World Gone Cold
*crunch* *crunch* The sound of debris and fallen leaves, echoed eerily on my ears as I took each step. My breath steady, tired eyes roaming warily as I gripped the rifle within my calloused hands. The beating of my heart nervously pounds as if it’s about to burst out of my ribs. *gulp* My grip on the rifle tightened as I kept walking forward, trying to locate a place to stay before the sun dips from the sky. Each step I took felt heavy on my weary body, ‘Please’. I was growing desperate, the sun baring down on me like a constant reminder that the cruel darkness of night will come. Shifting quietly to the left, there a small house stood. Old and abandoned, its walls creeping with moss. Proceeding inside with renewed vigor, checking each corner with keen eyes before locking and barricading the door. Sitting by the door, rifle ready on my hand as I finally took a breath of relief. Now the only thing to be done is wait for the night to pass. The sunlight from the outside gradually dimmed, the sun departing for the moon to finally take over. A time dreaded by me, once again I held my breath. *growls* *crunch* Shutting my eyes close, ears strained at each sound coming from outside. The dragging steps of countless feet, inhumane growls that sends shivers down ones’ spine, and the chill in the surrounding wind like December winter. Fear gripped my heart, coldness wrapping my body in a merciless embrace. I trembled as my body crouched to the corner almost as if I was trying to meld myself with the walls. The dreadful sounds outside heightened my already weak mind. ‘Just breathe. Calm yourself and the night shall pass’. Like a mantra, my body and mind gradually stilled like a pond. Before I knew it, the exhaustion pulled my consciousness to an unwanted sleep. *rustle* *groans* I awoke with the sun bathing the surroundings in its warm graces. The light filtering through the drawn curtains. Placing my ear by the door before standing up and peeking outside. My feet took a hesitant step. The world once again fell into a quiet hush, no life present apart from myself and remnants of the once thriving civilization, scattered in abandon. *sighs* “Another day has begun”
