Lily stared at the screen, her hands trembling as the weight of Emma’s words settled over her. He said he has feelings for someone else. The reality of the situation hit her with full force leaving her breathless. It wasn’t just that Ethan had broken things off with Emma; it was that he had told her the truth, laid bare his feelings for someone else, someone who happened to be Lily. Her mind raced with thoughts of what Emma must be feeling at that moment. She could imagine the shock and confusion in her friend’s eyes, the disbelief and heartbreak as the truth settled in. Emma had been so certain that things were going well with Ethan. She had believed he was the one. And now, her world had been shattered. Lily’s phone buzzed again, pulling her from her thoughts. Another message from Emma. Emma: He didn’t say who… but I think I know. The knot in Lily’s stomach tightened. She couldn’t bring herself to reply, couldn’t even find the words to comfort her friend when the truth was so devastating. Instead, she sat there, frozen in place, her heart aching with guilt and sorrow. How had things gotten so out of hand? She had never wanted this. She had tried to stay out of it, to let Emma have her chance at happiness with Ethan. But now, it seemed like everything had spiraled beyond her control. As Lily sat there, staring at her phone, the weight of her emotions pressing down on her, a knock at the door startled her. Her heart leapt in her chest, and for a moment, she wondered if it was Ethan. But when she opened the door, she was met with a sight that made her stomach drop. It was Emma. Her friend stood in the doorway, her eyes red and swollen from crying, her face a mixture of anger, hurt, and betrayal. Lily’s heart clenched as she took in the sight of her, and she instinctively stepped back, her mind reeling. “Emma…” Lily whispered, her voice barely audible. Emma’s eyes narrowed as she crossed her arms over her chest. “It’s you, isn’t it?” The question hung in the air between them, heavy and charged with emotion. Lily felt the walls closing in around her, the weight of the truth bearing down on her shoulders. She wanted to deny it, wanted to tell Emma that she was wrong, that it wasn’t her—but she couldn’t.The truth was too obvious now, and there was no point in pretending. “I… I didn’t mean for this to happen,” Lily said, her voice shaking with emotion. “I never wanted to come between you two.” Emma’s lips trembled, and for a moment, Lily thought she might break down into tears again. But instead, her friend took a deep breath, her expression hardening. “How long have you had feelings for him?” Emma asked, her voice laced with pain. Lily opened her mouth to respond, but the words stuck in her throat. How could she explain the complicated mess of emotions she had been feeling for weeks? How could she justify something that felt so wrong, even if it had been beyond her control? “I don’t know,” Lily admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “It just… happened.” Emma shook her head, her eyes filled with hurt. “You should have told me, Lily. I’m your best friend. I deserved to know.” “I didn’t want to hurt you,” Lily said, her voice thick with emotion. “I didn’t want to ruin what you had with Ethan. That’s why I didn’t say anything.” “Well, guess what? It’s ruined now,” Emma snapped, her voice rising with anger. “Ethan broke up with me because of you. Because he has feelings for you.” Lily flinched at the harshness of her words, guilt washing over her in waves. She had always known this moment might come, but she hadn’t realized how devastating it would be until now. “I’m so sorry, Emma,” Lily whispered, her voice cracking. “I never wanted this. I never wanted to hurt you.” Emma let out a bitter laugh, tears welling up in her eyes. “Well, you did. You hurt me more than anyone ever has.” The silence between them was deafening, the tension thick and suffocating. Lily wanted to reach out, to comfort her friend, to explain that she hadn’t meant for any of this to happen. But there were no words that could fix the damage that had been done. “I thought I could trust you,” Emma said, her voice shaking with emotion. “I thought you were my friend.” “I am your friend,” Lily said desperately, tears welling up in her own eyes. “I didn’t want this, Emma. I didn’t ask for it.” Emma shook her head, her face twisted with betrayal. “Maybe not, but you let it happen. You let him fall for you, and now you’re both responsible for breaking my heart.” Lily’s throat tightened, and she struggled to find the right words. “Emma, please… I didn’t mean for this to happen. I—” “Just stop,” Emma interrupted, her voice cold and sharp. “I don’t want to hear it anymore.” Lily’s heart shattered at her friend’s words, and she felt tears streaming down her face. Emma had always been the person she could rely on, the one person who had always been there for her. And now, because of her feelings for Ethan, she had lost that friendship. “Is this what you wanted?” Emma asked, her voice breaking. “Did you want him all along?” “No!” Lily cried, her voice trembling. “I didn’t even realize how I felt until it was too late.” Emma stared at her, her eyes filled with a mixture of disbelief and pain. “Well, now it’s too late for all of us.” With those words, Emma turned and walked away, leaving Lily standing in the doorway, her heart aching with the weight of everything she had lost. As the door closed behind her, Lily collapsed onto the floor, burying her face in her hands as sobs wracked her body. She had never felt so broken, so helpless. She had tried to do the right thing, had tried to keep her feelings for Ethan buried, but in the end, it hadn’t been enough. Now, she had lost her best friend, and any chance she might have had with Ethan felt tainted by the pain they had caused. For hours, Lily sat on the floor, her body numb and her mind spinning with guilt and regret. She didn’t know how to fix this, didn’t know if there even was a way to fix it. The damage had been done, and no matter how much she wished she could go back and change things, she couldn’t. Days passed, and the distance between Lily and Emma grew even wider. Emma stopped responding to her texts, and the once frequent phone calls and meetups came to a screeching halt. Every time Lily thought about reaching out, the fear of being rejected again held her back. She was losing Emma, and with each passing day, it felt more permanent. At work, Lily threw herself into projects, staying late at the office and accepting every new assignment that came her way. But no matter how hard she tried to bury herself in her job, the hollow ache in her chest never went away. She didn’t hear from Ethan either. Part of her was relieved, his absence gave her time to sort through her own feelings, to figure out what she wanted. But another part of her longed for him, missed the connection they had shared. Even though things between them were complicated and painful, she couldn’t deny the feelings she had for him. It was a mess. Her life, her relationships, everything was falling apart. And no matter how hard she tried to fix things, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had already lost everything that mattered most.
