Chapter 7: Fragile Trust

The days grew longer in Monteverde, and the library remained a place filled with life and hope. For Solange, however, Chris’s return brought a constant mix of emotions. Despite his promises and the small changes he showed, it was difficult for her to trust him completely.

Every day, Chris arrived at the library punctually, ready to spend time with Luna and help with any tasks needed. His presence, while reassuring for Luna, kept Solange in a constant state of vigilance. She observed every interaction, every gesture, looking for signs that his old behavior might resurface.

One afternoon, while organizing a reading activity for the village children, Solange found herself alone with Chris in the break room. The silence between them was palpable, laden with the weight of their shared history.

“Thank you for letting me be here, Solange,” Chris said, breaking the silence. “I know this isn’t easy for you.”

Solange looked at him, feeling the conflict within her.

“It’s not easy, Chris,” she replied, her voice showing both the hardness and fragility of her emotions. “I want to believe you’ve changed, but it’s hard to forget what happened.”

Chris nodded, his expression reflecting regret.

“I understand. I don’t expect you to trust me right away. I just want to show you that I’m different. I want to be a better person for Luna and for you, if you’ll give me the chance.”

Solange sighed, feeling the weight of his words. She knew Chris was making a genuine effort, but her heart was still full of scars from the past. She couldn’t afford to let her guard down completely, not after everything she had been through.

“We’re going to need time, Chris,” she finally said. “And not just time, but actions that show you’ve really changed.”

Chris nodded again, understanding the magnitude of the challenge ahead of him.

“I’m willing to do whatever it takes, Solange.”

In the following days, Chris continued to be consistent in his behavior. He got more involved in library activities, participated in community events, and strived to be a positive figure in Luna’s life. However, the shadow of his old habits still loomed, and Solange couldn’t ignore the lingering doubt in her heart.

One night, after closing the library, Solange and Luna sat together in their living room. Luna, with her innocent wisdom, sensed the tension in her mother.

“Mom, do you think Dad has really changed?” Luna asked, looking at her with eyes full of curiosity and hope.

Solange took a deep breath before answering.

“I don’t know, Luna. I want to believe he has, but we need to be sure. I want you to know that no matter what happens, I’ll always be here to protect you.”

Luna nodded, understanding her mother’s concern.

“I want him to have changed too, Mom. But I understand why you’re worried.”

Her daughter’s sincerity made Solange feel a bit more relieved. She knew that, no matter what happened, she and Luna would face the challenges together.

A few days later, while Solange was reviewing some documents at the library, she received a phone call from Luna’s school. The voice of the principal on the other end sounded worried.

“Mrs. Solange, we need you to come to the school immediately. Luna has had a problem with another student and is very upset.”

Solange felt a wave of concern as she hurried to the school. Upon arrival, she found Luna in the principal’s office, her eyes filled with tears. Chris was also there, with a genuinely concerned expression on his face.

“What happened?” Solange asked, approaching her daughter and hugging her.

“One of the boys started teasing me because Dad came back,” Luna sobbed. “He said bad things about him, and I just... I just got angry.”

The principal explained that Luna had had an altercation with another student who provoked her. Chris approached Luna, kneeling down to her level.

“I’m so sorry, Luna,” he said softly. “I didn’t want this to cause you problems.”

Solange looked at Chris, seeing the sincerity in his face. It was a reminder that, despite her doubts, he was trying to do the right thing.

Back at home, Solange and Chris discussed how to handle the situation with Luna. Solange still felt the doubt, but she also knew they needed to face these challenges together.

Over time, tensions began to ease, and Luna adapted to having her father back in her life. Although Solange’s trust in Chris was still being built, she decided to give him the chance to prove he had changed.

Life in Monteverde continued, and the library remained a beacon of hope and community. Solange, with the help of Luna and Chris’s constant effort, found a new balance. She knew that the path to full trust would be long, but she was willing to walk it, one step at a time, always with Lucas’s memory guiding her forward.
