Thomas stared at the message as if his eyes were glued to it. He had told Wendy he wouldn't receive any calls and would keep his phone off for the weekend. But he knew whenever Diane called or sent a message, something new had come up.
He was eager to find out what this new development was and so he tip-toed out of the bathroom and closed the bedroom door and went to meet Diane. He opened the front door and let her in.
"Shhhh don't make any noise," he quickly told her. Diane looked at him.
"Wait what's all this about?" she asked surprised he was behaving quite strangely
" Let's not disturb the neighbors so keep your voice down, okay?"
"look I don't have much time," she said handing him a file.
"What's this?" he asked seeing she was opening the door to leave.
"Something you should have seen earlier. Your girl is a mess. She's a wanted woman," Thomas rushed through the file rapidly and looked at Diane. he couldn't say a word.
"Now I'm not sure why I should keep my voice down. It's something I'm not used to doing whenever I come here,"
"sometimes there are exceptions." Thomas managed to say
"Yeah, that's when there's a woman somewhere in the house." Thomas stared at her.
"Who is she?" Diane asked interrogatingly
"look I think it's best you go and have an enjoyable weekend, "
"I just pray it's not the devil herself you're sleeping with."
"Diane since when did it concern you who I sleep with? He questioned
"You're becoming too soft on this investigation," She said staring sharply at him. he blinked.
"I guess I'll have to do something about it." she nodded
"Diane, what is it you want from me?" Standing by the door he peered into her eyes trying to find a good reason why she would want to as she said 'do something about it'.
"Nothing that you're not already giving someone else." Thomas stared silently at her. It appeared she seemed to know he was with Wendy or had guessed it.
"Okay enough of prying into my private life. Get one yourself." Thomas opened the front door. Diane walked out and turned to look at him. A sly smile crossed her lips.
"We are not done talking yet." she winked at him.
"And what else is there to talk about?" he asked her. Diane didn't answer but walked away. He closed the door and sighed.
With Diane gone he sat down in the sitting room and went through the file she had given him.
He wasn't sure why such a good looking lady would be on a wanted list. He looked at her criminal record. It wasn't the best he had seen in his years as a detective. It seemed she had committed almost every crime on earth.
The list was long.
He kept reading it over and over again trying to figure out if something was left out. Then he found it out. The murder of Alonso Capri wasn't on the list. How could it not be on the list when Wendy's name was mentioned. It terribly baffled him.
He picked up his phone and sent Diane a text message.
'Capri isn't on the list, why?' He waited for a reply but it didn't come. He got up and took the file and opened a safe in the wall that was covered by a painting and put it in there. He closed the safe and went to the bedroom with his mind on the list.
He wasn't satisfied with what Diane had given him. He felt something wasn't right, but had no idea what it was. But it was a weekend and there wasn't much he could do. He got to the bedroom and found Wendy sleeping peacefully. He lay down next to her with his thoughts still on the list. Soon he fell asleep.
