Jasmine
The night went on. The mating ceremony was much bigger and fancier than it would have been if Alpha Alexander had married me. We made eyes, but he never approached. A part of me wanted to talk to him, to wish him a happy life with the woman he married. That woman who had always taken everything from me.
I felt our bond break the second Mason and I exchanged vows. While Alpha Alexander was still my mate, I was no longer a slave to my feelings for him.
"Enjoying your little wedding?" Someone said behind me, making me turn. Jessy held a glass of wine in hand, smiling at me. "I'd have picked a different flower pattern. Oh, and the colors, little sis, they're hideous. There's too many people, takes away the idea of a wedding, don't you think?" She raised a brow. "It's starting to look like one of those human political campaigns."
"Didn't you always dream of having a big wedding? You never stopped talking about it." I turned to her.
"N-no. Why would I want something this hideous?"
"I couldn't control who attends. I got married to a prince, Jessy, a lot of packs have eyes on us."
"Already proud, I see." She scoffed. "I'm not jealous of you. I don't know why you're trying to rub it in my face."
"I'm not doing anything. Besides, I didn't pick out the flower pattern. The queen did. She handled everything, actually." Her eyes lit up, and she almost spilled her drink. She set it down aggressively on one of the trays held by the servers.
"Tell me, what is she like?" Her eyes were wide with excitement.
"Thrilling. I can't yet judge her, I'm trying to learn, but she's been amazing to me."
"Wow!" She gripped my hand, swinging it, hurting me slightly. "Isn't that so cool? The queen knows my sister. So technically, she knows me too. I can't wait to move in and get my own slaves. I won't let them rest. I'll order them around. I’ll shower with milk. I'll have them hold out clothes for me so I can choose, like they do in those Barbie movies. Alexander is going to love this!" She rolled her eyes, staring dreamily at the ceiling. My brow furrowed as I looked at her.
"What? What do you mean move in? Move in where?"
"Well, here, silly. We're the future queen's family. Goddess, I've always wondered what it would be like to visit an Alpha's house. And I got married to one. And now, something out of this world has happened. I'm going to live in a castle!"
My blood ran cold as her words registered in my head. I was slowly beginning to understand what she meant. Why would she think that would happen? Had I given her the wrong idea?
"Jessy, you can't be serious," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Of course I'm serious, Jasmine! Why wouldn't I be? This is like, the ultimate dream come true for me."
"For you, ofcourse. But what about me? You don't get to just waltz in and live with me after everything you've done.Besides, you husband is an Alpha, he has a pack to take care of, and that means living there."
"But I don't want to. His packhouse is a pigsty compared to this place.'' She huffed, pouting. "I'll live here with you little sis.'' She smiled, batting her eyes.
"You slept with my mate, you got pregnant for him. You watched me plan my wedding with Alexander while planning you secret venom. You revealed that you're pregnant for him an hour before he was to marry me. You two humiliated me. You took everything for me. Jessy, you got married in my place!'' I tried not to raise my voice. I was reeling with anger. My blood was boiling.
All Jessy did was look at me like I had two heads. "Oh, come on, Jasmine. Don't be so dramatic. We're family. Family sticks together."
"Family? You slept with my mate, Jessy! You got pregnant by him. You waited so you could ruin the day I've always dreamt of.''
"But see, I helped you. You got a bigger wedding. You should be thanking me.''
I've never had a violent bone in me. But right now, all I wanted to do was knock my sister's teeth in.
She waved a hand dismissively. "Besides, it's not like he was that great anyway. You’re with a prince now! Isn’t that better?"
" That doesn't matter, and i don't erase what you two did to me. You betrayed me. You took something from me that I can never get back."
"What's that? Alexander? Come on..''
"No! Mybeauty. My beauty to see life as beautifully as it used. Now, each time I look at someone, I'm constantly waiting for them to stab me in the back. The two people I loved most in the whole world betrayed me. Dad didn't even follow after me, he stayed and watched you get married to my mate. He supported your betrayal. You all betrayed me!''
I bit back my tears, she rolled her eyes. "You're still hung up on that? Goddess, Jasmine, you need to let it go. It’s not healthy to hold onto grudges."
"I’m not holding a grudge, Jessy. I’m setting boundaries. You can’t come live in the castle. End of discussion."
She crossed her arms and pouted. "You're just being selfish. You always were. You don’t want me to be happy."
"I want you to be happy, but not at my expense. You can't manipulate your way into this."
"Oh, so now I’m manipulating you? That’s rich. You’re the one who’s always been the favorite. You get everything handed to you, and you still find a way to complain."
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. " Favorite? I lived as a rogue, begging for scraps of food. Abused, isolated, alone. All the while, you lived in our house with dad and your mom. The answer is no, Jessy. You're not getting your way with this."
She stomped her foot like a child throwing a tantrum. "This is so unfair! I deserve to be happy too!'' She glared at me, "You’re going to regret this, Jasmine. Mark my words." With that, she turned on her heel and stormed off, leaving me standing there. My heart was heavy, I didn't know what to feel. I took off to the balcony to get some fresh air, but something told me it wasn't the last I'd hear of Jessy. She was my stepmother, I knew her very well.
My heart bled for her. I had a certain softness for her, even with all she did. Family was family. However, this new life was for my child. And anywhere Jessy sets foot, it becomes destroyed.
Not again!
I will not let her spread her poison in my new home.
