THAT QUESTION lingered on inside my head the whole day. Even if it was hours after the phone call, I couldn't get it out of my mind.
If anything, that phone call brought more questions than answers.
Seriously, why do girls have to be so confusing? And there is yet another question to add to my heap of questions-about-girls-especially-one-I'll-never-be-able-to-answer.
"Mason? Are you awake?" I heard my brother say.
Unfortunately, I was awake. Since I had so many questions lingering in my mind.
I opened my eyes to see Marcus standing there, with my phone in his hands. I sat up, in order to find out why he was holding my phone, and why he was waking me up on a Saturday.
"Someone texted you, claiming it's urgent after I replied you were asleep." He told me.
Why would James text me that he's got something urgent to tell me? He would just leave it until I would see him.
Unless, it was Emily.
"Can I have my phone, please?" I asked.
Marcus nodded and handed over my phone before looming around and eventually leaving my room.
I opened up my phone, to see the number has texted me again, so I decided to open it and see what this person said.
Emily: Is he awake yet?
Mason: Er, hey, I'm up now. Who's this?
Emily: Who do you think?
Mason: Oh, Emily.
Emily: You bet. So, do you have your tuxedo ready yet?
Mason: ...
Emily: Better be ready by six. Later.
After that, I turned my phone off. Great, I had until six to get a tux. Well, I did have one – I just didn't know where it was.
So, I'm screwed if I don't manage to find one by the time Emily comes to pick me up.
Shoot.
I came downstairs to see Ellanor holding a basket of laundry, smiling at me. I smiled back at her, attempting to make a trip to the kitchen for breakfast.
Keyword – attempting.
Ellanor stood in front of me, still smiling. I shot her a confused look, wondering why she was like this today. Not like Ellanor isn't a generally happy person, she just doesn't usually stop me from going to the kitchen.
What's gotten into her?
"So, who's the girl that texted you?" She asked me.
Oh no. How did she know it was a girl, when Marcus called Emily 'a person'?
"What? No-one." I tried convincing her, but my stutter said otherwise.
And so did the temperature of my face, which was currently rising and turning a visible red.
"Oh, come on. Tell me." She insisted.
I looked down, blushing even more (against my will – like always), staying silent.
I heard Ellanor laugh before she patted my back.
"About time you get a girlfriend." She told me before walking towards the direction of the living room.
My face was getting redder by the minute. Girlfriend? Ha, she was barely a girl friend. But, if Ellanor thinks I have a girlfriend, most likely everyone I know will think that, too.
I decided to go into the kitchen to finally have some breakfast. I saw Marcus, sitting on one of the chairs, eating Cheerios.
"I never knew you had a girlfriend." Marcus said, when I opened one of the cupboards.
My face returned to the red shade it was prior to this moment.
"I don't!" I told him.
From out of nowhere, the temperature of the room started heating up. Was my face that hot, or is it actually the room?
"Yes you do. I heard Ellanor say it." He told me, continuing to eat his cereal.
I shook my head violently, trying to convince him otherwise.
"You don't need to lie, you know. It's fine for you to have a girlfriend." Marcus claimed.
"I know it is, but I don't. She's just my friend." I told him.
Was Emily actually my friend? Because, I'm pretty sure I had a mental discussion earlier (with my brain) saying that she's 'barley a girl friend'.
Great. Here I am having another mental discussion.
"Oh. Okay. But she'll eventually be your girlfriend." Marcus told me, then took his bowl to the sink and left the kitchen.
I pursed my lips together. Emily? My girlfriend? I would most likely find the cure to cancer than get Emily to be my girlfriend.
By the time I finished breakfast, I decided to try and find the tuxedo. My decision was made after I imagined how headlines would look like if I didn't.
BOY MURDERED AFTER FAILING TO FIND A TUXEDO.
No, thank you. I value my life and the very tiny reputation I have.
The first place I decided to look, is the very back of my closet.
I must have looked for about an hour, until I decided to call it quits.
"What are you looking for?" I heard Ellanor ask.
I jumped back in surprise, unaware that Ellanor was watching me.
"A tuxedo." I admitted.
Ellanor smirked at me and walked into my room. She sat on my bed and crossed her arms, continuing to grin at me. My eyebrows scrunched together as I turned away from her, wondering why she was acting like this.
"Are you going on a date with your girlfriend?" She asked.
My eyes widened and my face turned hot. So this is what she thought. She still believed I had a girlfriend.
I turned around to face her and shook my head. She chuckled and wore the same, teasing grin.
"I may be in my fifties, but I can tell when someone's lying." She told me.
"But I don't have a girlfriend. She's only a friend!" I tried to convince Ellanor, but she wouldn't budge.
"Well, if you want your tux, it's in your parents' closet. Towards the left." She told me and got up, before leaving.
Well, at least something other than my embarrassment came out from that situation.
Ellanor insisted on doing my hair, since I need to look good for my 'first date'.
She slicked it back with a hair gel I didn't even know was in my house, and then put water on it so it wouldn't look like it was gelled as much as it was.
Then, I sat on the couch, watched TV and anxiously waited for Emily to arrive. This whole thing was still kind of weird, being the reason behind my nervousness.
While I was in the middle of watching the program that was on, I heard knocking on the door. I fell off the couch, afraid it was Emily. I wasn't ready.
"Mason, it's for you." I heard Ellanor shout.
I walked to the doorway, dreading to see Emily. But when I did, I was shocked.
She looked beautiful.
For starters, Emily had her hair tied up into a formal bun, making her hair look kind of like a Swiss Roll. At the front, were loose tendrils, which were curled. She had a light amount of makeup on, like she usually did. Emily also wore a tight black dress, which came to about the top of her knees. To top everything off, she wore black stilettos.
To simplify it – the exact opposite of what she would usually wear.
"Come on, dork. Stop checking me out." Emily smirked.
My face turned red, and then Ellanor started laughing.
"Oh, what an adorable couple you two are." She said after sobering up.
"Mason is not my boyfriend. He's only my accomplice to an event hosted by my family." Emily said calmly, while I questioned if she was abducted by aliens on her way here.
"Oh. What shame. However, my point still stands." Ellanor told us, before walking away.
I looked down and walked outside. Isn't the man usually supposed to collect his date? Isn't the girl supposed to be embarrassed because her parents said they were together in front of their 'date'?
All of a sudden, I felt Emily's lips on mine. I darted my eyes up and saw her eyes were closed as she wrapped her arms around my neck.
I started kissing her back, but shortly after, she broke the kiss.
"What was that for?" I asked, quietly.
"I just felt like kissing you." She told me.
But the thing is, I wasn't referring to the kiss. I was referring to her breaking the kiss.
