Chapter 8: The True Face

971 Words
Days in Monteverde continued, with the library at the heart of community life. Solange and Luna had settled into a routine, one in which Chris, despite Solange's doubts, had integrated. However, this superficial peace was starting to show cracks. One night, after closing the library, Solange and Chris were in the break room, going over some documents. Luna had already gone to bed, and the silence of the night seemed to amplify the unresolved tensions between them. "Thank you for letting me stay here, Solange," Chris broke the silence, his voice carrying a mix of gratitude and tension. "I know this isn't easy for you." "It isn't, Chris," Solange responded, her tone revealing both the hardness and fragility of her emotions. "I want to believe you've changed, but it's hard to forget what happened." Chris nodded, though his expression seemed more strained than usual. "I've tried everything to show you I'm different. But sometimes it feels like no matter what I do, I'll always be under Lucas's shadow." Solange looked at him, surprised by the bitterness in his words. "It's not a competition, Chris. Lucas was... is important to me and to this community. His memory isn't about you or me, but what he stood for." Chris clenched his fists, and for a moment, Solange saw a flash of the anger she had come to fear. "And when will it be enough, Solange?" he said, his voice rising slightly. "Always Lucas this, Lucas that. I'm tired of living in his shadow, of being second place in your life." Solange's heart raced. This wasn't the first time Chris had shown jealousy, but this time it felt more intense, more dangerous. "Chris, you're misunderstanding things. Lucas was a dear friend, someone who changed our lives for the better. That has nothing to do with what you and I are trying to rebuild." "Friend?" Chris scoffed. "He was always more than that to you, wasn't he? I always saw you spending more time with him than with me. And now I have to endure seeing his name glorified in every corner of this damn library?" Solange felt a knot in her stomach. She knew this moment would come, but she didn't expect it to be so soon or so intense. "Chris, it's not fair for you to bring this up. The library is a tribute to someone who did so much for this community. It's not an attack on you." Chris stood up abruptly, knocking over a stack of books. The fury on his face was palpable. "You always defended him. Always! Even when he wasn't here, it felt like your heart was with him. And me? What am I in this equation, Solange?" Solange stood up too, trying to remain calm. "You're the father of my daughter, someone who said he had changed and was seeking a second chance. But if you keep acting like this, we can't move forward." Chris approached, his voice low but venomous. "Move forward? How can we move forward when you can't even stop talking about him? How do you expect me to stay here, knowing I'll always be second place?" "Chris, please calm down. You're scaring Luna and me," Solange said, stepping back slightly. Chris looked at her with disdain. "Maybe it's time you stop living in the past, Solange. Lucas is dead, and I'm here. I'm alive!" Solange felt tears welling up in her eyes, but she stood her ground. "Lucas may be dead, but his legacy lives on. And I won't let your anger and jealousy destroy what we've built here. If you've truly changed, prove it. Control your anger and respect Lucas's memory." Chris took a deep breath, his expression softening slightly, but Solange could see the inner struggle hadn't ended. "I don't want to lose Luna," he finally said, his voice softer. "I don't want to lose you. But you have to understand how I feel." "I do understand, Chris. But this is something we need to overcome together, not by fighting each other." The following weeks were tense. Chris tried to maintain his composure, but Solange noticed the facade was cracking. Small arguments escalated into big fights, and every mention of Lucas was a trigger. One afternoon, as Solange prepared a talk about the library's impact on the community, Chris entered the room abruptly. "Another talk about Lucas?" he asked sarcastically. "When will you stop talking about him?" Solange looked at him, weary. "Chris, this isn't just about Lucas. It's about the community and the positive impact we've created together." "Lies!" Chris shouted. "This has always been about him. It was always about him. I was never enough for you, was I?" Solange tried to stay calm, but Chris's anger was overflowing. "I can't do this anymore, Chris. I can't keep living with your constant anger and jealousy. You need help, and I can't be the one to give it to you." Chris approached, his face just inches from Solange's. "So what will you do? Will you kick me out again? Will you let Lucas continue to control your life even from the grave?" Solange felt a chill run down her spine. "It's not about kicking you out, Chris. It's about protecting Luna and myself. I can't let your anger consume us." Chris fell silent for a moment, then took a step back. "Maybe you're right. Maybe I can't change. But I can't bear to keep living in the shadow of a dead man." Without another word, Chris turned and walked out of the library, leaving Solange trembling on the verge of tears. That night, as Solange comforted Luna, she knew she had made the right decision. She couldn't let Chris's toxic presence destroy what they had built. Lucas's memory, his legacy, was too valuable to be tarnished by jealousy and anger.
