Lunch was uncomfortable, to say the least. I tried hard to keep face, but Madeline’s words kept running through my mind. He was supposed to marry Isabel. Another secret he kept from me. Another lie. In a way, I was grateful that Madeline had told me. It was odd that she decided to do it now, a couple weeks before the wedding. But if she hadn’t, I would’ve never known. “Something wrong?” Vern whispers, lightly nudging her shoulder with mine. I hesitate. Should I tell her? Did she know about the arrangement? I felt like just a pawn in their game and I didn’t really want to know if Vern had played a part in this. “It’s nothing,” I lie. If she notices, she doesn’t say. Instead, her gaze flicks to Isabel. I let my eyes fall back down to my plate, eating a forkful of salad. I wasn’t hungry
