Lily spent the next few days trying her best to distance herself from Ethan and Emma. She threw herself into work, attending meetings and networking events with renewed focus, determined to push her personal feelings aside. But no matter how hard she tried to distract herself, thoughts of Ethan lingered in the back of her mind, like a shadow she couldn’t shake.
Every time Emma texted her with updates about their relationship whether it was about their romantic weekend getaway or the thoughtful things Ethan did for her,Lily forced herself to respond with enthusiasm even though each message felt like a tiny dagger to her heart. She wanted to be happy for her friend, truly she did but the more she heard about how close Emma and Ethan were getting, the more her internal conflict grew.
She couldn’t deny the depth of her feelings for Ethan. She had tried, had convinced herself it was just a fleeting crush, but every time she saw him, every time they spoke, the connection felt undeniable. It wasn’t just physical attraction,it was something deeper, something that tugged at her soul in a way that scared her but how could she ever act on those feelings when doing so would destroy Emma?
One evening, after a particularly exhausting day at work, Lily returned to her penthouse apartment and collapsed onto the couch, staring blankly at the city lights twinkling outside her window. Her phone buzzed with a new text, and she glanced at the screen to see it was from Emma.
Emma: Guess what? Ethan surprised me with a dinner reservation at the most romantic restaurant in town tonight. I feel like I’m living in a dream!
Lily sighed, her chest tightening. She quickly typed out a response, knowing that Emma was probably already bubbling with excitement.
Lily: That sounds amazing, Em! Have the best time. Can’t wait to hear all about it.
As soon as she hit send, she tossed her phone onto the coffee table and leaned back against the cushions, closing her eyes. She needed to stop torturing herself like this. Emma was clearly falling for Ethan, and the more serious their relationship became, the more painful it would be for Lily to hold onto her feelings.
But no matter how many times she told herself to let go, she couldn’t. Something about Ethan drew her in and the connection they had was undeniable. She had never felt this way about anyone before, and that only made the situation more unbearable.
After a few minutes of silence, Lily’s phone buzzed again. She groaned, expecting another excited message from Emma, but when she glanced at the screen, her breath caught in her throat.
It wasn’t from Emma.
It was from Ethan.
Ethan: Hey, are you free to talk? There’s something I need to get off my chest.
Lily stared at the message, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew she should ignore it, that responding would only make things more complicated, but her fingers seemed to have a mind of their own as they typed out a reply.
Lily: Sure. What’s up?
A few seconds later, her phone buzzed again with Ethan’s response.
Ethan: I don’t want to do this over text. Can we meet?
Lily hesitated, her heart racing. She knew meeting him was a bad idea, nothing good could come from it, not when she was already struggling to suppress her feelings for him. But the curiosity, the desire to know what was weighing on his mind, was too strong to ignore.
After a moment of deliberation, she texted back.
Lily: Okay. Where?
Half an hour later, Lily found herself sitting at a small, quiet bar on the edge of town, nursing a glass of wine as she waited for Ethan to arrive. She had chosen the place because it was far from the bustling parts of the city they usually frequented,a spot where they wouldn’t be seen by anyone who might recognize them. The last thing she wanted was for Emma to hear about this.
Her heart was pounding as she waited, and she couldn’t stop replaying Ethan’s message in her head. What could he possibly want to talk about? Part of her feared that he would confess feelings for her, and though a part of her longed for that, another part was terrified of what that would mean.
The door to the bar opened, and she looked up to see Ethan walking in. His eyes found hers immediately, and he made his way over to her with a look of determination on his face. As he approached, Lily’s pulse quickened, and she forced herself to stay calm.
“Hey,” Ethan said softly as he slid into the seat across from her.
“Hey,” Lily replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
For a moment, they sat in silence, the tension between them palpable. Finally, Ethan spoke.
“I’m sorry to spring this on you,” he said, his voice low and serious. “But I needed to talk to you. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what happened the other day… at the cafe.”
Lily’s heart skipped a beat, and she looked down at her glass, avoiding his gaze. “Ethan, I don’t think—”
“Just hear me out,” he interrupted, leaning forward. “I know you’re close with Emma. I know you don’t want to come between us. But I can’t ignore what I’m feeling. There’s something between us, Lily. You feel it too, don’t you?”
Lily’s breath caught in her throat, and she forced herself to meet his gaze. His blue eyes were intense, filled with a mixture of longing and frustration and she could see the struggle in them, the same struggle she had been battling for weeks.
“I don’t know what to say,” she whispered. “Of course, I feel something. But Emma…”
Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I care about Emma. She’s amazing, and I don’t want to hurt her. But the more time I spend with her, the more I realize that I can’t give her what she deserves. Not when I’m thinking about you.”
The words hung in the air between them, heavy and loaded with meaning. Lily’s mind raced, her heart aching with the weight of the situation. She had never wanted to be in this position,to be the cause of pain for her best friend. But now, here they were, and there was no easy way out.
“Ethan, we can’t do this,” Lily said softly, though her voice trembled with emotion. “Emma doesn’t deserve to be hurt. You have to figure out what you want, and if it’s not her… you need to tell her.”
Ethan nodded, his jaw tight. “I know. You’re right. I just… I don’t want to lose you.”
Lily’s heart ached at his words, and for a moment, she was tempted to throw caution to the wind, to give in to the feelings she had been suppressing for so long. But then she thought of Emma—her best friend, the one person who had always been there for her, through thick and thin. She couldn’t betray her like this.
“We can’t be together, Ethan,” Lily said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Not like this.”
Ethan stared at her for a long moment, the pain in his eyes clear. Finally, he nodded, though his expression was filled with regret.
“I understand,” he said quietly. “But I need to be honest with Emma. She deserves to know the truth.”
Lily’s chest tightened, and she nodded slowly. “Yes, she does.”
They sat in silence for a while longer, the weight of the conversation hanging heavy between them. Finally, Ethan stood up, his movements slow and deliberate.
“I’ll talk to her,” he said, his voice resigned. “I just… I’m sorry, Lily. For everything.”
Lily nodded, her throat tight with emotion. “Me too.”
Ethan hesitated for a moment, as if he wanted to say something more, but then he turned and walked away, leaving Lily alone at the table, her heart heavy with the knowledge that nothing would ever be the same again.
The next day, Lily woke up to a text from Emma.
Emma: Ethan wants to talk to me later. I think it’s serious. I’m kind of freaking out. Do you think everything’s okay?
Lily stared at the message, her heart sinking. She knew what was coming, and the thought of Emma’s heartbreak made her stomach twist with guilt. But what could she say? How could she prepare her friend for the truth?
After a moment of hesitation, she typed out a reply.
Lily: I’m sure everything will work out. Just be honest with him, and he’ll be honest with you.
As she hit send, Lily felt a wave of sadness wash over her. No matter what happened next, things were about to change. She just hoped that, somehow, they could all find a way to heal from the hurt that was bound to follow.
Later that evening, as Lily sat in her apartment, she couldn’t stop thinking about Emma. She imagined her friend sitting across from Ethan, hearing the words that would break her heart, and the thought made Lily feel sick.
Her phone buzzed again, and she glanced down to see another message from Emma.
Emma: It’s over.
Lily’s heart clenched, and for a moment, she couldn’t breathe. She stared at the message, unsure of what to say, unsure of how to comfort her friend when she was partially responsible for her pain.
But before she could respond, another message came through.
Emma: He said he has feelings for someone else.
