The Night I Met The Devil
Elena Rose hated rainy days.
Not because of the weather itself, but because rain always seemed to bring trouble.
Standing beneath the university library's entrance, she adjusted her backpack and sighed as she stared at the dark sky.
"Great. Just great."
The rain had started earlier than expected.
Her best friend, Mia, had already left an hour ago, leaving Elena alone to finish her assignment.
Now the campus was nearly empty.
Most students had rushed home.
Elena opened her umbrella and stepped into the rain.
Cold droplets danced against the pavement as she walked toward the bus stop.
Her mind was occupied with upcoming exams, overdue bills, and the part-time job she needed to keep.
Life wasn't easy.
But she preferred it that way.
Simple.
Predictable.
Safe.
If only she had known this would be the last normal night of her life.
A sharp voice suddenly echoed from a nearby alley.
"Find it. Now."
Elena froze.
The voice wasn't loud.
Yet something about it made her uneasy.
Curiosity tugged at her.
Slowly, she moved closer.
The alley connected to an old parking area behind a luxury hotel.
From behind a concrete pillar, she carefully peeked around the corner.
Several men in black suits stood in the rain.
Their expensive cars lined the parking lot.
And in the center stood a tall man dressed entirely in black.
The moment Elena saw him, she understood who was truly in charge.
Nobody spoke without permission.
Nobody moved unless he moved first.
Even from a distance, his presence was intimidating.
One of the suited men handed him a folder.
The mysterious stranger flipped through it calmly.
Then his cold voice cut through the rain.
"Who leaked this information?"
Nobody answered.
The silence was terrifying.
Elena should have left.
She knew that.
But before she could step away, her foot slipped against the wet ground.
Crash.
A metal can rolled across the pavement.
Every head turned toward her.
Elena's heart nearly stopped.
"Oh no."
The suited men instantly moved.
Within seconds, they surrounded her.
"Who are you?" one demanded.
"I'm a student!" Elena replied quickly. "I wasn't spying."
The men exchanged suspicious looks.
Then the stranger finally stepped forward.
For the first time, Elena saw his face clearly.
Sharp features.
Cold gray eyes.
An expression completely devoid of warmth.
He looked less like a man and more like a storm disguised as one.
His gaze settled on her.
"What did you see?"
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Elena swallowed.
"Nothing."
A corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
"You hesitate when you lie."
The accusation annoyed her immediately.
"Excuse me?"
His eyebrow rose.
"You heard me."
Elena crossed her arms despite her nervousness.
"And you seem very confident for someone interrogating a random student in a parking lot."
Several men looked horrified.
Nobody spoke to their boss that way.
The stranger studied her carefully.
Unlike everyone else around him, this girl wasn't terrified.
At least not enough to stay silent.
"What is your name?" he asked.
"Why?"
The men looked ready to faint.
The stranger's eyes narrowed.
"Answer the question."
"No."
The word slipped out before Elena could stop herself.
Rain continued falling between them.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then, surprisingly, the stranger almost smiled.
Almost.
"You have courage."
"Or common sense," Elena shot back. "Something tells me nobody ever disagrees with you."
A dangerous silence followed.
Then the stranger finally spoke.
"Adrian Valerio."
The name meant nothing to Elena.
But judging from everyone else's reaction, it clearly should have.
"Okay," Elena said. "Nice to meet you, Adrian Valerio."
The men looked stunned.
Adrian simply stared at her.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Most people reacted with fear.
This woman reacted with annoyance.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the biggest problem.
Because someone else had already seen her.
A black SUV sat across the street.
Hidden in the shadows.
Watching.
Waiting.
And inside the vehicle, a man raised a camera.
Click.
A photo of Elena appeared on the screen.
A cold smile spread across his face.
"Found her."
Unaware of the danger approaching, Elena tightened her grip on her umbrella.
The night was only beginning.
And somewhere in the darkness, someone had already decided she needed to disappear
Elena had no idea that a photograph of her was already being sent across the city.
She glanced at her phone.
9:47 PM.
Mia had texted her six times.
Mia: Are you alive?
Mia: Don't tell me you're still studying.
Mia: Call me.
Elena quickly typed a reply.
Elena: Relax. I'm fine.
She slipped her phone into her pocket and started walking away.
Behind her, Adrian Valerio watched silently.
Something felt wrong.
He couldn't explain it.
Years of surviving in his world had taught him to trust his instincts.
And right now, his instincts were screaming.
"Follow her."
One of his men blinked.
"Sir?"
"Discreetly."
The man immediately nodded.
"Yes, sir."
Adrian's eyes remained fixed on Elena's disappearing figure.
Most people would have forgotten her by now.
But he couldn't.
Not because she was beautiful.
Not because she was brave.
Because she was a problem.
A problem he didn't understand yet.
---
Meanwhile, Elena walked toward the bus stop.
The rain had become lighter.
The city lights reflected on the wet streets.
Everything looked normal.
Almost.
Then she noticed it.
A black SUV parked across the road.
Its engine was running.
The windows were tinted.
As she passed by, the vehicle slowly began moving.
Following her.
Elena frowned.
Maybe it was a coincidence.
She crossed the street.
The SUV crossed too.
Her heartbeat quickened.
No.
Definitely not a coincidence.
She pulled out her phone and pretended to scroll while secretly checking the reflection in a shop window.
The SUV remained behind her.
Following.
Watching.
A cold feeling settled in her stomach.
---
Inside the SUV, a man stared at Elena's photograph.
"That's her."
The driver nodded.
"The boss wants her?"
"Alive."
The man smiled darkly.
"For now."
---
Elena immediately changed direction.
She entered a crowded convenience store.
The SUV continued driving past.
She released a breath.
Maybe she was imagining things.
Maybe—
Her phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a familiar voice.
"Don't leave the store."
Elena froze.
"Who is this?"
"You already know."
Her eyes widened.
Adrian.
"How did you get my number?"
"That is the least important question right now."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Listen carefully."
Elena's grip tightened around her phone.
"There are people looking for you."
Her pulse quickened.
"What?"
"You were seen tonight."
"I don't understand."
"I know."
For the first time, Adrian sounded slightly impatient.
"Stay inside until my men arrive."
Elena almost laughed.
"Your men?"
"Yes."
"No."
The answer came instantly.
"I'm not trusting strangers."
"You already trusted your luck."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means you're in danger, Elena."
The way he said her name sent an unexpected chill through her.
Not fear.
Something else.
Something she couldn't explain.
---
Outside the convenience store, two men stepped out of a vehicle.
Neither looked like customers.
Both scanned the area.
Searching.
For her.
Elena's stomach dropped.
One of the men pulled out his phone and compared something on the screen.
Her photograph.
The same photograph taken earlier.
"Oh my God."
The realization hit her instantly.
Someone really was hunting her.
And suddenly Adrian's warning didn't sound crazy anymore.
"Look outside," Adrian said quietly through the phone.
Elena stared through the glass.
The men were approaching.
Her hands began shaking.
"What do I do?"
A pause.
Then Adrian answered.
"Now you trust me."
The store's front door opened.
One of the men stepped inside.
Elena's heart nearly stopped.
"Sir," the man said to the cashier, "we're looking for someone."
Another entered behind him.
Their eyes scanned the room.
Closer.
Closer.
Closer.
Until one of them spotted her.
"There she is."
Fear exploded through Elena's body.
"Back exit," Adrian ordered.
"Now."
Without thinking, Elena ran.
She pushed through the rear door and burst into the rainy alley behind the store.
Footsteps followed.
Fast.
Too fast.
She heard shouting behind her.
Then a black luxury car suddenly stopped beside her.
The rear door opened.
A man in a black suit stepped out.
"Miss Rose."
Elena stopped.
"What?"
"Mr. Valerio sent us."
More footsteps echoed from behind.
The men chasing her were getting closer.
She turned.
Then back to the suited man.
For the first time that night, she faced a choice.
Trust Adrian Valerio.
Or trust the strangers trying to catch her.
And neither option felt safe.
The suited man extended his hand.
"We have to leave. Now."
A shout came from the end of the alley.
"There!"
Elena looked toward the approaching men.
Then toward the waiting car.
Then back again.
Her heart pounded violently.
She had spent her entire life avoiding trouble.
Yet somehow, in a single night, trouble had found her.
And it had Adrian Valerio's name written all over it.
Taking a deep breath, Elena stepped toward the car.
The door slammed shut behind her.
The vehicle sped away into the darkness.
She didn't know where she was going.
She didn't know who she could trust.
But one thing had become painfully clear.
Her ordinary life was over..
