Chapter 9

Due to the long trip, Kade and I had to spend one night in a motel located in a small town. It was not a big building as it only had three rooms each on the first and second floor. And as cliche at it may sound, but I hated how all the rooms only had one bed. But we had no other choice. This was much more ideal rather than sleep in the car. I thought we would just be having a quick rest after eating dinner, but Kade had other plans. He decided that this was the perfect time to discuss the art project he wanted me to work on. My eyes locked onto the screen of his laptop. He literally wanted me to do a mural on the newly renovated hall that was specifically for grand parties that the Storm family loved to do. It was no exaggeration, but it was as high as a two-storey building. Since I was only starting in doing 3D plaster painting, doing it at such a wide canvas would take even a month, especially when I consider the days it would take to dry first before painting. Not to mention, his requested art was a bit complex, too. "How long can you complete it?" Kade asked after getting out of the shower. "At least a month and a half if there are no delays," I replied without sparing him a glance. I grabbed my phone and started calculating the initial expenses. "Here. Save my contact number so you can call me when you need anything for the project." He handed his phone with his number. I merely went along with him and saved it. "You don't have to worry about your accommodation. You're going—" Before he could even finish what he had to say, we both looked at each other as a really inappropriate noise filled the room. It was definitely coming from the next room, most especially that even the creaking of the bed could be heard clearly. My cheeks burned even more when I heard the woman moaning to her heart's content. Her voice was so clear that it felt like we were watching them do it. Argh! How could the owner build this building soundproof? The awkwardness of the situation made Kade stand from his seat and reach for his cigarette. "I'll go out for a quick smoke. You stay here," he said. "Put on the headphones. It's in my luggage." He did not even wait for me to speak and just left me all alone. I closed the laptop and opened his luggage. Just as expected of him, everything was in clean order so it was not that hard to find the headphones. I immediately used it before laying down on the bed. Thanks to that, it became peaceful again. Looking at the time, it was already past midnight. A sigh left my mouth. The people in the next room really had to choose this night to do the deed. Even with the headphones on, sleep refused to visit me at all. Half an hour had already passed yet here I was, still wide awake. Kade hadn't even returned yet. Hence, I decided to leave the room for a while and go out to the balcony for some fresh air. The moment I stepped out, my gaze immediately darted at the far end of the balcony. It was Kade. Thanks to the full moon, it looked like it was almost dawn. "Why are you still awake?" I looked back at Kade, who was now facing me. "I can't sleep," I merely replied. Seeing that he was about to light another stick of cigarette, I rushed to him and snatched his lighter. "Why are you smoking again? Didn't you already quit?" I closed the lighter, but Kade grabbed my wrist. "Light it for me," he said with his usual demanding tone. "No." "No?" His eyebrow raised. "No," I said, my voice firmer this time around. A gasp left my mouth when he suddenly wrapped his other hand around my waist and pulled me close to him. Forget the cold wind. Kade's warmth wrapped around me as his ocean green eyes locked into mine. He didn't say a word. He merely leaned close until his forehead was against mine without breaking eye contact. "You..." That one word could barely be heard as he tilted his head as if attempting to kiss me. My heart thumped, however, a voice at the back of my mind whispered to not let him do as he pleased. Just when his lips was about to touch mine, I looked away. His grip around my waist tightened. "You reek of cigarette," I said. Before we started dating years ago, I already made it clear to him that the smell of cigarette was one of the things I didn't like. I thought he stopped, but it seemed like he had been still smoking while we were together. But he only did such when he was alone. I pushed him away, freeing myself from his grip and heading back to our room. He must have only done that because of what we heard a while ago. It must only be his body's reaction, not because he wanted me back. Even before I drifted off to sleep, Kade did not return to our room. It was only when I woke up at seven in the morning when I met his gaze the moment he stepped out of the bathroom. I immediately looked away since he only had a towel around his waist. "Get ready. I have an emergency at the company," he said. Not wanting to burden him, I rushed to the bathroom to prepare. However, the moment I was done and stepped back into the room, Kade was already gone. My gaze then shifted on the bed where a black dress was laid out. It had an off-shoulder sweet heart neckline and its striking translucent and layered sleeves resembled that of a fairy's wings. I didn't even know where he got it from. Next to it, there was a note. "Wear it." Hmph. As if he could order me around just because I had been listening to him before we left Georgia. I scanned the room, only to notice that it wasn't only Kade's luggage was not in sight, but also mine. My feet immediately ran to the closet where I put my luggage and found none. My immediate action was to call Kade. At the first ring, he immediately answered. "Where's my luggage?" I asked with gritted teeth. "It's already here in the car. It's a bit heavy so I carried it for you. You better hurry up, though," he replied so casually. "My clothes are in there. Bring it back here." I heard a small and quick laugh from him, making me frown. "Have your eyes become selective on what it can and cannot see? There's a dress on the bed. Wear it." "No." "Then, come out wearing nothing. That's fine with me, too." Without another word from me, I ended the call with a curse. There had to be something going on in Valtemort that he wanted me to wear this. I stared at the dress. It was pretty, to be the honest. However, my gut feeling told me that wearing it and going to Valtemort was not really a good idea. But rather than leaving this place naked, wearing it was the better option. Hence, I left the motel room with the black dress on. I found Kade at the parking lot. He was smoking again, making me glare at him. The moment he saw me, he disposed it and got into the driver's seat. Kade also wore a formal suit so I decided to confront him. "What exactly is going on?" I asked. "You will know once we are in Valtemort."
