A year had passed since Lucas's unexpected death. Monteverde had changed since then, but the impact of his life and legacy remained strong. The library that Solange and Lucas had dreamed of together was complete, and it had become the heart of the community. For Solange and Luna, it was a refuge, a place where they could feel Lucas's presence and honor his memory.
Solange was in the library, organizing the recently donated books. The usual bustle of children and adults filled the air, and although sadness still lingered in her heart, she found comfort in knowing that Lucas's legacy lived on.
As she placed a book on the shelf, she heard the doorbell ring. She looked up and was surprised to see a tall man, strongly built with a familiar face, standing at the entrance. It was Chris, her ex-husband and Luna’s father. She hadn’t seen him in years, not since she left him due to his jealous and problematic behavior.
Chris approached with a look of remorse on his face. Solange felt a mix of emotions: surprise, unease, and a small spark of hope that, perhaps, things had changed.
“Solange,” Chris said, his voice trembling a bit. “I’ve come to see you and Luna. I’ve changed. I want to make things right.”
Solange looked at him, trying to read the sincerity in his eyes. The relationship with Chris had been tumultuous, and leaving him was a difficult but necessary decision. Now, after so long, she wasn’t sure how to feel.
“Chris… I don’t know what to say,” Solange finally replied. “A lot has happened. What made you come here?”
Chris lowered his gaze, ashamed.
“I’ve been working on myself. I realized how much I was wrong. When I heard about Lucas and what happened, it made me reflect a lot. I want to be a better man, for you and for Luna.”
Solange felt a lump in her throat. Losing Lucas had been devastating, and the idea of opening the door to someone who had caused so much pain in the past scared her. But she also knew that people could change, and she wanted to believe that Chris had found a way to redeem himself.
“This won’t be easy,” Solange said firmly. “Luna and I have built a life here. I can’t allow anything or anyone to jeopardize it.”
Chris nodded, understanding the gravity of her words.
“I know, and I don’t expect you to accept me right away. I just want the chance to prove to you that I’ve changed. I want to be a part of Luna’s life, if you’ll let me.”
Solange looked at Chris, searching for any sign of the person he used to be, but she saw only a genuinely remorseful man. She sighed, knowing that this decision would affect not only her life but also Luna’s.
“We can start with small steps,” she finally said. “I’ll talk to Luna and see how she feels. But I want you to know that this won’t be easy for any of us.”
Chris smiled, grateful for the opportunity.
“Thank you, Solange. I won’t let you down.”
As Chris walked away, Solange felt a mix of relief and fear. She knew that the path to reconciliation would be long and complicated, but she also understood that life was full of second chances.
Later, when Luna arrived at the library after school, Solange explained the situation to her. Luna, surprised and somewhat cautious, agreed to meet her father under the condition that Solange would be present at all times.
The days that followed were filled with difficult conversations and mixed emotions. Chris worked hard to show his change, and little by little, Luna began to open up to the idea of having her father back in her life. Solange watched cautiously, always ready to protect her daughter.
