Haris stopped and pulled out his cell phone. “I haven’t seen any more of those burn marks,” Mitra said, rubbing at a patch of mud on her face. “Neither have I,” Haris said. “Or anything else for that matter.” His phone flickered between having a single bar and no service. There were no messages from Zaid either. He tried to call Abe’s number, but it wouldn’t connect. “We also have no service, and we have no idea how to get back, even if the current has calmed down. Let’s head back to the canoe and see if I have better service. It’s going to get dark soon,” Haris said. His stomach grumbled from his missed dinner too.
