I woke up on Luke’s chest, my headache was gone. I slept better than I have ever before last night and I didn’t want to move. I needed to wake Luke up so we could get ready to go get my things. I worried if we didn’t get my medicine in time, another headache would begin.
Luke stirred under me and as he opened his eyes he pulled me closer. It felt strange being so close to someone I had just met, but it also felt right. “Thank you for holding me last night. I’m sorry if that was a strange request”, I said. He smiled back “I will hold you anytime, anywhere you’ll let me.”
I rolled out of the bed to use the restroom. This one was even bigger than the guest room’s bathroom. I pictured us in the bathtub together and I couldn’t help but think about Luke's perfect body. I realized I was taking a little too much time in here and hurried to wash my hands and leave. As I came out, there was an outfit on the bed for me. “My mother brought these clothes up for you. She thinks they may fit” Luke said. I was just going to hop in the shower so that will give you time to change” and with that, he grabbed his clothes from the closet and walked into the bathroom.
I walked over to the clothes on the bed and put them on. Not sure how she did it but they were a perfect fit. I grabbed my shoes from the guest room and put them on. When I returned to the bedroom, Luke was coming out of the bathroom. He looked like a model with a dark blue suit on that hugged his muscles in all the right places.
We walked down the four flights of stairs and out the doors. There was a black SUV with dark tint waiting for us. Kyle came out of the doors behind us and jumped in the back seat. Luke opened my door and waited until I got in. He got in the driver’s seat and I could see his eyes glaze over. I looked back at Kyle and his eyes were also glazed over. “Can I request something? From here on out, if you two are doing that weird mind-linking thing and it’s about me, just say it out loud.” They both laughed and agreed.
We headed out of the forest and into town. My nerves were everywhere as we turned onto the Reynold’s street. Kyle must have texted Meghan because she was waiting outside for us. As I got out, Meghan ran up to me and grabbed me in a hug. “I was so worried about you last night. You need to get a phone, damn it” Meghan scolded. “I know, I’m sorry, there was a lot going on last night and I’ve never needed a phone before. I promise I won’t do that to you again”, I assured her. “Now can you help me get my things?” I asked. Meghan walked ahead and I turned to Luke “I’ll be in a minute”, I said, and turned to go inside. I didn’t give him time to answer because it was best if he just waited.
My whole life I was surrounded by fighting and yelling, I hated it and didn’t want Luke to say anything to the Reynolds. I grabbed a garbage bag and started putting the few items I had inside of it. I looked at my medicine on the nightstand and opened the bottle. My eyes drifted to the window where I could see Luke pacing out front of the house. I closed the bottle in my hand and threw it in with my other things. Meghan started to cry and I realized I was leaving behind the only friend I ever had. I hugged her tightly, the silence between us saying everything. My heart was breaking knowing I was leaving her behind in this house. She never got along with the Reynolds and although they ignored me, Mr. Reynolds would take out his frustrations on Meghan when he would drink. I hated leaving her here by herself.
I heard the front door slam, followed by Mr. Reynolds shouting “You piece of sh*t, she is mine for two more years. Get out of here and in two years you can have your w***e!” I looked out the window and saw him standing in front of Luke pointing his finger at Luke’s chest. We ran outside and when we got there, Mr. Reynolds had his fist in the air heading for Luke’s face. Luke grabbed his fist before it could make contact and then he started laughing. His smile turned serious just as quickly as it had started and he turned to look at me. "You and Meghan wait in the truck," he said. He still had Mr. Reynolds by the collar and as we got in the truck, he pushed him up against the house. I could still hear him as we were piling in. Luke’s voice was low. “You will never speak about Kailee like that again! She is not your property! She will be leaving here and so will Meghan and if you so much as speak their names, you will wish you and your wife were never born!”

Before I even opened my eyes, I smiled. I wondered if she slept better being in my arms. She moved and I couldn’t help but hold her closer. I wished every morning would be just as perfect. “I bet I can think of a few ways to make it even perfect-er” laughed Zane.
After our good mornings, I took a shower and got ready for the day. I had a meeting later today that I had to be at. I wasn’t sure how long it would take to collect her belongings, but I hoped it wouldn’t be long enough to interfere with work. As we were getting in the car, I linked Kyle “Let’s hope her chatty friend doesn’t keep us too long”. He linked back “Hey, don’t forget without Meghan, you wouldn’t have spent the night with your mate!”
We got to the Reynolds house and as expected, Meghan met us outside. This time she wasn’t bouncing around like yesterday. They went inside and Kailee asked me to wait. I didn’t want her in that house without me, but I didn’t want to push her either. These people were crooks, taking advantage of kids out of foster care. Kids who had nowhere else to go. After working and paying the Reynolds mortgage for them, they’d make the girls clean all of the house and only fed them scraps. Luckily, Kailee and Meghan would eat food that was getting thrown away at the diner.
I could feel sadness, and I wondered if our bond was getting stronger. I was pretty sure the sadness I felt was what Kailee was feeling right now. I started to think of how pathetic the Reynolds were when the front door flew open. A guy in his early 40s came out pointing his finger at me and yelling. It was comical at first so I laughed at him, but then he called Kailee a w***e and Zane took control. He quickly put him in his place and then collected the girl's things. Zane was smart enough to know he couldn't just kill a human in town, but if he threatened our mate again, I don't think he would hold back a second time.
I wasn’t sure how this was going to work, introducing a human to our world, but I knew Zane had done the right thing. Kailee needed her friend with her. Kyle linked me, “You did the right thing Alpha.” I linked him back, “I know. Remind me that again when I regret this.”

As we left the Reynolds, it was silent, even Meghan said a simple “thank you” to Luke as she walked by him to get in the truck. We rode for a bit and when we got to the forest, Luke pulled over. “Meghan, there’s a lot that we need to tell you and not that much time to explain. Kailee can fill you in more when Kyle and I are at our meeting today. We’re taking you to our house where you’ll stay till we can sort things out. We’re not exactly what you think we are and if you’re not okay with that, we’ll find you other accommodations. The only thing I ask of you is that you don’t tell others about us or our way of life”, Luke very matter-of-factly said. Meghan agreed, “I promise whatever it is, your secret is safe with me. Thank you for taking me out of there. You didn’t have to, but I promise to repay you somehow.” “Let’s just say we’re even,” Luke said while grabbing my hand.
Back at the house, we showed Meghan the guest room and she threw herself on the bed with her arms spread like she was going to make a snow angel. I couldn’t help but smile at her. I told her I’d be back once I unpacked my garbage bag and Luke and I walked to our bedroom. The thought gave me butterflies in my stomach.
I started to unpack my clothes but there wasn’t much. Luke reached his hand out to me with a credit card between his fingers. “Here’s the card I told you about. I think you and Meghan should go shopping tomorrow while I take care of some things here.” I looked at him with a blank expression. Part of me wanted to jump in his arms and thank him for being my prince, but the other part didn’t want me to get too close in case it all came to an end. This man had been nothing but nice and patient with me and he deserved the truth. “My medicine,” I said quietly as I removed the bottle from the garbage bag, “I hear voices. Well, I've only really heard one voice and the doctors gave me this prescription. It makes the voice go away, but sometimes I get headaches like the voice is fighting to come back.” Luke looked at me and I couldn’t read what he was thinking. “Last night I realized when I was close to you the headache would go away and today it’s been gone all day except for a moment when Zane took over at the Reynolds.”

We left the Reynolds and Meghan promised to keep our pack a secret. I still wasn’t sure how this was going to work out but feeling what Kailee was feeling, I couldn’t just leave Meghan there. Back at the packhouse, I was getting ready to leave for my meeting. I figured the girls could catch up on things and knew that would keep them busy for a while.
I linked Julia, who was in charge of the kitchen and asked her to bring the girls' lunch to the guest room. She promised she’d make a meal fit for an Alpha with desserts to follow. I had known Julia my whole life and she always took great care of me and I knew she’d take great care of my mate.
I saw the number of clothes and their condition as Kailee unpacked. I still couldn’t get over how mistreated she was her entire life and I wanted to give her everything she could ever dream of. I reached my hand out to give her the credit card I had promised but she just stared at me. I knew she wanted to tell me something but she was considering the consequences. She started slowly and if I didn’t have wolf hearing I may not have even heard what she was saying. The puzzle was starting to make sense.
