CHAPTER 10 | THE TWIST

26-year-old Detective Jayden Bennett. He was sitting on the couch & reading a novel. All his attention was on the novel. Suddenly, his phone started to ring & interrupted his attention. Jayden was a little annoyed.

“Oh man! I hate this! Whenever I try to read this novel with all of my attention, something will be interrupted.”

Jayden picked up the phone. “Hello”

“Hello, is detective Jayden Bannet speaking?” Someone asked in a deep voice.

“Yeah, I’m. Who are you?”

“I’m Bill Mulgannon. I heard about you a lot, about your success. I was looking for someone like you who can handle my case. I have a case for you.”

“Oh, that’s great. So what is the case?”

“ I’ll discuss it personally. I have the address of your office. I want to meet with you. Tell me when you can meet with me?”

Jayden looked at the clock. It was 9 am.

“ I can meet with you within 2 hours. If you can, then we’ll meet up.”

“Okay. I have no problem. See you in two hours.”

“Okay.”

Jayden hung up the phone. He guessed that the case would be complicated. He guessed that just then he heard Bill’s voice. Jayden turned his attention back to reading the novel.

After finishing reading the 10th chapter of the novel, Jayden got up from the couch and went to his room. He started to get ready to go to the office & meet with Bill. Jayden took out his favorite complete black suit from the closet & wore it. He took his laptop & all necessary files into his bag, picked up the car key & left the house.

Jayden was walking towards his car. He looked great in a complete black suit and a dark brown hat. He was in a hurry, an important client was waiting for him. He got up into his car. Jayden put on the seat belt. Jayden looked at him in the front mirror inside the car.

“Perfect! I look very neat and formal. Such a look is the identity of a detective.”

Jayden was a very conscious and strict person about his looks and career. He took his every step very intelligently and carefully in every aspect of life. He has a sharp wit and intelligence. All in all, Jayden was a successful detective.

Jayden was driving his car. He was very excited about handling a case again. This would be his 50th case. Jayden has handled many cases in a short span of time. That was a big success for him.

After driving for one hour, Jayden reached his office. Everyone was greeting him. He walked out towards his room. He put his bag on the table & sat down on his chair. He put the bell on his table & called his assistant,

“ Yes sir!”

“Hey Joe, my one client named Bill Mulgannon was supposed to come. Hasn't he arrived yet?”

“ I don’t know sir. Let me check the waiting area.”

The assistant rushed to the waiting room. He saw that there was nobody there. He came back.

“No sir. There is no one in the waiting room.”

“Shoot man! He told me he'd be here within 2 hours. I don’t understand why people are always so late. I don’t like being late at all. Joe, you keep your eyes on the waiting room. Whenever you see any person, you ask him his name. If he says that his name is Bill Mulgannon, you'll take him into my room. Understand?”

“Ok sir. I completely understand.”

10 minutes later, Jayden’s assistant came with Bill. He knocked at the door.

“ Come in.”

“Sir, Bill Mulgannon is here.”

“Oh okay. You go now & let him come to the room.”

The assistant left the room. Bill entered & greeted Jayden.

“ Hello, Mr. Jayden Bannet. Pleasure to meet you. I’m Doctor Bill Mulgannon.”

“Hello, doctor Bill. Pleasure to meet you too.”

“Excuse me for being late. I was stuck with a patient.”

“Oh it’s okay. That’s not a big deal. Please have a seat.”

Bill & Jayden sat down. Jayden asked his assistant to bring a cup of coffee for both of them. They started their conversation,

“I heard about you a lot, Mr. Jayden. I also looked on the internet to know more about you, I got to know your intelligence very well. Solving so many cases at such a young age is truly remarkable. How did you manage to be such a successful detective?”

“I see you are embarrassing me. I have heard so many compliments about myself but no one has said it like you before. Thank you for the compliment.”

“This man knows the magic of words.” ( Jaden said to himself)

“May I come in, sir!” said the assistant. He brought coffee for both of them.

“Yes, come in.”

“Here is the coffee sir. I'm putting it on the table.”

“Yeah. By the way, did you bring me my black coffee?”

“Of course, sir. How would I forget!”

“ OK, that’s great, Joe.”

The assistant left the room. Bill and Jayden resumed their conversation over coffee.

“So Mr. Bill, which hospital are you working in?”

“ I’m now in the Bayhealth Community Hospital, as a ‘Medicine Specialist’.”

“ Bayhealth Community Hospital? That’s a famous hospital in New York. So, why did you come to Florida & choose me? You can choose a detective from New York.”

“That’s the point! The mission I am going to give you is based in Florida. I was looking for the best detective in Florida, and after hearing about you, I thought you would be the perfect fit for the mission I'm going to give you.”

“Ok, I understand. So tell me without further delay what responsibility you want to give me.”

“Okay. I want you to spy on someone. I want you to give me all the news about her, what she does, where she goes, who she is with, everything in a word.”

“She? It means I have to spy on a girl?”

“Yeah. You’re right.”

“I don’t spy on anyone like that. First you have to tell me why you want to spy on the girl? Because I will do the spying only if it seems logical to me, not if it is not logical. I hope you understand.”

“Yeah, of course. You’ll find my cause logical. I’m going to tell you everything.”

Bill was telling Jayden his false stories made by himself. He knew that if he were to be in a situation like this, the detective would ask him why he should spy on someone. That’s why he made a false cause.

“What can I tell you? My life is in vain. My father had two weddings. I am the child of his first wife. Father’s second wife could not tolerate me and my mother at all. She didn't want me & my mom to live under the same roof. So she started plotting against me and my mother.”

“She always used to create conflict between my parents. She created misconceptions about us in my father’s mind. That’s why he started to hate us. She even trickly transferred the property in my name to her daughter. But that’s not enough for her. At least one day, my father understood that all those times, she played tricks with him.”

“My father realized that that woman had lied to him in our names for so long time. He couldn’t tolerate that. So, he decided to divorce his second wife. After one month, my father divorced that woman.”

Bill took a break. He took the glass which was full of water & started to drink water.

“So, you’re meaning that I have to spy on your dad’s ex-wife?”

“No, she’s not the target. Someone else!”

“Someone else! Then who is the target?”

“Her daughter.”

“Her daughter! Why her daughter? What did her daughter do to you?”

“She is messing up my life! She’s taking revenge because my father divorced her mother. She threatened me she’ll destroy my career. She even threatened to kill me!”

“Oh my God! That’s dangerous! Revenge is the most dangerous thing existing in this world.”

“Yeah! That’s why I came to you. I want you to spy on her with all of your effort & give me updates about her from time to time so I can analyze her activities.”

“ Does she live in Florida?”

“Yes. She lives here. Wait, I’ll give you all of the necessary information about her to make your work easier.”

Bill opened his bag. He took out a file from his bag. The file contained all the information about Angela and a picture of Angela. He gave that file to Jayden. Suddenly, Bill’s phone rang. Bill received the call. Jayden thought,

“What a manners-less person! He didn’t feel it necessary to get permission before answering the call. He thinks that he owns the whole world!”

Bill hung up the call after talking for about 10 minutes. His friend asks him to go back to New York for an emergency.

“Mr. Jayden, actually I got an emergency. My friend needs me in New York. I’ll come back tomorrow or Tuesday. Till then you check all the information in that file. I’ll come back again & I’ll tell you about the payment & starting the mission.”

“Okay, okay. I have no problem. You take your time. Have a great day Mr. Bill.”

“You too. Don’t forget to check the file. I also dropped a picture of that girl in the file.”

“Okay. I understand.”

Bill hurriedly left the detective's office. After getting into the car, he started to whisper,

“Angela, you conspired in my name to frame me. You wanted to take revenge on me, didn’t you? Now you’ll see how I’m going to trap you. I’ll trap you in such a complicated way that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Ah- ha-ha…”

Angela’s Home:

Angela was so happy. It was Andrew’s birthday. She was in a chilled mood. She was making a birthday cake in the kitchen.

“Today I’ll make the best birthday cake for Andrew. He’ll be very surprised. But what if he appears now?” Angela was little bit confused.

Angela was baking a cake for Andrew with so much happiness and interest. Just then, Angela heard her phone’s ring tone. She picked up her phone & saw that Bill was calling her. Angela became silent & agitated. She received the call,

“Hello.”

“Hello Angela. How are you?”

Angela was having goosebumps when she heard ‘how are you?’ from Bill. She was stuttering,

“I… I’m alright. How… how about you?”

“ I’m also doing well, but I’m really busy. I think I need one more month to meet with you.”

“Oh, is that so? OK, I’m also busy with my work. Take your time.”

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.”

Angela finished talking & quickly ran upstairs. She entered her room & looked for her medicine. She found it on the side table of her bed. She took her pills & laid down on the bed.

“Ohhh…This man will never give me peace! There is a strange poison in his words that spreads throughout my body when I hear his voice. i***t!”

“Lately, I see that my mental illness is not being controlled even with this medicine. What should I do? I do not understand anything. But I don’t want to be sober again. This may reduce my desire for revenge, which I will never allow.”

“By the way, I should focus on Andrew’s birthday now, to make this day super special.”

Angela again went to the kitchen & gave her attention to baking the cake. She mixed all the ingredients & put them into the oven. Later, she decorated the cake with so much love. The cake looked amazing. Angela couldn’t have been happier.

“Wow! I just can’t believe I made this cake. I’m just imagining how surprised Andrew will be!”

Angela kept the cake in the fridge. Then she was preparing things to decorate the house. She brought a large amount of balloons & more decorative materials from the store. She was doing her best to decorate the house gorgeously. But her only tension was about Andrew.

“There’s still so many decorations to do. But what about Andrew? If he appears now, all the surprises will be revealed.”

Angela decorated all the rooms one by one. The house looked so amazing. Especially the living room, it was full of pink & blue balloons.

“Wow! Everything is perfect! It’s exactly the same look that I imagined. But why isn't Andrew appearing today? What happened?

Angela was a little worried about Andrew. Just then a light cold wind blew. Angela began to feel Andrew’s existence.

“What was that? Is Andrew here? Andrew…Andrew…”

But Andrew didn’t appear. Angela was so confused about Andrew. Later, she thought it was her imagination & she again went to her room. Angela was standing in front of the mirror.

“Oh no! I look so gross! Today I have to look prettier than ever. After all, it’s my Andrew's birthday, of course, I have to look pretty & gorgeous.”

“I think I should go to the salon to do my hair nicely and put on a little makeup.”

Angela picked up her purse & phone. She left the house to go to the salon. Andrew was invisibly standing beside the main door & watching Angela. Andrew was laughing at Angela's cute craziness.

“Oh my God! She is such a sweet & naive girl. Where has she been hiding for so long? If she had come into my life while I was alive, my life would have been heaven.”

Actually, Andrew was with Angela & saw everything. He kept himself invisible. He secretly watched Angela as she made all the arrangements for his birthday. That’s why Angela felt that Andrew was with her. Andrew was walking all over the house. He liked the way of decorating the house. He never saw such beautiful decorations on his birthday.

“How beautiful the house looks! She is such a talented girl. I always wanted to decorate my house like this on my birthday.”

“But how did she know my birthday? Hmm… whatever! The main thing is she’s doing all these things for me. I should have gone now & wait until Angela calls me.”

Andrew disappeared from Angela’s house. On the other hand, Angela had reached the salon to prepare herself. She entered.

“Hello, miss. Welcome to our salon.”

“Hi, thank you.”

“So, what do you want to do, miss?”

“I have a party tonight. So, I want my hair & makeup done. Not very gorgeous, just a simple but glamorous look.”

“Okay, miss. I understand what you say. Come into this room. First, we have done your hair.”

Angela went to the room. They shampooed Angela’s hair first. Then they did a light hair spa. The girls even blow dried her hair. After that, they styled her hair. They curled her hair and teased it to make it look long and silky.

After that, the girls made Angela up. They took Angela to the makeup room. First, they applied foundation to Angela’s face, then applied light eyeshadow to her eyes. They put lipstick on her lips and lip gloss. They put mascara on her eyelashes and highlighted her brown eyes. They even put perfume on her. Angela was beautiful!

“We’re all done, miss. Just take a look in the mirror.”

Angela looked in the mirror. She was surprised at her new appearance.

“Oh my gosh! It’s beautiful. I didn’t recognize myself. This is exactly the same look that I imagined. Thank you guys so much.”

"You're welcome miss."

Angela left the salon and got into her car again. A bouquet of flowers remains to be picked up for Andrew. Angela looked on Google Maps to see if there was a flower shop nearby. Angela saw that there was a flower shop about a kilometer away from the salon.

Angela stopped the car in front of the flower shop. There are many types of beautiful flowers arranged in the shop. Angela loves flowers because flowers symbolize beauty, purity and peace.

“How pure & beautiful these flowers are! I feel like I bought all the flowers in the whole shop.”

Angela saw a beautiful bouquet of all kinds of flowers arranged together. She liked it very much, and decided to buy the bouquet. She called the store owner.

“Excuse me! How much is it for that bouquet? I really like that.”

“That one? That’s 25$.”

“ OK, I will take them. Here is your money."

“Here is your change. Hope you have a great day.”

“Thanks. You too.”

Angela was tension free. All of the main things for the celebration were done. Angela was excited about the celebration. She hurried home.

Birthday Night:

Angela was waiting for the clock to strike twelve. Everything was ready, only Andrew had to go. Angela was getting impatient.

“Uhh… When will it strike twelve? There are still five minutes left. I can’t wait anymore!”

Angela got up from the chair and started walking. Her heels were making a clicking sound. Andrew’s favorite color was blue, so Angela wore a blue party gown.

It was twelve o’clock. Angela started calling Andrew’s name loudly.

“Andrew… Andrew, my love.”

Andrew appeared in a few seconds. As always, Andrew was mesmerized by Angela’s beauty. He was lost in Angela's beauty, he was lost in the world of love. He came back to this world after hearing Angela's call.

“Baby… baby, what happened? You don’t like the dress? Don’t I look beautiful?”

“You look stunning, absolutely stunning. As always.” Andrew looked at Angela with a glance.

“Really! Thank you, baby. Now please close your eyes, I have a surprise for you.”

“A surprise, again? What is it this time?”

“Well, you’ll see. Just close your eyes.”

Andrew closed his eyes. Angela took him to the living room.

“Now… open your eyes.”

Andrew opened his eyes & he started pretending not to know anything.

“Wow, Angela is this…”

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY LOVE” Angela gave Andrew the flower bouquet.

“Oh my God, Angela! Really? All of this is for my birthday?”

“Yes, my love. I made all of these arrangements myself, just for you.”

“This is amazing. I always wanted to do something like this on my birthday. Thank you so much baby. But how would you know that today was my birthday?”

“Well, let’s just say it’s my sharp eyes. When you gave me your family photo, I noticed that someone had written your date of birth on the back of the photo. So, I have come to know from that.”

“Smart girl! Come on, let’s cut the cake.”

Andrew & Angela cut the cake together. Angela was singing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song. Andrew grabbed a slice of the cake and fed Angela. But when Angela was about to feed Andrew, she came back to real life. Andrew couldn’t eat or drink because he was a spirit.

“Oh, I forgot that you can’t eat.” Angela said slowly. She was in shock.

“Hey, baby. Don’t be upset. I can’t eat, but there is no problem. The fact is that you have done so much for me, that’s a lot for me.”

“But I made the cake with love. I thought that I fed you the cake & you'd enjoy it. But I…

Angela became so upset. Andrew became emotional too. If he was alive, he would have been able to eat the cake & make Angela happy. But he couldn’t. Andrew realized that he had made a big mistake by taking his own life.

“Angela baby, please, it’s my birthday. Don’t be sad. I know it’s hard for you. I just realize now that I made a big mistake by taking my own life. I should have been patient, should have waited. It wasn’t fair to end life like this. I’m sorry.”

“No, no. Please, baby, don’t apologize. Please don’t feel guilty. It’s not your fault. If I were in your situation I would’ve done the same thing.”

“You know what, you make me so happy. I always wanted to celebrate my birthday with my parents & siblings in a very big house that would be very nicely decorated. Especially when I was a kid, I wanted it very much. But I couldn’t afford it. But you fulfilled that wish too. I owe you Angela.”

“What? You owe me? No baby, there is no owing in love. I did all these things for you with love.”

“Ok I understand baby.

“But what about the cake & the food? What should I do with them, baby?”

“Hmm… actually, I have a great idea. Why don’t you give all this food & cake to the homeless people? They’ll really appreciate it. What do you think?”

“Wow, that’s really a great idea! Thank you Andrew. You’re the best!”

“Now shall we do some dance moves?” Andrew extended his hand to Angela.

“Of course. I would love to do it.”

Angela & Andrew forgot their emotions & began to dance for joy. As always, they seemed like a sweet couple. They became so romantic while dancing. They gave kisses to each other. They dived into the ocean of love, where there was only love and happiness.

But that day left a scar on Angela’s mind. Andrew could not even eat the food he had prepared because he was not alive. The wound in her heart became fresher. This makes Angela even more motivated to get revenge on Bill.

The Twist:

Jayden finished reading that novel he was stuck with. He felt so pleased.

“Finally, I finished reading the whole book. The whole book was very exciting. Mysteries & thrillers, it was perfect in one word.”

Jayden left the couch. He was going to the kitchen to bring dinner, right then Bill called him. He went back to the living room & answered the phone.

“Hello, Mr. Bill. How’s everything going?”

“Hello, Mr. Jayden. Well, things are a little complicated here. Maybe I will come back on Thursday. I’ll meet you on Friday. Until then, you check the file & you prepare yourself to start the mission.”

“Yeah, alright. See you on Friday.”

Jayden hung up the phone. He was having his dinner fast because after dinner he had to check what important information was in that file. After finishing dinner, Jayden went to his room. He took out the file from the cupboard. The file was wrapped in an envelope. Jayden unwrapped it.

There was a big twist in that file, which was waiting for Jayden. He opened the file. He turned over the first page & he was checking the information about the girl whom he had to spy on.

Jayden was reading the biography.

“ Name: Angela Mulgannon

"Wait what? Angela Mulgannon? Jayden was confused. He started reading the information ahead.”

Age: 25

Birthday: 27 December, 1985

Religion: Christian

Father: Roger Mulgannon

Mother: Stacy Johnson (Mulgannon)

Jayden was totally sure that this girl was the Angela he was thinking about. All the information matches perfectly. Her name, her parents' names & her birthday, everything was the same. He was shocked. Right then, Angela's picture fell from the file on the ground to make him more clear about Angela. Jayden looked at the ground & took a picture.

“Yes! She is Angela. Angela Mulgannon, my elementary school & middle school best friend. Blue eyes, thick black hair, pinky skin, she is my Angela.”

Jayden took Angela’s photo and stared at it. He went to another world. Angela’s beauty attracted him so much.

“I can’t believe it. You were so beautiful before. Now, you have become even more beautiful.” Jayden was talking with Angela’s photo.

Jayden and Angela have been friends for a long time. Angela & Jayden have been friends since they were in elementary school in Texas. Jayden & Angela were very close. He knew about Angela’s mental disorder.

Jayden has had a crush on Angela since middle school. Friendship gradually turns into love in Jayden's mind. . He wanted to tell Angela his feelings about her many times, he wanted to say that he loved Angela but never had the courage.

But in his mind, Jayden decided that when he got to high school, he would tell Angela about his feelings. After a few years, when Jayden & Angela were admitted to high school, Jayden and his entire family had to move to Florida due to his dad’s job. He was very disappointed. Jayden couldn’t believe that he was getting separated from Angela. Angela became really upset too because she had to say goodbye to her best friend.

Jayden decided to talk to Angela about his feelings on his last day of school. He took a promise from Angela.

“Angela, you have to promise me something.”

“A promise? About what?”

“Tomorrow will be my last day of school. Then I’ll never see you again. I have something special to tell you. Promise me that no matter what, tomorrow you’ll come to school. If you don’t come, I’ll never talk to you.”

“Are you kidding! Of course I’ll come tomorrow. I promise.”

Angela gave a promise to Jayden. It was pouring that day.

“Wow, it’s pouring. Come Jayden, let’s enjoy the pouring.”

“No, Angela. Come here. You’ll be sick & miss school tomorrow.”

“Please Jayden! It’s our last day. We should enjoy it. Please.”

“Ok, I’m coming.”

Jayden & Angela enjoyed the rain. They both got wet in the rain when they were on the way home. Jayden was well but Angela got really sick. Angela's fever increased during the night. Because of it, she wasn’t able to go to school the next day or even able to go to his house to say goodbye to him. Jayden was devastated. He wanted to tell Angela that he loved her but his luck wasn’t with him.

Jayden was so angry with Angela because he told Angela that she'd be sick, but Angela didn’t listen to him. From that day on, Jayden decided to never contact Angela again and he'd forget that he loved Angela.

Even after all these things had happened in the past, after a long time, it made Jayden’s heart filled with joy seeing Angela’s picture. Jayden was more attracted to Angela than ever. Old love was knocking at the door again. Jayden started to feel a renewed love for Angela.

“Oh my Angela! How pretty you are! Enough is enough! I can’t hold my anger at you anymore. I want to love you again Angela, I want to love you so much.”

Just as Jayden was busy fantasizing about Angela, the phone rang again. Jayden returned to the real world. He was anoxic.

“This is ridiculous! I need a break, man!”

Jayden saw that Bill was calling him again. He answered the phone with annoyance inside.

“Yes, Mr. Bill. Tell me.”

“Mr. Jayden, I want to tell you that I just finished my work & I’m coming to Florida on tonight’s flight. Shall we meet tomorrow?”

“Yeah, of course. The sooner we start this mission, it’ll be the better for us.”

“Right you are! OK, I’ll come tomorrow at 10 o’clock morning.”

“Sure. I’m waiting to start this mission eagerly.”

The call ended. Jayden recognized Bill.

“Oh so he was Angela's stepbrother, whom she talked about. The cause of Angela’s mental disorder. What a clever man! He lied to me and got away with it. He lied to me that Angela was conspiring with him. This person is plotting in the name of Angela! I have to take this case quickly, or Angela will be in more trouble if Bill gives the mission to another detective.”

“Plus! I can meet & stay close to Angela if I started this mission. This mission will be very lucky for me. My dear Angela, I’m coming. Be ready for me!”

Jayden was eagerly waiting to meet with Angela. Either way, Jayden has to take this mission. It’s very important to him. Even if Bill would pay him less for his mission, he would still go on this mission.
