdoor with their help. I swiftly made my way towards the exit after minutes, and as soon as I stepped outside, a wave of relief washed over me. Drawn to the allure of the garden, I began to wander. The soft earth beneath my bare feet grounded me, and the gentle breeze caressed my skin. Lost in thought, I didn’t realize how far I had wandered until I stumbled upon a familiar sight: the enchanting blue roses. I didn’t know how I found it, but I’m already here. I lingered in the garden, oblivious to the biting cold, clad only in a thin dress. Unbeknownst to me, my escape had alerted the packhouse. *** Alpha Malachi Earl Vandenberg I was engrossed in work when a sudden, urgent mind-link jolted me from my concentration. It was my sister’s frantic voice, echoed through my mind, which stirred my wolf, “Brother! Your mate is missing!” Suddenly, a wave of unease washed over me, a stark contrast to the usual calm I maintained. The memory of her frail, pale form resurfaced. Since her arrival, I’d been avoiding her, still grappling with the surreal reality of having a mate, let alone one who was wolfless and a slave. “f**k!” I abruptly rose to my feet, a surge of adrenaline coursing through me. I found myself rushing outside, driven by a newfound urgency. This was a side of me I hadn’t anticipated, a protective instinct ignited by a bond I was still learning to understand. I knew I had no desire for a mate, yet my body language said otherwise. ***
