Days had passed since Lily's realization, and the weight of her feelings pressed down on her more heavily with each moment. It had all seemed so simple before,Emma had found someone who made her happy, and Lily was supposed to be the supportive friend but now that she couldn't ignore the truth about her own feelings for Ethan, everything had become infinitely more complicated.
She wasn’t sure when it had happened, maybe that night at the auction when they first locked eyes, or maybe it was simply the idea of him. Either way, the attraction had deepened into something that frightened her. Yet, how could she tell Emma? How could she ever admit that she had feelings for the man Emma was falling in love with? That would shatter her friend’s heart, and Lily wasn’t willing to do that.
She had to bury her feelings, lock them away and pretend they didn’t exist.
That evening, Lily found herself sitting at one of her favorite cafes, a quiet place on the outskirts of the city where she often came to think. The warm scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the soft hum of conversation and the clink of spoons against ceramic mugs. Usually, this place brought her comfort, but today it only reminded her of how tangled her life had become.
She stared down at the cappuccino in front of her, tracing her finger absently along the rim of the cup. Her mind was full of questions, but there were no easy answers.
“Lily?”
She startled, looking up to find Ethan standing in front of her. His tall, commanding presence seemed to fill the small space, and her heart skipped a beat as their eyes met. He looked effortlessly handsome in a casual button-down shirt and jeans, his tousled dark hair catching the light.
“Ethan,” she said, her voice coming out softer than she intended. She cleared her throat, forcing a smile. “What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same,” he replied with a smile of his own, slipping into the chair across from her without being invited. “I come here sometimes when I need to clear my head. Looks like we both had the same idea.”
Lily’s pulse quickened, though she tried to keep her expression neutral. “Yeah, it’s a nice place to think.”
Ethan nodded, glancing around the cafe before turning his attention back to her. “You come here often?”
Lily shrugged. “Every now and then. It’s quiet. Helps me clear my mind.”
Ethan smiled, and for a moment, they sat in comfortable silence. But Lily’s heart was anything but calm. She hadn’t expected to see him, and now that he was here, sitting across from her, she could feel the tension building between them. She knew she should leave, walk away before things got more complicated, but she couldn’t bring herself to move.
“How’s everything going with Emma?” she asked finally, hoping to steer the conversation in a safer direction.
Ethan’s smile faded slightly, and he glanced down at his hands for a moment before answering. “It’s… going well. She’s great. Really great.”
There was something in his tone that made Lily pause, and she studied him closely. He didn’t seem as enthusiastic as he usually did when Emma’s name came up, and that only added to the confusion swirling in her mind.
“I’m glad to hear that,” Lily said, though the words felt hollow in her mouth.
Ethan looked up at her, his blue eyes meeting hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. “Are you?”The question hung in the air between them, and for a moment, neither of them spoke. Lily felt her heart pounding in her chest, the weight of his gaze pressing down on her. She opened her mouth to respond, but the words wouldn’t come.
Ethan leaned forward slightly, his voice low. “I don’t know what it is, Lily, but ever since that night at the auction, I can’t stop thinking about you.”
Her breath hitched, and she stared at him, wide-eyed. Her mind screamed at her to say something, to deny the feelings that had been growing between them, but all she could do was sit there, frozen in place.
“I’m with Emma, and she’s amazing,” Ethan continued, his voice steady but conflicted. “But there’s something about you that I can’t ignore. I don’t know what to do about it.”
Lily’s heart felt like it was caught in a vise. This was exactly what she had feared, the worst possible scenario. She had wanted to pretend her feelings didn’t exist, to push them aside for the sake of her friendship with Emma, but now that Ethan had spoken the words out loud, there was no going back.
“I… I don’t know what to say,” she finally whispered, her voice barely audible.
Ethan reached across the table, his hand brushing against hers. The contact sent a jolt of electricity through her, and she quickly pulled her hand back, as if his touch had burned her.
“I’m sorry,” he said, pulling his hand away as well. “I didn’t mean to put you in an awkward position.”
Lily shook her head, trying to gather her thoughts. “No, it’s not your fault. It’s just… complicated.”
Ethan nodded, his expression thoughtful. “It is. But I don’t want to hurt Emma. She doesn’t deserve that.”
“No, she doesn’t,” Lily agreed, her voice tight with emotion. “She’s my best friend, and she’s falling for you. I can’t… I can’t come between that.”
Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I know. I feel the same way. But the more time I spend with her, the more I realize that something’s missing. And I can’t help but wonder if what’s missing is… you.”
Lily’s heart clenched painfully, and for a moment, she was tempted to throw caution to the wind and tell him everything, how she had been thinking about him too, how she had tried to push her feelings aside but couldn’t. But then she thought of Emma, of the joy in her friend’s eyes every time she talked about Ethan, and the thought of breaking her heart was too much to bear.
“I can’t do this,” Lily said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “I can’t be the reason Emma gets hurt.”
Ethan’s expression was filled with regret, and he nodded slowly. “I understand.”
For a long moment, they sat in silence, the weight of unspoken feelings hanging heavy between them. Finally, Ethan stood, his movements slow and deliberate.
“I should go,” he said, his voice rough with emotion. “I’m sorry, Lily. I didn’t mean to make things harder for you.”
Lily nodded, though she couldn’t bring herself to look at him. “It’s okay.”
Ethan hesitated for a moment, as if he wanted to say something more, but then he turned and walked away, leaving Lily alone at the table, her heart aching with the weight of everything she couldn’t say.
Later that night, Lily lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling as the events of the day replayed in her mind. She had tried to do the right thing, tried to push Ethan away for Emma’s sake, but the truth was, her feelings hadn’t disappeared. They were still there, simmering just below the surface, waiting for a moment to break free.
She knew she couldn’t keep going like this. Sooner or later, something would have to give, but what would she do when that time came? Could she really stand by and watch as Emma fell deeper in love with Ethan, knowing that a part of him was still drawn to her?
The thought made her stomach twist with guilt, but she didn’t have the answer. All she knew was that things were about to get even more complicated and no matter what happened next, someone was bound to get hurt.
The next morning, Lily woke up to a flurry of texts from Emma, who was practically glowing with excitement. She and Ethan had plans for a weekend getaway—just the two of them. Emma’s words were full of hope and joy, and Lily could almost hear the happiness in her friend’s voice as she described how perfect things were between her and Ethan.
Lily read the messages with a heavy heart, knowing that her silence about what had happened with Ethan was a betrayal of the bond she shared with Emma but how could she tell her the truth now? How could she ruin Emma’s happiness when she was so clearly in love?
As she sat there, staring at the screen, a thought crept into Lily’s mind. Maybe she could make this right. Maybe if she distanced herself, gave Emma and Ethan space, things would naturally work themselves out. After all, she hadn’t crossed any lines yet. There was still time to step back, to let Emma have her shot at happiness.
Lily took a deep breath and typed out a reply, forcing herself to sound enthusiastic even as her heart ached.
Lily: That sounds amazing, Em! I’m so happy for you. You two are going to have the best time.
She hit send, then tossed her phone onto the bed, feeling a strange mix of relief and sorrow. She had made her decision. She would step aside, let Emma and Ethan have their moment, and hope that eventually the feelings she had for him would fade.
But deep down, Lily knew that nothing about this would be easy. The lines between love and friendship were blurring, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come.
